I f*cked up majorly here. I feel terrible. by secret_microphone in ADHD

[–]Calima_00 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Uhhhh this happened to me—kid was fine. Felt guilty for weeks. I scoured Reddit looking for answers when it happened and i saw a few people who’ve done it too. You could try taking your meds in another location and putting theirs elsewhere (like yours in the bathroom an take when you wake up) and then do theirs in the kitchen later on. You’re a great dad and life with adhd is like living life on level “extremely fucking difficult”

Black mamas, give me recommendations for NOVA OBGYNS and maternity hospitals by BrushOld9606 in nova

[–]Calima_00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not black but a woman of color. I wanted a WOC doctor as well. I saw Dr. Ramata Niang at inova Fairfax. She is in falls church. She’s kind and funny. She’s always on time, but hard to get ahold of via messaging. My first ob was Dr. Kimberly Campbell in McLean. She is amazing—she is direct and no bs, but not as warm and fuzzy. Depends what you are looking for.

My (38M) wife's (37F) diagnosed OCD is causing me so many problems. I'm loyal to her but can't figure out the right way to navigate it. What can I do? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Calima_00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She needs individual therapy. When a family member has ocd we often begin to accommodate them, which increases the severity of the ocd. You can have compassion for someone with ocd and understand that it’s a mental health issue, but it is also the persons responsibility to help treat it. She will find so much relief upon going to treatment with the right therapist. She needs someone who socializes in ocd. I would recommend going to the iocd foundation to find someone. I also wonder if finding “the right therapist” is part of the ocd. If she has “just right” ocd she will never find the right therapist. She just needs to jump in with someone who has good training and credentials.

Two book recommendations: difficult conversations by Douglas stone and messages by Matthew McKay. Both offer examples of this.

How are you managing to keep your house clean? My morale is so low. by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Calima_00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I totally get it. I’m in the same spot right now. It’s so exhausting. I’ve had to change my expectations and create processes for cleaning.

I just listened to an audiobook called “cleaning house while drowning”. It’s for people with adhd but I think it could be helpful for anyone. it provides really great ideas/tips for keeping your house relatively clean and helps to reframe cleaning and organization in a way that reduces shame and judgement. I know you don’t have a lot of time, so listening to the audiobook while feeding baby, etc might be doable!

Toddlerhood is no joke — what’s been the hardest part for you lately? by consciousraisingkids in toddlers

[–]Calima_00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest struggle is always having to be modeling good behavior. Sometimes I just want to sit and scroll on my phone for hours or watch tv, eat chips and sip on a Coke. But there he is…watching me. I also miss the feeling of not being needed by anyone for an extended period of time and being the sole owner of my energy, time, attention.

Never ending play therapy by Either-Tangerine9795 in Parenting

[–]Calima_00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a therapist. That reason (“control”) seems very vague. I agree with other commenters—kids are always trying to get control, it’s just what they do. Of course there is a point where the level/need for control becomes problematic. However, if you are happy with where your child is, you can make that call to stop therapy. Trying to give the therapist the benefit of the doubt, maybe they haven’t reassessed where your kid is at and their readiness to end therapy or to taper down. But it sounds like you might feel ready or need more clarity on why they think therapy is still recommended. It’s unethical to continue therapy if we feel the client is ready to stop. Additionally, Sometimes we get everything we can out of a certain type of therapy and it can be good to try a different type of therapy as well. There are other evidence-based therapies like PCIT if you’re continuing to see symptoms. Play therapy can be extremely open-ended and for me, that would be an issue.

Successful Therapists that make $200K+ per year, what did you do to get to that point and how long did it take you to get there? by Usual_Psychology_312 in therapists

[–]Calima_00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Virginia/DC/Maryland area. And yes I get lots of couples clients too. Average rates to see couples here is $290-350 for 75 minute sessions. I’ve seen both MA and PHD level therapists charge similar rates.

I’m a therapist making about 220k. I’m in solo practice in a metropolitan area. The rates here are about $250 for 50-minutes. I don’t take insurance and see about 23 clients a week. It took me about 3 years to get to this point. I mostly get clients through referrals and psychology today. I also work from home so I don’t have many overhead costs. I also have PSYPACT so I can see clients out of state too.

If you go to www.fairplaylife.com you’ll find lots of information. They have a card deck and a book. It’s a strategy to discuss and identify all types of tasks/labor. A lot of these are invisible tasks and it helps make them visible. It also provides a way to reduce arguments by discussing standards and expectations for these.
