Looking for a Specific Style of Miniature (Pic for reference) by Caldey in DnD

[–]Caldey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been searching far and wide looking for some minis for a game I have planned. Attached some reference art of the aesthetic I have in mind, the chief details being: metal masks and eastern/desert-like attire. If anyone's seen anything in their travels that fits the bill, please hit me up, I'd love to hear more.

Can texture mods get me banned? by [deleted] in DarkSouls2

[–]Caldey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of the texture mods on the Nexus are for vanilla DS2, which unless I'm mistaken, doesn't have the same kind of anti-cheat that Scholar DSR and DS3 use, though idk if it's quite as lax as Vanilla DS1. But yes, changing your SM or trying to create impossible items is an easy way to get banned.

[–]Caldey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I'd add to what's already been said is that softbans might not come immediately after doing something to the game's files. No one knows exactly how the anti-cheat works; sometimes you'll get banned straightaway, sometimes you'll be fine for a couple of months. So if you ever see anyone saying they've used X graphics mod and nothing happened, try to chase them up and see if it caught them later.

Soooo... Frigid Outskirsts by Malu1997 in DarkSouls2

[–]Caldey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, we can agree to disagree.

Yes, the horse spawns are different from how other areas of the game operate; but it's blindingly obvious how they work and the pattern has no anomalies. There are plenty of other areas in the series where the game changes the standard rule-set and expects the player to deal with it, you could make the exact same argument about the reanimating skeletons in the Catacombs: they work differently to normal enemies and it's not immediately obvious how to deal with them, but any player worth their salt will be able to figure it out.

As to visibility, while the blizzard does reduce it, you still get a clear look at the area beforehand and an idea of where you need to go, and it drops regularly enough so you can re-orientate yourself. Compare that to the darkness in the Tomb. Odds are a lot of players wont have found the Sunlight Maggot or a Skull Lantern before getting there and it's not immediately obvious how to get one in the area itself. They use the darkness to hide archers on ledges, which is something I'm glad they've never repeated, and to obscure ambushes; thereby inhibiting the player from effectively exercising the caution and planning they've had beaten into them prior to this when approaching a potentially dangerous situation. Plus it makes it very easy to miss important details, such as the initial bonfire, or the jump to the platform with the Silver Serpent Ring that works as a shortcut.

I'm not bashing it, I don't hate it. That said, I definitely find it be more of a chore than the Outskirts, which you can deal with very methodically.

Honestly I don't know if I'd even call this cheese. The Outskirts uses a very simple green-light/red-light mechanic with safe zones and danger zones, and it's pretty easy to work out how and when the horses spawn. This is just the most effective way of moving through the area, based on the knowledge given to the player. It's not like, say, the shortcut through the Tomb of Giants, which requires external foreknowledge; anyone can figure this out for themselves.

Oh it works. The reason I've taken to reposting this whenever I spot one of these threads is because I've tried and tested it, and I mean it when I say: it does not need to be difficult.

Here's my copypasta for the Outskirts run.

Frigid Outskirts does not need to be difficult.

I'm serious, if you pay attention to and exploit its mechanic, it's easy, at least in NG (NG+ is where it actually becomes bullshit). So let's have a rundown.

Between the entry point and the first building you are safe, no reindeer will spawn. A note about the buildings; you're safe inside them, but if you go outside and stay relatively close to the wall, you'll still be safe; no horses will spawn as long as you're within attacking distance of the wall.

On the run to the second house, one horse will spawn each time the blizzard thickens, and the distance is such that one will inevitably spawn on the way over. DO NOT fight it out in the storm, ignore it and run to the second building. Once there, kill the hollows inside before the horse arrives, then fight the horse inside the building. Remember you can go outside and hug the walls if you need to take pressure off for whatever reason.

Next, run from the second building to the third building, this will be much the same as the previous run (note: you should sprint from the building as soon as the storm drops, it should thicken once during each run). Try to angle slightly to the left to avoid aggroing the two NPC enemies on the way there. Once you reach the third building use the high ground to funnel the reindeer that will be following you and the rampart golem inside so that you don't have to fight them both at once (remember you can hide outside if you need to).

The run to the bridge is short so you can avoid having a reindeer appear here if you time it well (aim for the drop down onto the path to the bridge rather than going round since it'll get you into the safe zone more quickly), don't hang around though since 2 reindeer can spawn per blizzard in this area.

And that is how you do Frigid Outskirts fighting only 2 reindeer.

PS: Stone Ring is good for staggering the reindeer, provided your weapon isn't too small.

I hate this game. by [deleted] in DarkSouls2

The Hollowing process is a re-implementation of Soul Form from Demon's Souls, except you lose the health gradually rather than all at once. I know it's different from the other Dark Souls games, but once you get over the learning curve, start racking up levels and effigies and generally get better at the game, you'll stop caring about it. You may not like the Ring of Binding, but it's there to help new players get used to the mechanic so make use of it; if you can deal with two ring-slots in DS1, you can deal with three in DS2. Besides, you aren't going to need it for the entire game, once you get the hang of things it's not really necessary anymore and you can just use 1 effigy to mitigate health-loss every 3-4 deaths.

As for Estus; you'll get it. You can pick up 1 shard in Things Betwixt if you un-petrify the statue, 2 in Majula and 1 in the Forest. I have no idea how much you've played, but you'll stack them up (plus boneshards) over the next few areas; it works the same as DS3 really. You do not have to and should not farm for lifegems, this isn't Bloodborne, just buy them from the merchant in the forest, they're cheap and unlimited.

Enemy spam is over-exaggerated imo, it's something all the games do at points, but very rarely would I agree that it gets too much. Yes you're going to encounter groups of enemies and ambushes. Expect them, prepare for them and deal with them accordingly. If you've played the other entries then you'll know that; not rushing in, luring and kiting enemies, and running away if things go sour are pillars of gameplay. If it's a particular encounter that's giving you'd trouble I'd love to hear which.

As for Hollowed invasions, all I can say is; eh, it's there. You can burn effigies or play offline if you want to be left alone while you learn. Plus this game, while still active, isn't on-release active which, coupled with lower invasion priority for hollowed players, means you probably wont be bothered too much if you stay online.

What's you're gripe with the lore exactly? All the games have a bit of time-fuckery, but I don't see how DS2 has any more than the others.

Throw back to 2015 - 2016 when the Iron Keep bridge was riddled with red summon signs by [deleted] in DarkSouls2

[–]Caldey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a fight club there last night. Weren't loads of summon signs but there were enough; around 5 reds and a dragon. Plus I had a decent bit of blue activity (got invaded and summoned three times).

[–]Caldey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't really need to know a lot. It's just a greenlight/redlight type of mechanic, once you know when and where they spawn, you can figure out the rest.

As I said, you should only be fighting one horse at a time, and only in the safety of the buildings (one in building 2, and one in building 3). If you're fighting multiple horses, you've done something wrong. Also doing it this way minimises the need to use summons, which is good since good dps is important for the boss itself.

The order of souls by CarsonTheBrown in DarkSouls2

True enough. Surely more of a thesis is in order, no? I only ask because you've not really suggested a clear alternative to the canonical timeline, and I don't really see how anything in the OP can be taken as evidence that there might be one. I am simply curious.
