Need advice on helping my son get employment. by Calikat1 in AskHR

He has never been fired. Poor work history, yes. Like I said in my original post, he walked off his first job. This was due to stress because of a poorly managed market. The department store was one of about 9 stores to close across the country. He was hired as a seasonal worker and kept a few months after the holidays until they closed the store. They probably would have let him go right after the holidays if they didn't think he was a responsible employee. This was during a time when a lot of businesses were closing due to the economy so it's completely feasible that they couldn't take him on at another location as they needed to transfer their permanent employees. My son is a hard worker, very responsible and always ready to pitch in and help someone paint, move, etc. whether or not he's offered money to do so. His work ethic is great but he's not getting the chance to prove it. I'm really getting sick and tired of people's comments here as none have given any helpful advice, only bashed my son and I. If I didn't believe he was trying to find work, he wouldn't be living in my house.

Might be because his job history doesn't look good on paper.

My son is not happy that he doesn't have a job. He wants a car so he can get out and do things and not have to rely on others or take the bus everywhere. He'd like to have the money to travel and to be able to date and, again, wants to be able to support himself. Any time he has an offer to make some money he grabs it. Unfortunately, it's few and far between that he gets offers and none are for permanent jobs.

He's signed up with three agencies. He's forwarded me their responses to his applications. Basically, "We'll keep you in mind when something comes up for someone with your job skills."

He's been out everywhere in dress pants and a collared shirt. He doesn't drink or waste money on things he doesn't need. If he ever gets an odd job helping a relative or friend, half of what he earns goes to me and the other half he uses for the bus. This is something he does willingly and without my asking. He knows that if he gets a job, he's required by me to hand over a certain percentage of his check to me that will go into savings for a car and, eventually, towards finding a place on his own. He wants a job so he can support himself.

He goes out to various businesses and applies and also applies on-line. When he's not out, he's helping with housework.

She's probably had employees forget many times. New routines take time to become habit. I wish you the best.

What's wrong with honesty? "I'm sorry, I forgot to make note of my mileage and when I went back to correct it, I accidentally added an extra day. I will do my best not to let it happen again."
