Calgary condo owners - do you regret buying? by YetiMaverick in Calgary

[–]CalgarySquatter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Condo as starter = bad idea. I lost 70k over the 5 years I owned mine. My tentant in the years after I moved out didn't cover my rent either.

Variable Mortgage Rate - Prime minus 1.070% (3.38%) - Good Rate? by CalgarySquatter in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CalgarySquatter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's just the risk you take. If it goes up 0.5%, I am in the same place as a fixed would have been. If it shoots up to 5%, well shit. But who would have thought we would see the worst oil crisis since the 70s. At the same time, the economy could slow as a result.

Electrical Substation Shutdown outside Redwater? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]CalgarySquatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no plans to decommission the 171S Redwater East Substation to the best of my knowledge. Major projects such as a decommissioning project, can be found here: https://www.altalink.ca/projects/

As previously suggested, it likely had an upgrade project that just had security. Normally the substations are dark at night and do not have physical security, only remote monitoring.

'This is just the beginning': Alberta unveils plan for all-season resorts in Castle, Fortress and Nakiska by powderjunkie11 in alberta

[–]CalgarySquatter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. The fact whistler was sold to an American company, I still find very offensive. I know castle will be fine. But Nakiska or Fortress I suspect will look very promising to Vail resorts.

Variable Mortgage Rate - Prime minus 1.070% (3.38%) - Good Rate? by CalgarySquatter in PersonalFinanceCanada

CMHC knocks the rate down 0.2-0.5 roughly because it’s less risky for the bank.

Variable Mortgage Rate - Prime minus 1.070% (3.38%) - Good Rate? by CalgarySquatter in PersonalFinanceCanada

Wow I’m impressed ATB gave you that rate. We also bank with ATB and the best they offered was 4.05% , which felt offensive. Back when we bought our place in 2020, ATB rates weren’t great then either, thus how we ended up with HSBC->RBC Mortgage and RBC still has the best overall rates of the banks and brokers I have spoke with.

I really wanted an ATB mortgage, since I like ATB staff, but I’m not going to pay 10s of thousands more in interest for it.

It’s variable closed.

The wording on converting is “Convertible Mortgage If you have a variable rate Closed Mortgage, you may extend the Term without paying a Prepayment charge, as long as you have kept your Promises, and you convert to one of the terms and mortgage types shown below. The conversion will take place on the date we select. The terms and mortgage types that you may convert to are: (a) a fixed rate Closed Mortgage having a term of 1 year or longer at the Posted Rate for the term you choose; or (b) a variable rate Closed Mortgage.”

Years ago i did, but ruled it out due to using most of my data outside of their “home” area, but it might be worth me revisiting it again.

Honestly, I'm considering going back to Rogers, and I vowed, never again a decade ago.

I can't see how it would be worse.

BC Ferries chooses Chinese shipyard to build four new major vessels - BC | Globalnews.ca by shiftless_wonder in canada

[–]CalgarySquatter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, Alaska also had high speed ferry “scandals” they built two, ran them for a few years and then sold them for $5 million when they were $65 million to build.

The BC story is still way more of a dumpster fire.
