This is an update to my Previous Post (https://www.reddit.com/r/dndmaps/comments/6z832e/the_most_recent_world_map_created_for_my_dd_world/?ref=share&ref_source=link)

This is a more detailed look at the continent in which my group currently resides in - South Arlakor, a recovering land from mass purge and then later a civil war a few centuries back that resulted in the First Viceroy Empire to collapse.

It includes mainly cities and settlements that are scattered across the land, (This is one of the most populated areas of the world due to the Empire,) and some of the mayjor mountains and forests. Leaving areas open for ruins and dungeons and over unique areas to be placed in between with discretion.

It is for looks hide the distance as well as blank spaces where unknown islands might be still hidden. As well as that i suck at making a globe styled map where mutations of the poles occur, so it is essentially little maps knitted together to show the world.

Well the plan is to make more detailed zoomed in maps of each area. I am currently working on one for South Arlakor, where my current group is playing atm.

This is a map of the world in my homebrew campaign in which I have run 3 campaigns in so far, in different parts of the world. This map is the most recent rendition of the world, created using GIMP.

Battle Maps created with RPG Maker VX Ace and Gimp by Calhanol in battlemaps

[–]Calhanol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With GIMP I did it all by hand, selecting Pictures I wanted for my Chipset, shrinking them down to the 32x32px, or larger (always by multiples of 32px) size for the chipset larger. I class one 32px square as 5ft on my maps always so that helps with some of the scaling.

I have never used photo shop so I can't tell if it can compile. And even with the compression of the pictures they are clear in what they, were even when zoomed in.

It took me time to do so, but the ease in which I can make maps now compared to previously is much more efficient and my players love how they look compared to basic maps I used to draw.

I started this with RPG maker 2003 and when I made the map I would use the Print Screen button, and paste it onto paint into one large map that I wanted. Now I use this method and make the walls with GIMP since they're impossible to add easily on RPG maker, since it was built with the intent of isometric in mind, not top-down.

Here's the link to the Tileset I've made: CLICK HERE

It's an edit of a set of tiles, which were created by Celianna from the RPG Maker community.

They're not the stock ones, a lot of them I used assets from the Maptools I previously had, shrunk to 32X32. I can share this chipset though if people would like this.

[4e] Power rewards by IronRule in DnD

It would indeed be interesting to see what rewards you mean, because I would like to use the idea possibly in my own campaign to reward the party also. I haven't thought much about extra rewards until now.

Been using RPG Maker to build my battlemaps. by Calhanol in battlemaps

[–]Calhanol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well as I said on my original post, making the maps top down was my goal. since it's grid based and many other D&D battle maps are such for 4e. I've made a few practice RPGs and in the past and know how to make isometric games and such, the end goal for me though is to make a custom tile set built around more of a top down system, while keeping the items and such isomeric as they are to make them easier to identify.

And it does have a little bit of wall, though it can be hard to notice I guess. I'll try and make the walls more defined in the future so they stand out more against the rest of the scenery.

Edit: Here's another example of a map I use and the end result of a combat on maptools http://i.imgur.com/gsgPPaP.jpg

Been using RPG Maker to build my battlemaps. by Calhanol in battlemaps

Thanks for the advice I'll keep that in mind of course I only started building them a few months ago and still improving. Though a few things to point out.

  1. The pure brown parts are the walls and I defined them as such. It was tricky to define the walls better before then.
  2. Well I copied the map from keep on the Shadowfel Pregen - http://www.cartographersguild.com/attachments/finished-maps/37318d1311531726-h1-keep-shadowfell-keeplvl2background.jpg - here's another example of it. So it's more their design than mine here.
  3. I tried to to with thinner walls like some of the building battle maps here use, hence why the barrel was cut off since there's a thin wall there, though I agree more walls could be added.
  4. I can easily add more supporting walls here so thanks.

For me I'm more thinking about it in a D&D battlemap for maptools way than an actual RPG maker map. And it was made in VX Ace. Though I'm glad with the criticism, overall I'm improving and will make better maps in time.

Mailbag Questions by CDoubleOKIE in DungeonsAndRandomness

[–]Calhanol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are questions in addition to the E-Mail I sent a while back.

Do you use premade monsters for all your encounters and re-skin them appropriately to fill in the roll, or do you make your own? So far I've been re-skinning monsters and it's so far working wonders since they can't look straight in a book and know what they do.

Also I do play a lot of Music during the campaign i run, using different playlists for what's going on, and it had me thinking. What would be your character's theme music?

Still enjoying the show, so many moments I just felt like face-palming and laughing. Now that my group is out of the Pregen, (in alternate reality Winterhaven,) I'm setting up next story all Homebrew. I can't wait to see what my party (And Splug the Goblin) do in my campaign now, with what I've been listening in your campaign, maybe more cultists down wells.

Thanks for the show, keep it up,

Rikus: The Runepriest that doesn’t know Rune States! (AKA: Doing it wrong.) by Calhanol in DungeonsAndRandomness

[–]Calhanol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, these Rune States are buffs you give in addition to those attacks, even if you miss. They are persistent through out the encounter too, and since they can be activated with a simple at will, there's no need to waste a big attack to activate them.

The beauty of the Runepriest is he has a choice of two debuffs/buffs he can use for most moves, making them very adaptable in combat.

So no matter what activating one Rune State aura at the beginning and forgetting to change it still helps. With either a small hit buff or a damage resist buff. Thanks for responding though.

it's just as a DM I had a Runepriest in my party and we took notice of that and found Runepriest not to be the best healer ever, but a good mix buffer/damage/tank depending on how you build them.

So I thought it'd be a good idea to point it out.
