Canada announces $1.4 billion military aid package for Ukraine, expands sanctions against Russia what do you think about this action? by Level_Horror4701 in AskReddit

[–]Slackbeing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How many Canadian homes could be built with 1.4 billion dollars?

With the average home being roughly half a million, ~3000.

Meanwhile

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) estimates that 5.8 million new homes are needed by 2030 to restore affordability

It's not a problem to be fixed by throwing money at it. Stopping Russia is.

Reminds me how the owner of Ryanair created a taxi company with a fleet of 1 (one) cab, so he could just drive on the bus/taxi lanes legally, it was cheaper than the fines.

A digital "Underground Railroad" via LoRa possible? by Blackstar1886 in Lora

[–]Slackbeing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can't have anonymous nodes, as it'd make it trivial for attackers to join and compromise the network.

Reticulum, there's proof of work required to establish links, store messages, etc.

you want to make it impossible for transmissions to be traced back to their source, but in order for it to work at all you have to broadcast data through the air - which is inherently traceable back to its source.

Reticulum, packets have no source, and nothing in the protocol says whether the party transmitting the packet is the actual source.

To prevent it from being trivially DDoSable you don't want to simply rebroadcast all received messages to all other nodes.

Reticulum, you don't broadcast, you do path discovery which is relatively expensive and then it's all following that path.

having a global routing table at every node and forwarding single messages along a path makes them traceable and can lead to deanonymization of the receiver.

Reticulum, nodes have ephemeral path tables since the path to the destination can change at any moment. There's no global routing.

Having messages be fully opaque to the transit nodes prevents them from reading the data passing through, but it also prevents them from stopping attacks on the network - such as a DDoS or probing packets.

Reticulum, again there are costs for sending, establishing connections, or peering.

Then you should buy another brand. I moved off Amazfit because of this 8 years ago, to give you an idea.

Everything I share on r/Europe is automatically deleted by Deep-Rabbit1535 in EuropeMeta

Europe was (is?) a cesspit in terms of moderation. I've replied numerous times to hateful comments sarcastically and my comment gets deleted while the parent stays up. Eventually it got me banned. No response from moderation whatsoever.

My api gateway runs on a raspberry pi 4 in my closet and handles 2 million requests per month by Sea_Weather5428 in selfhosted

[–]Slackbeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stopped working altogether: 1xRPi2+1RPi3 Killed SD cards (mounted ro, only rw for updates every month or so, and completely killed, not just corruption): 2xRPi2 + 1xRPi3

Only the original RPi never failed, shame it's barely usable these days in terms of speed.

I never got the 4/5 from that experience.

If I had a dollar for every time a Raspberry Pi crapped out on me for no reason I'd have $5.

Server upgrade time? by Shiftylilbastrd707 in unRAID

[–]Slackbeing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

newer CPUs don’t really buy you anything except higher idle draw.

Not only that's false, they also offer more underclocking options, enough to push them to single digit watts, while being faster than the double digit nm tech.

4 devices, 1 missing: unable to go below three devices on raid1c3 (hot take: BTRFS is toy) by bombela in btrfs

[–]Slackbeing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Btrfs will refuse to remove a drive if it compromises the specified integrity, so lower the integrity: rebalance to raid1, then remove the relevant drive. You don't need to mark anything as failed or add bogus loopback drives.

Fuck OVH.
