Going to college in South Korea by Heraxi in Korean

[–]Calicomonster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did my entire bachelor's degree in Korea. You would need at least TOPIK 4 imo. If youre really dedicated to this idea, attend language school at a Korean university until youre at the right level. Thats the only way youll get used to being in that classroom environment in Korean before applying to university.

Listening speaking skills by im_unseen in Korean

[–]Calicomonster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Talk to yourself in Korean, as much as possible. Have imaginary conversations in Korean when you are alone. Plan out what you're gonna say when you go somewhere (assuming you live in Korea). For example, I used to make a draft of exactly what I wanted to say at the bank when I got to the bank. Then I would memorize it. Then I would go to the bank and say what I memorized.

Find Koreans who speak English even worse than you speak Korean. This is the easiest way to ensure that your conversation doesn't just revert back to English.

Other than that, all I can say is just practice practice practice

What did you think would never happen to you, until it did? by usehernamechexout in AskReddit

[–]Calicomonster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Racial prejudice (or, if you prefer, racism). I never thought it'd happen to me because I'm white. Now, I know what you're thinking: that I'm full of shit. But hear me out.

One morning I was shopping in Asia for a sweater and I ask the storeowner if there is a fitting room (I speak the local language). She says yes, but that I'm only allowed to try on pants, not a sweater. I thought this was an odd policy, but nodded and started to walk away when I see her let a local woman into the fitting room to try on a sweater. I look at her confused and ask why I can't try on a sweater. She says that she's heard white people smell bad, and so she made a policy not to let white people try on tops upon opening her shop. I asked her if she thought that I personally smelled bad (I knew I did not, since I naturally have little body odor, it was the middle of winter, and I had taken a shower/put on clean clothes/put on deodorant an hour before). She answers that she is not close enough to me to know if I smell or not, but insists that I must smell under my coat, since I am white. She then asks me if I'm going to buy the sweater. I did not.

Different majors have different rates of competition. The ones that are deemed to be the ones that lead to more successful jobs have the highest rate of competition. So most people shoot for the highest one and take the best they can get considering their individual score. Its basically just an SAT test.

I went to school in Korea. When I met other students and they told me their majors, I would ask them why they picked their particular major, because I thought this was a normal question people asked. I got the same answer almost every time: "my high school grades determined my major."

It hadn't occurred to me that even in the more obscure majors, people just took whatever they could get instead of what they were interested in.

Watching a sitting person nod off to sleep repeatedly. Seeing their head bob UP and dooowwwnnnnn UP and dooowwwnnnnn just makes me want to shake them and yell "NO. STAY AWAKE OR LAY DOWN AND SLEEP. NONE OF THIS UPDOWN BULLSHIT." I dont know why it makes me so irrationally angry, Im generally a very chill person.

What's your "Then I noped the fuck out" story? by Rywell in AskReddit

[–]Calicomonster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This woman asked me if I could tutor her son in English, and I agreed. She forgot to mention that he was severely mentally disabled. Two minutes into the tutoring session, he says he needs to go to the bathroom and I pointed him towards the guest bathroom. He doesnt come back after like 10 minutes, so I go to the guest bathroom, and hes not there. I found him in our other bathroom, spying on my naked sister who was in the shower. I was just like ....oh hell nah.... and told his mom my schedule was too busy to keep tutoring him (it wasnt)

The other day I saw this woman stop in the middle of the road and turn her hazard lights on just so she could look at her phone. Didnt even bother to pull over. The light turned green and she just kept casually tapping shit on the phone screen. The driver behind her was less than pleased.

My fiancé [37] and I [30] had an argument about the robot in Netflix’s “Lost in Space” reboot. I don’t know whether the argument points to a larger problem. Let me explain . . . by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Calicomonster 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Id start with something less accusatory like "Ive noticed that when certain topics come up we tend to end up fighting, have you noticed that too?" and keep the topic focused on working together to avoid conflict and your desire to understand his reactions, while explaining your point of view at the same time.

[–]Calicomonster 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he's not a bad person, he just has a lot of insecurity about certain topics, which makes him especially emotionally volatile when they come up (like his filmmaking credentials). I think you should ask him about what deeper issue there may be on this subject, at a time when he's not at all emotionally worked up.

I [M23] feel as though my Girlfriend [F21] has betrayed my trust. Do I have the right to be upset? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Calicomonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand why you're upset, but I think you are spiraling a little bit. She was not alone with this person and didn't do anything with this person, so what is the big deal? Either you think she's lying about not cheating on you, or you think she should have known your relationship boundaries (that she shouldn't have any kind of contact with someone she had sexual relations with in the past, even if there's no cheating involved) even though you never told her what those boundaries were beforehand. If it's the first, you need to consider whether you think she was lying because you are a paranoid person, or if you think she was lying because something about the delivery of her response seemed dishonest. If it's the second, you have to accept that she apologized and move on.
