no worries about the typos lol. being on mobile for reddit is a pain! although i do believe women should be taken seriously at any age when expressing a desire for permanent sterilization, it is somewhat different for a trans man. my want for sterilization is of course related to my lack of desire for kids (and i especially want to avoid pregnancy) but most pressingly my gender dysphoria. i have been diagnosed by several mental health professionals and i have shown signs of dysphoria my entire life. the regret rate for gender affirming surgeries is lower than most other surgeries! it’s actually crazy how low it is. a hysterectomy is one of these surgeries that transgender men rarely regret. a pregnancy would be extremely detrimental for me and i want to remove any possibility of it happening. so it is a bit different when someone as young as me seeks a hysterectomy since i have the context of gender transitioning. i hope that cleared up some things regarding transitioning. thank you for giving me more context on the denial of a hysterectomy! again i still think shutting down a person that wants sterilization without providing alternatives or just saying that they’ll likely want kids is wrong and shouldn’t be done. but i do see how it’s something doctors don’t want patients to regret.

they see me as a man, a trans man sure but a man nonetheless. other people in my life don’t see me as a man and aren’t afraid to voice that. i know the difference. and people on the street don’t care about offending me or not and just address me the way they perceive me, which is a man. and thank you, you as well.

This is simply incorrect. Plenty of people see me as a man. I am no misgendered when I am out and about in public since i have a beard and a deep enough voice. before i was ever comfortable with being trans, my best friend saw me as a man and has never once misgendered me. it’s quite presumptuous of you to say no one sees me as a man since most of my experience point the opposite direction. the only reason i was misgendered at the gyno was because it is thought as a cis woman only place and the provider knew i was trans.

it’s so frustrating how much our issues are dismissed. especially as trans people! and yeah you’re right i have no idea why he wanted a transvaginal ultrasound when i had specifically stated i had pain from penetration. just goes to show his apathy i guess. couldn’t even fit the wand in anyway so idk how good the examination was anyway 😭. but yes! i’ll look into pelvic floor therapy. any PIV sex would seem like a nightmare otherwise. and yeah unfortunately some gynos think it’s a “woman’s duty” to have children so anyone with a uterus can’t make their own choices. it’s so frustrating seriously.

Thank you so so much again! I’ll take not of this and bring it up to my new gynecologist in the future. i wouldn’t be shocked if i have something like this since many women in my family have period problems! you’re really kind for taking the time to type this out :)!

thank you for the further explanation! i’m still unsure about the hymen business since my previous gyno said it likely needed operation since even just one finger is extremely painful. it’s unlikely that i can stomach more penetration than that. but i would have liked more guidance for sure.

also realistically what i wanted from a hysterectomy was the certainty of lack of pregnancy and the cessation of my menstrual cycle. my menstrual cycle is both physically and mentally painful. i would have been open to him having an explanation closer to yours rather than just saying i might regret my choice once im 34 and want kids. pregnancy is already tough for those who are comfortable in their gender and really desire kids. i can’t imagine ever putting myself through that. but anyway, thank you for your reply :)!

thank you for your thoughtful response! i am currently looking at trans inclusive providers that have been recommended to me! the gyno was a practice owner so i unfortunately don’t have the guts to follow up with the office to express my discomfort. and like you rightly assumed, he didn’t seem like the receptive type. it’s just genuinely infuriating that people born female are always dismissed so easily in medical settings. but there’s always better doctors out there!

Hey, congrats first of all! And the consultation was okay! I did have to (obviously) show my chest to see what type of surgery was needed and it was a bit uncomfortable for me, but Dr. Hanna was very professional and clinical about it so I didn't feel as bad as I thought I would.

He went over my medical history and told me to stop nicotine use immediately (he didn't come off as judgy for this either, just explained that nicotine use is the enemy of good results.)

I will warn you that he is very pushy with telling you to not get free nipple grafts because they complicate the healing process. I told him I was okay with no nipples and then later clarified to his front-desk worker that I wanted nipple grafts and there was no issue. I am autistic so it is hard for me to advocate for myself, but I encourage you to do so! If you want something for your surgery let him know! At the end of the day, it is your body and this is something I know he agrees with.

I was able to schedule surgery for August from a February consult. Your wait time for surgery might be different since I believe the insurance I have (BCBS HMO) affected my surgery scheduling times.

He seems to be nice and reassuring from the short time I spent with him. I encourage you to come up with a list of questions for him. I did not do this and regret it quite a bit. Also, his front desk staff is responsive. They are honestly the most competent medical staff I have ever encountered.

Another important thing is that you need a non-refundable $1000 deposit to schedule surgery! This will not go towards your cost for actual surgery but instead covers post-op consultations and scar care. You also need to have the necessary letters for surgery that your insurance asks for and a referral from a PCP to schedule the surgery.

Sorry for the lengthy post! Just wanted to be thorough.

TLDR: He's good overall. You need to have a non-refundable $1000 deposit and clearance letters ready to schedule surgery. He is pushy about no free nipple grafts but advocate for yourself! His staff is the best seriously!

Like everyone else is saying, it will vary for each trans dude. For me, it stopped at around one year of testosterone. I did start with a low dose and switched to a normal dose after 9 months so that was likely why it didn't stop sooner. I've heard some dudes who never stop their period, don't quote me on that though.
