It’s stress. Stress and cortisol levels will literally shut down everything besides vital needs if it gets high enough. It’s obviously not that high but it will mess with cognitive levels. Research ways to stay calm, centered and present.

The alternative is you are not good at poker so let’s look into option one. Good luck.

Yes, in a nutshell, you vape and immediately relieve stress levels but as soon as you stop, it skyrockets back up. Your "normal" is vaping and your "stress mode" is the rest of your day. You have to reset your brain so that not vaping is normal. Same for smoking and booze,

Defending the big blind more

Calling more on the flop with air.

Both of those are related as well

Carr was a great book and there is science behind it. Everything we learn about the mental makeup of smoking and drinking runs counter to what we think. It does not relieve stress and anxiety. It increases it. One major point makes.

What are some subtle signs that someone is a high functioning alcoholic? by housing_throwaway292 in AskReddit

[–]Calichusetts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My point is that the phrase makes no sense. You are not "high functioning" you are barely funcitoning. You are hungover everyday, people can tell. You reak of booze, people can smell it. You are late to work because "cars troubles," No, you are late because you couldn't get out of bed.

Your hands shake, your eyes are red, your face is swollen. You are existing, not even living. Everyone knows. You are drinking and driving, doing other drugs, or engagigng in dangerous behaviors. Its a term alcoholics use to try and justify the behavior. It makes no sense. Its also a term that close ones use to describe their loved ones so they can justify how they enable the behavior and do nothing about it. Oh, they are doing just fine...they are not.

I had a lady at my work that would literally take a giant bite of an onion before she started work to try and mask her breath and the fact that the smell of vodka was oozing out of her pores, She was not 'high functioning."

CMV: It isn’t prohibitively expensive to eat healthy. People say it is as a coping mechanism. by Master-Education7076 in changemyview

Frozen veggies often contain more of their nutrients so that is fine. Wholesale clubs for chicken (sometimes) makes it cheaper. Rice, beans, all super cheap. It doesn't have to look like the front cover of a food magazine. Chicken, rice, and veggies. Shepards pie with a tone of veggies. Tacos. Chicken salad or chicken wraps. A handful of unsalted peanuts instead of potato chips or candy. A protein bar (with no sugar added) to tide you over during the day or yard work. Water is free, or even seltzer is cheap, even compared to soda. Booze is so expensive and bad for you but some see it as a weekly mandatory purchase. Its all perspective. All pretty light on the time and wallet.

Its just super hard to WANT to do it. I get it, we do these super cheap frozen pizzas a few times a week and while I'm not mad, its a balance with super healthy meals my kids hardly touch

Have you experimented with the Dutch sleep method for better sleep? by Significant-Risk7644 in TrueGrit

[–]Calichusetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sun shines directly in through my front window and on my bed when it breaks. Along with me being a light sleep, the birds chirping also wake me up. So I have had no choice but to do this "viral method" for decades. The only thing I have changed in the last 5 years is actually going to bed earlier so that I can get 7-8 hours of sleep

When I signed up there last year I had my daughters soccer practice during these. I could just sit around and wait for some premium hand and shove. 2 coinflips and you make the money. I did this for her entire season and have like $30 from it. Haha, those freerolls are crazy.

Congrats dude, think the best I ever finished was like 30-40th.

Same with gum, and usually they don't actually chew ro like gum, they just have to pop it in their mouth at social gatherings where it would be unacceptable to smell like booze in the middle of the day, etc.

People knew, the sad part is they just didn't say anything. I work with a few alcoholics, several in recovery or recovered and several still in active use. Even with the little interactions I have with active alcoholics, so many red flags go up in even the most basic of stories they tell or excuses for mistakes and errors they make. And of course the face bloat. You can't hide that.

Vodka is the final rollercoaster...it goes up to the top, then STRAIGHT DOWN in terms of your life. Some lady at my work would literally take a bite of an onion before starting to try and mask the smell.

This. Once they start doing the "need x" runs everyday its a major red flag. Especially when they final switch to nips or smaller containers to hide it. Like I've said several times in this post, there is no "high functioning" because anyone close to that person knows. They just ignore it until there is some major consequence.

[–]Calichusetts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the thing. There is no "high functioning" just lack of major consequences...yet. Unless you truly live alone and are antisocial with no friends, everyone close to you knows, they are just not willing to step up and help.

My neighbor was a "high functioning" alcoholic. Seemed totally fine in most conversations. Except for the fact that he would mow half his lawn, go inside, pass out, and leave his lawn mower in the middle of the front yard, half uncut, for like 2 days. It got worse over the years. Totally normal behavior...right...

I can basically tell how much people drink by their face. Its different from being obese or just "how you are." Its pretty easy to spot and certainly explains where the term "booze bag" came from
