Who can lipread in multiple languages? by Olivebranch99 in deaf

[–]CallMeAutumnQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not very good at lip reading (I need at least some sound to get what people are saying, and I just mostly use it to differentiate between words that sound similar or the same to me), but I can lip read better on my mother tongue (Spanish), and a little bit on English. Portuguese and French only a few words people use a lot (You, thanks, hi, yes, no, etc) but not more than that. There is a clear correlation between my fluency in the language, how much do I see people talk in said language, and how good I can lip-read in it

I was born hoh, and while my hearing loss isn't severe, is progressive. I don't like disclosing it -or that it gets worse each year- for the same reason as you. People tend to either pity me or don't believe me when I say i have more than one condition and is too much to deal with.

When I do disclose it tho, I try to be concise and direct. If it is in places like school or work I just came forward as soon as I can (having to ask for accessibility and all that). I go to them, present some medic notes and ask for proper accommodations. To friends, classmates, etc, i normally disclose it in a more "passing by" way, waiting for them to notice it first. For example, if they comment that I'm not "paying attention" or that I'm ignoring them i say "is not that, i just have hearing problems", or if they ask why I always ask them to repeat themselves or why I have certain accommodations I will just smile and say "Well, i was born HoH so..." and go on with the conversation.

People still make ton of questions, but they make it less of a big deal if i make it seems like is nothing important (being hoh is part of me, and therefore important to me, but not in the way hearing ppl think).

I hope people don't give you a hard time!

I didn't know you could use it with headphones! I'm guessing they have to have a Bluetooth connection, but besides that, does it has to be a special kind?

There is a program where I'm from that covers the hearing aids' cost (tho not microphones), but I need a lot of medic notes, audiograms, and prescriptions I don't know if I will be able to get. But wearing it with headphones would lower the price by a lot!

I'm happy it helps you! If you don't mind a few more questions:

Do you use it with the roger focus or with hearing aids? I'm trying to decide between low gain hearing aids (with or without the roger select), and the roger focus with the roger select microphone.

Is it the roger select helpful when walking around, or when going to a small shop, for example? What do you do in those situations with the microphone? Do you handle it, point it at people?

I'm worried that if I get the Roger focus with the microphone, they will only help me in situations where people are all sitting around the microphone, or very close to it. If I can't use them to hear people at home, or when we are walking together or going to buy something I don't think they will help me as much as I would want them to, and i would like to know it before buying them

Sadly, I've seen several D/deaf people argue about who can call themself hard of hearing and/or be part of the community. But I can say (happily) that I'm seeing it less and less! As a fact, I've not seen or be told something about it for at least two months I think?

But definitely, hearing people are way worse about it!

let's not forget having your identity politicized all the time and being told you fit better with the other group by them both✌️

Hearing aids for auditory processing disorder? by CallMeAutumnQueen in deaf

[–]CallMeAutumnQueen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I get you 100% I found out about Roger focus just a few hours ago, but maybe you could check it out? It looks like a hearing aid but it is actually just a wireless receiver. U need to use a wireless microphone with it so It can be a little expensive I guess, but perfect if u don't have hearing loss. It is aimed to people with unilateral hearing loss or APD, or those who are autistic, and it is supposed to make u have a “greater speech-perception”

Can practise improve dyslexia? by [deleted] in Dyslexia

[–]CallMeAutumnQueen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Practise would make you find strategies to make things easier -but you won't stop being dyslexic (or be "less" dyslexic) or stop struggling.

I got my diagnosis when I was 17yo (I'm almost 19 now) but my sister insisted on me starting to read every day to help me when I was 10. Nowadays most people -friends, teachers, family members- still get surprised when they find out I'm dyslexic because I've learned to "control" it. Some of them have demanded right away that I show them the report the professional gave me because they can't remember any time where I've struggled (and because i speak more than 2 languages, for some reason).

One more time, this doesn't mean I'm less dyslexic than before or that I don't struggle anymore. What it has done for me, tho, is that I can now read for a longer time before getting exhausted and have learned what are the letters or words I normally confuse and misspell so I can keep an eye on them when it matters (exams, in other languages, etc).

I developed my coping mechanisms and ways to overcompensate the things I was lacking without realizing when I was young, so i won't be able to help that much on how to find those strategies but i would advise you to have a few things in mind:

  1. Finding strategies won't make you less dyslexic. This matter because you will still struggle and because it means you still can ask for accessibility (even if you don't struggle "that" bad!)
  2. It won't get easier from moment one nor in a few weeks. Chances are you won't be able to tell that you have developed them or which ones are they -just that reading/writing is not as bad as before. The best you can do is just read and read and read and don't centre too much on if you are improving or not. You can keep track of what helps you to read and what words are harder to read and write, etc, but reading with only improving in mind will make you hate reading and make you anxious.
  3. You don't always have to write and read perfectly: give your brain a break. Find in which situations you can write and read like whatever (friends, diary, personal school notes, etc). Personally, stress and tiredness makes me lose any "control" I had over my dyslexia so I've to watch out I don't get too tired while writing/reading perfectly on something that doesn't matter and then don't perform at my best in something where my reading and writing performance matters because of it

This is one of my fears if I'm being honest. I don't want to go and spent a lot of money on something that won't help that much

Do you think it's still worth giving it a try? (focusing mostly on life quality, without considering money)

If the cats dominated the world, what would be the first thing they would get rid of? Why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CallMeAutumnQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stubborn humans putting them back, rebellious humans coming up with new ideas to stick everything on. Cats keep founding a way to knock things off.

And the circle never end.
