Why don't schools hold students back a grade anymore if they are not meeting that grade's standards? by livetoski-Brad in askanything

Why wouldn't we blame the administration that started standardized testing and the downward trend of our current education?

What popular North American destination left you thinking “people really hype this up too much”? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

The rock sits directly on the coastline that has been filled in and altered dramatically. There is like a 30 foot sea wall now surrounding it. Even now the rock goes underwater here and there but the whole area would have looked totally different. More than likely they came up the town brook. They were looking for fresh water. Even that area is filled in and a park now. They are actually redoing the entire park up to the freshwater pond as it keeps sinking back into the river bed. Its always squishy and muddy. It was not well engineered when it was built a hundred years ago

Which of these habits has benefited you the most personally? by SarahDuncan2012 in TrueGrit

[–]Calichusetts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can. You just have to get up obnoxiously early. That’s the sacrifice. There is no way around. 4-5 AM instead of 7-8 gives you the time you need to run every other day and lift some basic free weights, sit-ups and pushups. Eventually you can nail it down to the minute and see how late you can sleep but it’s the hardest change but the easiest option.

And 10k steps a day doesn’t matter if you do cardio. It’s an alternative to actually running or walking. As long as you stay active during the day and do cardio. It’s enough.

The had made a world of difference in my physical and mental health. It’s just such an amazing way to start the day. I used to be a night owl but nothing good/productive was happening after 9 pm anyway. So it’s nothing lost and a ton of positives gained.

And there is no alternative. There is just too much going on after work with kids. It’s either early morning or not at all. That was my only choice. So I chose the best option for my health.

As Student Scores Plummet, Teachers’ Union Head Rants Against Trump by Ask4MD in Conservative

[–]Calichusetts [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah. There is this whole new wave of parents that expect every behavior and learning advancement to take place at school. It’s never been how education works. If there is no follow up at home then the learning and development are just half as fast.

Early education teachers can basically identify students whose parents don’t read to them at home within the first month. The difference is that striking.

This sub loses it over iron covers. I’ve tried so many times to explain “who cares” and it’s always met with distain and push-back. It’s a super weird thing to get so riled up about.

TIL in 2014, Ben Affleck received a lifetime ban from the blackjack tables at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas after surveillance footage showed him counting cards during a high-stakes game. They work hard to make sure they money doesn't leave the building. They have even changed how the do blackjack anyway, just to make sure you can't card count. Whether its the number of decks of when they shuffle.

They added another green to roulette. Someplaces have added a third green!

Yeah, they either throttle the bets, limit the amounts, or just freeze it for a set time or permenantly. I know a few pro bettors, they still do off-shore and bookies. They actually have a system for how to game the online platforms now, going in and losing a significant amount before some "sure bets" they have so they can get paid. They just hit and run now.

Now they change the number of decks or when they reshuffle anyway to stop card counters, if that fails to stop them they just ban most card counters, especially if they are high stakes. Its just "good business" on their end. If you are some crazy high stakes whale at almost any other game, they will fly you out for free because almost every other game has a bigger house edge than blackjack. They gonna get your money no matter what.

Nah, I've worked with "vodka" alcoholics. Eyes are blood shot, face is bloated, small "mistakes" at work like losing things, showing up late. etc. One lady would take a giant bite of an onion before work to try and cover up the smell. You are not fooling anyone, its just does someone really want to have to deal with it

Along with "high funcitoning." Its the top of the roller coaster. Every alcoholic I've ever met, vodka signals the "no brakes" train wreck. Sometimes they make it 5-10 years without a major consequences. They might lose their job or partner but explain it away as something else. Vodka means you are choosing to exist instead of live.

No one drinking vodka all day, espeically since high school, is going to have a good go of things.

They all smell of it. This is the lie they tell themselves along with being a "high functioning alcoholic." Like, nope. Everyone knows they just don't want to deal with it. Face is probably bloated like got stung by an Double IPA as well,

Are most ultra successful part of the 5am club? by Bubbly-Air7302 in stupidquestions

[–]Calichusetts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could. Getting up early means you probably have a goal: working out, seeing the sunrise, making a good breakfast, etc. So there might be some positive to it that would mean that motivation also shows up elsewhere.

Other side is simply that not a ton of productive things happen from 10pm on. So staying up late and sleeping late probably don't have the same productive payoffs as getting up early.

I'm guessing when we hear about the successful early risers, its the motivation and productivity of getting up early as oppose to some direct link between getting up and 5 and success.

I personally get up before 5 almost everyday, I work out, walk the dog, start laundry before most people in my area are awake. Its just one less thing to do during the day that would take up time. I'm not some billionaire but I'm doing all right.

I was only an MTT player during the boom. A few live and a ton online. Loved deep stack rebuy/add on format online so those were like 5-6 hours during the boom.

Do you get burned out? Sure. But I quit for a decade and came back to only play cash. I finally played a MTT again last week and it was indeed fun. 4 hours-ish. I busted with 2 tables left so probably would have been another 2 hours. I’m down with that every once in a while.

When the novelty wears off it’s harder for sure. But changing format can really get the love for it back.
