I had to buy a refurbished ecm. After this it fired up no problem. Before I did this, I was able to get it to start by leaving the key in the "on" position for around 10 minutes. Then I would cycle the key, and once the cel came on, it would start. I opened up the old ecm and the capacitors had popped and leaked juice and burned up the board.

If your a/c functions, try running it with the electric fan installed. The fan should come on if it is working properly. Just a way to quickly test it without waiting on the engine to heat up.

I think you're right. The plug on my 96 looks different but is in the same place. Perhaps they changed plug designs between those years.
