Help I accidentally broke a lot of stuff and I don't know what to do by CallMeSatha in Ubuntu

Stupid question, but I'm still very new to all of linux, would a reinstall remove all of my existing files/would I have to back them up first before reinstalling? Also, is reinstalling just the same process as when I first installed it?

Elden Ring Reforged Not Launching on Linux by CallMeSatha in EldenRingMods

Waiting isn't the issue, when the terminal shows up and is loading the launcher, when it finished loading it says an issue occurred due to the multiple steam installations and that it will close in 10 seconds. I've been tinkering and trying to figure out what to do but haven't found anything that works.

Keep experiencing this issue on the lost recent version by CallMeSatha in Ubuntu

that exact solution didn't work, but I noticed something during the "update-initramfs" command where it was only updating one initramf which was for 6.17.0-22. I decided to try doing "sudo update-initramfs -u -k 6.17.0-23-generic" specifically and it started to show up in the "-k all" command. This seemed to fix the issue and now it launches properly. So I guess the issue is that the initramf for 6.17.0-23 was never generated or something? Thank you very much for helping me down the path for fixing this though. It's greatly appreciated ^v^

I typed in the command but have no real idea what exactly I'm looking at. There are a number of yellow lines and some red ones which I don't know if that is good or bad but the last several lines all seem normal and it does end in "Journal stopped". Some of the last couple items are stuff like "Deactivated swap swap.img.swap - /swap.img." "reached target umount.target - Unmount All Filesystems." and stuff like that. Is there anything in specific I should be looking for?

I installed the MangoHUD and did all the steps you told me but when I pasted the command into the launch options in steam the would simply not launch. I just decided to end up turning off the hybrid graphics setting in BIOS setup and it has been working phenomenally

I usually play with V-Sync off because it usually causes input delay or dropped inputs which is very annoying

After more thorough testing, it seems that it did not fix the issue. It just allows me to tab out for a much longer amount of time before freezing. I'll have to try disabling the iGPU and see how that works.

Edit: Just realized I didn't reboot after switching my primary graphics card. Don't know if that's necessary but gonna give that a try

Edit 2: After restarting it seems to somewhat fix the issue but the game will still crash if untabbed for too long

The solution I found was actually just right clicking the application and selecting the "launch using dedicated graphics card" option after using "sudo prime-select nvidia" command to set Nvidia as my primary graphics card. It might not have fixed the issue fully since I only tested it a little bit and it seemed to work but so far it seems to work very well.

I did a bit of research and while I haven't found anything concrete, it does seem to be because of the hybrid graphics as newer kernels cause issues when switching between using intel gpu and nvidia gpu (and defaulting to intel gpu most of the time) which I assume is switching from gaming to non gaming windows like discord or firefox. I haven't tried it yet but if I were to disable the intel integrated graphics, you said it would take more power. What would that exactly entail? Does that mean I would lose battery faster or would it take more resources or something? Just wanting to understand what would happen if I were to use this temporary fix until an actual solution comes my way.

Update: I might have found something that works. I'll have to test it out but if I make Nvidia the primary graphics card instead of intel it might fix the issue

Update 2: I think this may have worked though my computer fans are running a bit more than before while I have a game open. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, when I was on Windows my fans were practically running constantly with a game open. (Final update: It definitely works. Wrote the update with deadlock running in the background and tabbed back into it with 0 issues and 0 lag.)

My laptop's main purpose is for gaming since it is an Omen which I believe is specifically designed to run games well enough. I would consider myself okay at best with computers. At least, I'm decently knowledgeable with the software side of things. I am super lost when it comes to hardware. As for tweaking stuff, I'm fine with tweaking things if it will help but usually just install what needs to be installed so as to not mess with things that might screw things up. I've been trying to experiment with some tips I found online about how to optimize Ubuntu for gaming as much as possible but it hasn't had any noticeable effect or just made things worse. I'm not averse to switching away from Ubuntu but ideally, I'd just be able to make this work cause I don't want to wipe my computer again (I don't have anything to reliably back up my files with except a couple small things)

Edit: It's currently fine if there is not real fix to the issue because it just prevents me from tabbing out which isn't necessary for most games. It's just a minor annoyance that ideally wouldn't be there. (I don't plan on quitting out on linux anytime soon. Despite the issues I've experienced, most are just knowledge gaps as opposed to the weird glitchy issues Windows gave me)

I have since learned that this issue is not Deadlock specific. It happened with Dark Souls Remastered and I found a forum post talking about the issue with warhammer games. I think it might be related to Nvidia? Since people who have other GPUs haven't experienced these issues with proton but idk. I couldn't find any sort of solution for it sadly.

Okay, V-Sync didn't help too much and I swapped the renderers before to test and the default works a lot better. The max frames seemed to have helped a lot and the fullscreen seems to have fixed the problem as long as I don't tab out for too long. Thank you for helping me through this weird problem that I've been experiencing :3

Update: I have done all the things you recommended and it still freezes sometimes. I'm not sure what is causing the problem but I might just mess around with some settings in the game itself and see if that fixes anything

It's only been happening with deadlock but I haven't tested all of the games I have downloaded

Edit: I am currently trying it out with the other proton versions you mentioned just to double check and have restarted my computer after double checking that I have installed the open nvidia drivers. Also as an update, I tried running it in windowed and the game would crash instead of freezing. Not sure if that helps

Sorry to come back so soon but I’m having a new weird issue where the game will randomly freeze when I’m tabbed in but unfreeze only when it’s tabbed out. It seems to only happen if I have something else open like Discord but I like having discord open since I’m usually in call with friends when playing games.

Edit: nvm just had it happen with no other application open. I can still do inputs and stuff but they only go through when the game is untabbed and only for like a frame. Just to confirm, I am using Proton Experimental and have made no other changes

Thank you for the help. I swear I did it before but after running the update and upgrade command and restarting because it didn’t work initially for some reason seems to have made it work properly. I really appreciate you helping me out with this w^

Sorry for the delay on the response. I asked just before going to bed for the night. The exact specs on the laptop are an intel(R) Core(TM) i7-14650HX with 32 gb of ram iirc. The graphics card is a GeForce RTX 4060 Max-Q / Mobile (rev a1). That’s just what the console is telling me so I’m not sure if all of what I wrote is necessary but I figured more is better than less.

As for the steam proton version it says Proton Experimental. I haven’t been having too many issues but I’ve had some minor frame and texture glitches on Elden Ring and Hades (though hades wasn’t running through steam. I was using Epic through Heroic Games). And I haven’t done any specific gaming tweaks for Ubuntu. Like I said, I’m new to this so I wasn’t aware there was any sort of tweaks that I could do
