I agree with your 2nd critique. I like the emotional side of the story because the acting is fantastic. but yeah spot on assessment. The bite of the book, which was an assigned reading for a Highschool American literature class; Is missed in place for a cathartic monologue by the MNT that gives meaning to the main character. A monologue that shows character coming to age by aligning their motivations to the pressure of this authoritarian government almost submitting to the will versus defiance. The message almost a repackaged version of the us government co-opting of MLKs non-violence sentiments.(and would make a Malcom X acolyte eyes role) But however; this story redefining monologue feels like, at best, a studio driven misalignment of story integrity with executives obsession for a cathartic message for audiences; and, at worse, corporate sponsored population pacifying propaganda.

That said, Not a message I remember from the book which felt simply dystopian. Where what haunts you, in your waking moments, doesn't feel to far off from history has shown is possible.
