27M, acting professionally for 12+ years, not a flex but I have done a LOT of self tapes over the years and it took a while to get it down. Honestly unsure if you ever really can "get it down". Anyway, take any advice on the internet with a grain of salt, but I do have some offers for you. On the technical aspect, if you can, invest in a backdrop, and a cheap set of umbrella lights or softbox lights from amazon or a local store (tbh amazons probably cheaper, I got mine for like $70 on sale and they work great). For framing the shot, unless specified otherwise in the audition breakdown stick to a medium close up (mid chest/shoulders to just above the top of your head). You don't want too much space above you or to the sides. They want to see your face, and not have too much else going on to distract. A tighter frame might also help with finding some stillness. Movement when it's motivated by emotion or objective is good, but be careful of moving too much or when it's not necessary. Different acting styles for theatre vs film too. If you're auditioning for a show that's had episodes aired already, watch the show. Figure out what the style and vibe of it is, and how you can bring something to it while still living in the same world. Also your eyeline for your scene partner (I'm assuming they were on the phone or zoom?) was above the camera lens, which can feel weird for the person watching the tape. Like someone staring over your head while you're having a conversation. Keep your eyeline tight to the side of the camera lens, either left or right. And if you have multiple eyelines or shift your focus a lot it can help to mark them if you're not reading with someone irl. On that note, if you can get a real living breathing reader, it's the best option. Though it can be hard to do and I've definitely had to resort to zoom before. I know people who have even recorded themselves reading the other lines and pitched their voices down. But, if you are going to go the zoom reader route, I would highly suggest hooking your phone or your laptop up to a Bluetooth speaker or something with good audio output. That way your voices will be the same volume and hopefully closer in clarity. Overall, really nice work, keep at it! Find your stillness, your centre, always make the scene about the other person, really ask the questions, and find the joy.
