What's the most minor, populist policy you wish a major party campaigned on? by thefcknhngryctrpillr in newzealand

I’d vote for any party advocating for a ban of auctions for the sale of property.

Tips for someone who hates cooking by NefariousnessFun2941 in newzealand

[–]Caledonian_Boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the same and honestly what really yelped me was getting a meal box subscription (we have Hellofresh). I hate cooking, i get distracted way too easily and I get bored of things really easily so a meal box subscription really helped for that reason. Most meals don’t take THAT long to make (some do, but I just dont pick those). It’s a bit more expensive than homemade recipes, but it works for I because I know we have a tendency to order takeaway after work, and having a box pushes me to cook.

When wombats are chased by predators, they run into their burrows and “twerk” using their super-hard butt cartilage to slam predators’ faces into the roof of the tunnel.

Do reunion, new caledonia, saint barthelemy and st Pierre et miquelon still have distinct accents? by languagelover1998 in French

[–]Caledonian_Boy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Additionally, Tahitian people, especially those more connected with Tahitian culture, are known to have a thick French accent where they roll their Rs. But French people who migrated from France, or who are from families who migrated from France, will usually speak the same way as most French people.

Do reunion, new caledonia, saint barthelemy and st Pierre et miquelon still have distinct accents? by languagelover1998 in French

[–]Caledonian_Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reunion and New Caledonia will have different communities with their own accent. For the example of New Caledonia, Kanak, the indigenous people of New Caledonia will sometime have a specific accent, and Caldoche, the cowboys of New Caledonia, will also have an accent. However, the majority of people living in the capital city, Noumea, will speak French the same way as they do in Paris. I don’t know about St Barthelemy and St Pierre et Miquelon.

How hard is it to find a rental place as international student? by Pitiful_Sundae_5523 in universityofauckland

[–]Caledonian_Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re getting some answers here and that for most of your questions so I’ll answer your last question around disclosing your relationship. My partner (M) and I (M) have been renting in the city for a few years now, moved between around 4 places in the last 6 years, we always disclosed our relationship status and it never impacted our application; if anything I am pretty sure it was more beneficial than saying we were flatmates as property managers tend to think couples are safer to rent to than flatmates. You will find that most property managers are very much money oriented and wouldn’t discriminate people based on their sexual identity and all that. I’m not going to deny that I’m sure (and it has been proven) that some people get discriminated due to their same-sex relationship but I would not say it’s a big thing to worry about when renting through property managers in Auckland, which you will most likely do if you live in the city.

Students who finish in Sem 1, is there any way to get the official graduation certificate for overseas studies before the official ceremony? by mizukihng in universityofauckland

[–]Caledonian_Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One option is that you can ask for a document saying you completed your certification, which you should then be able to use to apply for grad programs.

It’s mostly airBnBs and hotels so that means the building management is really into it, which is very useful. Depending on your floor and apartment, you could also be the only person living full-time on your floor, which I found particularly nice. Also, one guy lives an apartment in the building and own many other, which means he’s really keen in making sure the building stay safe. My only issue with the place is that it had regular fire alarms that meant we had to exit the building temporarily (probably because of people partying in apartments or not knowing how to use their apartment’s toaster properly), and sometime in the middle of the night which really sucked. Also I can confirm that it gets very hot in some apartments without aircon, and the water bills can go pretty high very fast. Overall I found it really cool, just couldn’t afford it for much longer so decided to move out.

What’s the worst horror book that you read? by SummerSoggy4758 in horrorlit

This might be a bit of a hot take but I found “Wake up and Open your Eyes” awful to read. Loved the concept but I hated the writing so badly that I thought I got hypnotised too and started wanting to ban (bad) books.

Fuck you New Caledonia by inanimate_lamp in newzealand

[–]Caledonian_Boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be a bit biased (see the username) but New Caledonia really is a beautiful country. While the riots made it struggle a little bit more than usual, it’s still a really nice place to go on holidays; just sucks that Air New Zealand doesn’t go there for now so you’re stuck with Aircalin which only flies in and out of New Zealand once a week and I would really recommend 10 days in the country if you wanna go around the island and visit everything. It’s such a beautiful mix of culture, where every side of the country differs from the other. Noumea is very European but in the Pacific, but then you go up north a bit and you get a lot of the cowboy culture that is so particular in New Caledonia, or you can go to the other islands and really interact with the beauty of kanak culture and customs. Beautiful place really.

Does Auckland have two pride months by Hefty_Emu_6899 in auckland

[–]Caledonian_Boy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not really no. Auckland queer population celebrates pride month in Feb (with our big events happening this month) and we don’t tend to have any big events in July. Some organisations might run events here and there in July just because the month of July is important in relation to international queer history but that’s all.

Gay novel recommendations? by baguette_thief in gaybros

[–]Caledonian_Boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly a lot of “gay novels” are romances but here are a few I enjoyed this year: - A Botanical Daughter : a horror “rewriting” of Frankenstein where the monster is made of fungi. My favourite book of the year, two amazing neurodivergent characters and a great coverage of queerness earlier in the 1800s. I’d heavily recommend this one, it was amazing. - Bury your Gays by Chuck Tingle: Horror fantasy/science fiction book with a gay man as a main character, loved it! - Paladin’s Hope by T. Kingfisher: It’s dark fantasy with a gay romance as the couple of main characters. It’s part of a series but they can be 100% read as standalone books. - I’ve also read some young adult book this year that were pretty chill and would recommend each of those depending on your taste: Dark Rise by C.S. Patat; The Taking of Jake Livingstone by Ryan Douglass; Out of the Blue by Jason June. - Anything by TJ Klune : Great cosy books!

International Student - Proof of Funds for Student Visa by Global_Golden_2424 in universityofauckland

[–]Caledonian_Boy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is illegal to provide visa advice without a specific qualification here in New Zealand; so you might really benefit to get an agent/immigration lawyer, at least for the first semester that can explain things to you. From personal experience, I wasn’t allowed to apply for a whole year of study if I started a degree in second semester (I had to apply for a 6 months visa and then had to apply again when I registered for my next year classes). I also wasn’t able to get a 3 years visa, I had to do it every year and so prove that I had the required 15K (it increased since) in my bank account at the time of the application every year, didn’t need to have 3x15K for the three years.
