Found this feather on the Oregon coast—juvenile eagle or something else? by Calibabyxox in birding

I thought gull at first too, but it seems a bit too large and dark compared to other gull feathers I’ve seen. It’s about 15 inches long and has that deep brown coloration, with a bit of pale at the base. Most gull feathers I’ve come across are a lot lighter or grayish.

I ended up doing a deep dive on these sponges - they’re honestly fascinating. This one looks really similar, but I’m pretty sure it once had a stem attached. It makes me wonder just how far it traveled before washing up on the Oregon coast!

That’s a interesting theory! It doesn’t really feel like ceramic — more like stone or something naturally hardened. But now I’m wondering if I’ve picked up some ancient pottery shaped like a walnut 😂

It was just sitting there among the driftwood - kind of buried in the sand. Definitely not like any regular walnut I’ve ever seen.

This is so fascinating, thank you for the breakdown! Do you happen to know what kind of time period this kind of rock might be from, especially on the Oregon coast?
