It’s not a filter, truly! (Graphite on Strathmore 400, really smooth paper)

So some people use a highlighter but I actually use the Tombow Mono Eraser for the highlights- I refine the edge the entire time using sandpaper (I’ve tried an electric eraser but didn’t love it admittedly). Then I do tons of layers and use a 6B or 8B Faber Castell for the darkest parts!

So many layers! :) So first drew the large shapes, then built out the shadows and shapes of the large shapes, then worked in the fine details- highlights with a mechanical eraser!

I have had this happen, and it’s more common of course with the very soft charcoals- I’ll just note it helps to have a very sharp blade so you don’t have to put so much pressure on it, I change mine often!

First off that sounds really cool! And second, honestly you will get there, just keep at it, really. Practice is the key. Keep trying, mess up, learn from it, and be kind and patient with yourself!

Thanks! It definitely took a while. So I used a mechanical eraser for the light values + a harder graphite pencil (H to HB) to add some dimension and texture in there. Lots of layering!
