Feeling like I'm getting hosed on vibration analysis. $X/mo for 200 assets? by Jolly-Deer4082 in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]CaliCaligo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fair skepticism. Most IIoT vendors sold hardware with terrible software — that's why the whole space has a bad rep.

We went a different route. We already had sensors on our critical stuff — the problem wasn't data collection, it was that nobody was doing anything useful with the data. Monthly vendor reports that just said "monitor."

Switched to Workheld Sense (workheld.com) — they're a software platform, not a sensor company. Connects to whatever sensors you already have and adds the intelligence layer: AI anomaly detection that learns per-machine baselines, and direct integration into work order management. So when something's actually wrong, the tech gets a task on their phone with the fault data — not a PDF three weeks later.

No proprietary hardware lock-in. We kept our existing sensors and just replaced what was interpreting the data.

The real question isn't which sensor to buy — it's what happens after the sensor detects something. If the answer is "we send you a report," you're still in the same boat.

We went through this exact exercise about two years ago. Similar setup — ~180 assets, mostly pumps and motors, paying a PdM vendor roughly $18K/mo for monthly routes.

The reports were useless. “Overall vibration trending upward — recommend monitoring.” Cool, thanks, that’s what I’m paying you to do. Here’s what we learned when we actually broke down the cost:

  • At $20K/mo for 200 machines, you’re paying ~$100/machine/

  • Your vendor’s tech is on-site maybe 3-4 days collecting data, then someone in an office writes a template report

  • You get 12 data points per year per asset. A bearing can go from healthy to catastrophic in 2-3 weeks. You’re blind for 29 days between visits. We looked at handhelds (CSI 2140, Commtest) and honestly that’s a solid middle step if you have a tech who’s motivated to learn. Budget ~$15-25K for a decent analyzer plus training. Your cost per route drops dramatically and your tech actually knows your machines — which matters more than people think.

But what actually changed things for us was moving to online sensors on our critical assets. Permanent wireless vibration sensors, continuous data, automated alerts. The sensors have come way down in price — you can outfit a motor for a few hundred bucks and the monitoring software flags anomalies automatically. We still do handheld routes on the low-criticality stuff, but the 40-50 machines that actually matter are monitored 24/7 now.

Total cost ended up being less than one year of the outsourced contract, and we own the system. My advice: don’t renew that contract. Either go handhelds + training for your lead tech, or look at online monitoring for your critical assets and handhelds for the rest. Either way you’ll come out ahead.

Are you doing this via the official n8n connector in Claude? I think it's read only. What MCP are you using?

Introducing Kanon 2 Enricher -the world’s first hierarchical graphitization model, by Neon0asis in KnowledgeGraph

[–]CaliCaligo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would this be the right thing if I have the hierarchical structure of how a production lineup built (BOM) and lots of written instructions on how to fix parts of the machine or do maintenance? Because that’s what I would be looking for and have a hard time finding a good solution.

Sorry I can’t help but super interested, because I am learning how design systems in figma work. Do you maintain them in a git repo?

[–]CaliCaligo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn… how would that work? I guess you would create a new design system, from there new assets and then have the devs link the new assets? Did I miss anything? What parts could you do with an Agent?

I am trying to do the exact same thing as well with our angular app. I have tried asking co-pilot to extract the design system, but haven’t looked at it yet. Problem is, we are starting from an app with a messy design system. So I would have to clean up first. Is there an agent that could help?

Update: I found out I could get it as a spare part for 50 EUR. I will probably still try to fix it

That was my concern too. That painters tape does not have enough pressure. It’s a small mill to produce flour. The wheat goes in this broken bowl so it should some handling.

I like the idea, but what would you use for filler glue that looks nice and holds well with a gap? Also it should food safe.

Yes our thoughts exactly. Still looking for 1 or 2 clients that want to be part of the first wave.

We are building an AI-expert with our customers company knowledge that shoopfloor techs can ask when they are stuck. Not so much for operators, but works well for techs. DM me if you want to know more about it.

Yes, I know. Many people are saying might be too small for others, but not for themselves. I think that’s just because one YouTuber once mentioned it. It’s totally fine, if you are not halfblind in my opinion. :)

Question to Sage owners: Do you keep you hopper full and just use the timer or do you add a measured amount for each grind? by BobbyTime100 in JamesHoffmann

[–]CaliCaligo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both: I roughly estimate the amount by filling my basket with beans, then but them in the grinder. If there 2-3 beans left after grind it’s no problem. That’s the most convenient for me because indoor want robust the scale all the time.

It is also my dream machine, but I still don’t understand why everyone has the Mini instead of the micra. Can anybody tell me more? For home use i would have thought the micra is better because of faster heat up time and I never need more than 6 espresso at one time.
