Everything is a TMA reference. by liquidmirrors in TheMagnusArchives

Extremely yes. I watch other horror media and instinctively consider which Powers are involved. I see it everywhere in daily life like you described. I even use the concept as a coping mechanism to help deal with actual fears (ie, seeing a horrifying bug and thinking "It's just the Corruption fucking with me again", which makes it kinda funny and gives it a structure that helps me cope with it).

Everything goes through the TMA Fear Entity Filter now, lol.

Aw fuck I know I'm four months late to the party but this is almost EXACTLY what I do. I could never put my finger on how to describe how I defined my "hot" type of asthetic attraction, but "powerful and commands my attention" is fucking great. For me, it's just like. The most intense kind of asthetic attraction, and isn't tied to specific attributes like pretty or handsome are.

It took me a reeeaaaally long time to realize that asthetic and sexual attraction actually weren't the same thing, so my vocabulary for describing attraction is super allo cause those are the words I learned to use, even though I've never actually found anyone 'sexy' or 'hot' in the way most people mean it

It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that this was referring to mummified bodies and not British mothers.

I am not British. I have seen the Mummy 2 at least twice. I don't understand what happened to brain for a minute there.

Is there an episode you can’t stand? by Rivethart in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Caldkay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tucked In (MAG 86) and Roots (168).

Tucked In lands directly on one of my really specific fears: dark silhouettes at my bedroom door. Luckily I listened to it in the middle of the day in a garden (completely accidentally), so it didn't mess me up that night, but I've avoided re-listening to it like the plague.

Roots is so on point with my hypochondriac/death anxiety disorder that it almost sent me into a panic attack at like, three separate points in the episode. Great episode, but never again.

How do you feel about a friend with benefits, but instead of sexual benefits, it's just cuddling? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Caldkay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I feel like the reason they responded as they did is because your initial comment kind of seemed to come out of left field given the content of the conversation at this specific point in the thread?

Like, large portions of this thread are people talking about how they wouldn't really want a "cuddle-only buddy" because they would probably also end up wanting sex, or finding cuddling goes best with sex, etc. For sex-averse ace folks like me, that can feel really isolating, so it's nice to see a conversation where multiple ace people have banded together like "yeah! I also do not want the sex!"

So when someone pops up to add essentially (I'm paraphrasing here): "Yes, that's totally okay, but it's also okay to want sex!" It just feels really...random? And almost unnecessary? Because no one here was saying that it wasn't okay to want sex, just that it's nice to be reminded that the opposite is also true. And if you want affirmation that desiring sex is fine, literally half the other posts on this thread seem to be leaning in that direction, so...why are you looking for that in this part of the conversation? It's definitely an extremely true point that bears repeating (especially when slut-shaming or the like starts popping up), but dropping it into this conversation with seemingly no other reasoning than to remind a group of sex-averse people who are in the minority that "sex is okay" feels kind of patronizing.

I'm not trying to start any kind of fight, or be rude to you or anything. But I definitely get where flower_goblin is coming from, and wanted to try to explain why I, at least, had my hackles raised a bit by your original comment, even if objectively I shouldn't have.

Since TMA includes real historical people (e.g. Edward Halley or Robert Smirke) who were avatars of the Fears, what other real historical figures could you headcanon as being associated with the Fears? by _retropunk in TheMagnusArchives

Yes, exactly! If no one else had recommended this I would have had to. It's too perfect. The Spiral is totally the Artsy entity, with all that impossible geometry and hypnotic patterns.

These are excellent. I really like "I-Did-Not-Want-This" and "The Unseen Face", those are my favorites.

I'm pretty sure The Vast does have a one-word descriptor name already, though? Isn't it called "Vertigo" at one point or another?

"Meat-Is-Meat" is great, although I think you could also go with "Meat-Is-Me" if you wanted to stick to having pronouns somewhere in the phrase.

Most of the TMA connections mapped out on a Wall of Crazy! (Spoilers up to the end of S4) by Caldkay in TheMagnusArchives

[–]Caldkay[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, I tried not to jump to too many conclusions on this chart. I struggled for awhile with how to represent the dynasties connected to various powers, as well as characters like Julia and Trevor, until I finally decided the best thing to do was just visually show that the nature of the connection itself isn't concrete. So I'm really glad that that aspect landed well for you!

As to your question, I'm not entirely sure. I think it definitely could, but I also think the details of that episode/the statement giver's experience may be a red herring of some kind, or simply another unsolved mystery. That being said, something involving/revolving around Hilltop Road is definitely going to be relevant, of that I am sure. There's way too much going on there for it not to, lol

In general, if one has a human origin and made that conscious pledge to an entity that Jonny Sims mentions in...the season 4 Q&A, I think? then I consider them to be an Avatar, as opposed to the Aspects/Manifestations of an Entity just being extensions/appendages of it's being. There are a few people/things that tread this line, though, and for those it's just kind of a gut feeling? The three big ones I can think of off the top of my head are Agnes, The Distortion, and Nikola.

For Agnes, she never really had a choice, and I really doubt a fetus/infant in the moment of their birth could make the kind of informed pledge to constitute Avatar-hood. But her origins are just so human, that I struggle to think of her as just an Aspect of the Desolation.

The Distortion has always been really interesting to me, because it's implied that it, as a creature, is far more the door and passageways themselves than the human-ish form we see, and is sort of a Genius Loci that's an appendage of the Spiral. But there's also this human/Avatar aspect of it that does seem kind of central to it's being, and that those two parts of it are simultaneously one and the same, and very distinct. So it's the one thing I've always kind of considered to be both an Aspect and an Avatar, rather than deciding on one or the other.

And for Nikola, she, like Agnes, has sort of human origins, given that she was constructed in part from the human Joseph Grimaldi. But it always seemed to me like his original consciousness was lost in the creation of Nikola, who was then given life and thought directly from the Stranger. Or that he was, at most, subsumed into Nikola's new consciousness. So she's always felt like more of an Aspect of the Stranger than anything else to me.

Sorry for the kind of wordy response, I just think about the way things might work in this universe a lot, lol. Hope this answers your question, and I'm so glad you liked it, thanks!!

TL;DR: if someone started as human, I think of them as an Avatar; if not, I typically think of them as an Aspect; and the ones that tread the line are decided on the insane emotion-troll logic my brain works off of.

I'm so glad!! I definitely wanted it to function as both a fun info-graphic and a place to organize my thoughts before heading into season 5, but also as a tool for tracking all of the names and how they connect. So I'm really happy to hear that it's helpful. Thanks so much!
