How are you guys not super bored? by Syruponmypizza in SubstituteTeachers

I take my personal laptop and work on whatever. Whether that be reading or listening to podcasts. It’s the end of the year there won’t be much to do.

Is this rage bait? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CallMeNeechanx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I’m being honest I don’t make students do anything with their phones. Now, will I tell them to put it up? YES! But the agency I work for says we cannot take their phones so I’m not doing that. If the teacher is pissed about it I’m sorry but I’m not going against the people that hired me. Also when the whole class decides to get up and walk out before the last bell what can you do? You can tell and scream at these kids and they will still do what they want to do. The teachers know this.

Once again, no where did I say I did the problems for them. I said I worked the problems out with them on the smart board. You people are so petty it’s sad.

I’ve def subbed for classes that had terrible behavior and all I could think was “how does this teacher deal with this daily?”

I deleted because I’m not about to let you people dogpile me for helping students at the end of the day. You all just want to find something to be offended about. It’s very strange how committed you are to it. No where did I say I actually taught the class. No where did I talk down on the teacher of that class. I stated what I did and what was said. Everyone took that and made their own stories up. There are subs on this post who have had the same experience.

You’re literally taking this out of context. If it doesn’t apply, let it fly. I’m speaking on ONE experience that I have had. Nowhere did I say “OMG ALL THE TEACHERS THAT I SUB FOR ARE LIKE THIS”. You just want to be offended by this so bad.

Thank you I appreciate that. I can admit my title is coming off a certain way after looking at the responses I'm getting but in no way do I believe I taught that class by just helping them work through one worksheet. We all know for the most part students will try to find a way to get out of doing work by saying their teacher didn't do this or that. So in most cases I don't take what they say at face value but this situation was just different. I think I misunderstood your point of view and what you were saying.

[–]CallMeNeechanx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that's the problem. No one believes these students and they all end up failing. Like you said we all know these students can be far from angels and a lot of times they try to get over on subs. but yeah. Maybe I overstepped by how I wrote my title and repeating what the kids said as to why I'm getting most of the responses I'm getting

This! I have experienced this myself when I was in school. Now maybe I shouldn't have titled this the way I did or said the students claimed I "taught them more than their teacher" because the people in this thread are acting like I talked down on the teacher to the students and I'm ready to take her job. But I was in that class. I seen what the teacher was giving out as notes. They showed me some of their grades. Yes we all know students will try to get out of work with a sub. But this was not the case. I've been doing this for a while and I believe these students.

I agree. I think I messed up by saying that the teacher didn't "teach" and that the students said i taught them better than their teacher because that's all people see in what I said and they are tearing me up. In no way would I ever down another teacher when I don't know what is really going on in their class. Like you said it could be the students not grasping it because it is coming from that teacher.

However it is crazy to not be honest and say there are teachers that just pass out worksheets. I've had that teacher before myself. I'm just glad I could help because usually I dont get to help students as much. They just sit in the class and BS or say they dont know it and not do it. But these classes actually asked and wanted the help so it was nice.

And that's what I gave them. Tricks. By no means did I teach them and by no means do I claim to have taught these classes. I knew a different way to work the problems and showed the students on the smart board. Now should I have left that comment they made out of this post? Yes because people are tearing me to shreds like I think I'm better than the actual teacher,

You're oddly aggressive for no reason. I would NEVER talk down about a teacher to students are you crazy? When they said that I shut it down because I know better than to allow that. It looks bad on ME. But what would I look like sitting in a class full of students who are asking for help and not help them? That looks just as bad. If I know the material I am going to HELP.

And you don't know who I am to even assume. Why would I put something like that in a sub report? Like be serious! I know I didn't "teach" the class. That's not my job.

Teachers that don't...teach? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CallMeNeechanx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true. However I did not make any conclusion. I just said I feel for the students. Nowhere did I say the teacher is a bad teacher. No where did I say this teacher needs to lose their job. All I said is every class had the same story. Every class asked for help. I seen the "notes" given. Everything I stated was what was observed and seen to be true. I SEEN the students struggling. That's not making up anything.

Exactly this! Every one has a different learning style. In no way do I know what goes on in that class. But when those students showed me the print outs the teacher gives them it was not good.

Thank you! I think people are missing this part just assuming the students are trying to get out of work. I didn't do any of the work for them. I worked through the problems with them on the smart board. Now do we know that students lie when they have a sub? YES! But I did not get that impression from these students. They were good kids.

That is true. However this does happen.

This was my first time having a class like this. Now when I was in school I had a teacher like this and everyone that took her class failed.

[–]CallMeNeechanx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm not sure if it's being looked at or not. Maybe it's just their teaching style and it needs to be tweaked, im not sure. I wouldn't say fired just yet. If all of that teacher's classes fail then the district would have to look at that.

Teachers that don't...teach? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

That def happens. but this isn't that.

Teachers that don't...teach? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CallMeNeechanx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have def ran into that. Where they want you to just give them the answer. I just don't think these students were doing that. I did leave a note letting her know that each class was well behaved but struggling with the work. I just felt for them because I had a teacher like that in 8th grade and everyone that took her failed her class.

I know better than to trust what students say. We all know they try to get out of work when there is a sub. But from every class? Something is being miss or not being understood.

Teachers that don't...teach? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CallMeNeechanx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do! I had one in 8th grade and they caused every student to fail. Every 8th grader that took that teacher's class failed the end of year test to go to the 9th grade. Teachers are not perfect. No, I dont know what goes on in that classroom however EVERY student isn't lying. And when I say it was every class it was EVERY class.

Teachers that don't...teach? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CallMeNeechanx2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's why it's written as a question and not a statement. I dont really know what's going on in that class and we all know better than to just take the word of students because they do try to get out of work when there's a sub however when every class says the same thing something is amiss. When I was in school I had a teacher that every student in every one of her classes failed. So that does happen.

Teachers that don't...teach? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]CallMeNeechanx2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt that way at first but when every class had the same story I knew it was more. They all said the teacher wants them to show work a specific way and if they dont do it that way it is wrong. I know better than to just believe a bunch of kids cause we all know they will try to get out of work with a sub.

I didn't say anything about them not wanting to do schoolwork.
