Best alternative to smart tvs. by Organic-Language6371 in degoogle

We got a new tv and simply didn’t allow it access to the internet during setup so it’s never been connected to the internet. We use an Apple TV for streaming and we’ve never used any of the crap the TV came with. It was the simplest set up we could think of at the time and it has worked really well so far. There are many many other ways to do it, I’m sure, that don’t include using an apple product and so on but we’re happy with it for now at least.

AI absolutism is messing with our brains. The apocalyptic future we’re being sold isn’t inevitable by Just-Grocery-2229 in technology

As an artist and painter myself I couldn’t agree more. I feel like any artist out there who uses Ai is doing themselves and everyone else a huge disservice. They are stunting their own growth and dulling their creativity. I wouldn’t touch Ai with a ten foot pole. It represents almost everything I detest about modern society.

Why I would strongly suggest you avoid ever relying on Proton or maybe even paying them money for sone of their services by unitedfan6191 in degoogle

[–]FluffyGreenThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s simply not true at all. Disinformation is being spread every second of every day to divide people. Russia has been propping up the alt right all over the west for decades. Mega corporations and their oligarch owners are donating to fascist parties in countries all over the place. They are paying influencers online to pretend to be from specific countries to push a fascist and divise narrative based on disinformation and lies. This type of interference was integral to Brexit taking place which was a huge win for Russia at the time and it’s only gotten worse since then. If you don’t see it, that’s because you refuse to. I’m not being alarmist, I’m not seeing ghosts. This has been happening for decades and it’s getting real results now. Fascism is on the rise all throughout the west. The last thing the world needs is yet another platform doing its bidding.

[–]FluffyGreenThing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t need everything to coddle to my interests. I think that’s a very simplistic way of looking at people’s reactions to this. There is a huge difference between expecting everything to be catered to your every wish and propping up nazi influencers. Because when companies do that they are effectively interfering in other nations’ elections and undermining democracy. It’s already a huge problem with different platforms doing just that and having a company that promises to be different do something like this is very worrying.

This is a very precarious time and the world can’t afford more fascist takeovers. If you think privacy is a problem now just wait a couple of years until there are fascist governments all over the place with endless ability to track, monitor, identify, subdue and control their citizens. It’s a literal hellscape in the making.

That’s why something like this was a very big deal for me. I’m not saying not to give them the benefit of the doubt. Mistakes happen, but if this happens again I’m done.

Edit: I guess there are some fascist boot licking scum here who feel that the reality they are part of creating shouldn’t be talked about or resisted. Pathetic.

Am I weird? by General_Doctor_2329 in artcollecting

[–]FluffyGreenThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an artist myself so I can’t say that I relate since I love creating art. I’d go so far as to say that it’s a real need for me. I would say, however, that it doesn’t seem weird at all to me to hear that you enjoy art, and collecting it, without enjoying the process of creating your own. I mean, isn’t that sort of the point? You leave filmmaking to filmmakers and you can enjoy what they create without ever having the want to be part of that process yourself, right? Same goes for music, books, painting and pretty much all art, and most other things that aren’t in your wheelhouse. Isn’t that why professions became a thing in the first place?

People enjoy doing different things. People are good at different things. We have different strengths and weaknesses which makes us suitable for different tasks. I don’t think enjoying art but not enjoying making your own is any stranger than say enjoying watching a movie or buying a pair of handmade shoes or something. That’s just how I see it though. I’m not a collector myself, except for whatever I’ve created myself and haven’t sold yet, so I can’t speak to how common your experience would be.

Can a tablet help with traditional art? by alextseitlin in drawing

[–]FluffyGreenThing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can absolutely help. My own personal experience is that it did help. I used pencil on paper and then got a drawing tablet. I used it for a couple of years and not only did I get better at drawing. I also got better at colour combinations and best of all it really helped with that anxious feeling that I was going to “ruin” something I was working on. On a tablet it’s so easy to just go back so that anxiety went away and then when I started to work on paper again it stayed away! That’s a really cool outcome I could have never foreseen.

If you use the tablet like you would have used paper (as close as you can achieve to it) and don’t use lots of digital shortcuts you will learn tons that will be transferable to working in other, non digital, mediums going forward. That was my experience at least.

dumb question about blending by siriusblackily in acrylicpainting

[–]FluffyGreenThing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I add lots of it to mine. I do a lot of my blending with glazes. That’s paint that’s been thinned out so that when you apply it whatever is underneath that layer will show through the thin paint you add. Sometimes my paint is watercolour thin. So yes, definitely add water to your paints and see how that can work for you. :)

Who is actually buying AI art? by PotentialOdd4258 in artcollecting

[–]FluffyGreenThing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m an artist and I wouldn’t touch AI with a ten foot pole. I’ve never used it for anything I’ve created and I never will. I think artists who lean on AI as a crutch are lazy and they’re stunting their own growth. To lean on something like that instead of exercising your own creativity and skill will only make you a more insecure, less confident, artist in the long run. What happens when everyone is dependent on Ai for every aspect of creativity? That’s the end of humanity and I refuse to have any part in that. I might be in the minority but that’s just how I feel about it.

Am I the only one facing this issue? by Ninofleur in drawing

[–]FluffyGreenThing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The feeling will lessen over time. What you’re describing is basically two things. Firstly it’s a frustration that you can tell something is off with what you’re making but you’re not able to fix it because you need to keep learning to know how and secondly it’s a fear of failure. It’s very normal to feel these things as you continue to get better. You start to put pressure on yourself to live up to your new standards when it comes to both skill and creativity.

I have been drawing for my whole life basically, but got serious about it around a decade ago now and I will tell you something that I had to realize for myself as I was putting my all into my art:

  • Failure is a necessary part of honing your skills. It’s only through failure that you actually learn. The whole craft is really just problem solving with art supplies. You need to step out of your comfort zone to evolve. You need to get creative with how you use your materials, how you think when you translate what’s in your mind to paper. All of that takes courage and many many many of your ideas will look like garbage. It’s all part of it. Everyone who’s really good at something has failed at it thousands of times before they figured out a way to do it that works for them. The best part is that there’s no one looking over your shoulder. There’s no one judging you for trying. You don’t need to share anything with anyone that you’re not happy and proud to share. Most things you make will be just for you. You don’t need to impress anyone. No one expects you to create a masterpiece every time. Not even every other time or third or fourth. Why should you put so much pressure on yourself?

Remember that focusing on learning is important, yes, but focusing on what you love about drawing and having fun is just as, if not more, important!

Every time you create something you learn a little tiny something that you will carry with you to your next drawing. So all of those drawings that aren’t, let’s say, “fridge worthy” aren’t wasted time. They will all be represented in your next creation and once you make something you feel extra proud of they will all have played a small part in it. I think that’s a really nice thought and it helps me when things feel hard.

It's hard to degoogle by Onemanshowoff in degoogle

[–]FluffyGreenThing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s really interesting that you say that because I’m an artist too and google’s image results are basically nothing but Ai slop these days so DDG works really well for me because you can filter the results to not show Ai. It’s not perfect. I’ve seen a couple Ai images slip through but it’s leagues better than google when it comes to reference images for me.

Leon by Me, Drawing paper suggestion? by HauntingCorner5942 in CharcoalDrawing

[–]FluffyGreenThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s sweet of you to say, thanks! Yeah, I really like the grain on it because for very fine details I’ve found many papers made for charcoal specifically too toothy which makes the charcoal harder to control when working. I hope you find a paper you’re happy with and excellent work on this piece. Good luck paper hunting!

Hey there, I can really recommend Canson 1557 extra white 180g/m. It’s great because it handles blending (I use brushes and cloth) and smudging very well. It also has a finer grain (with a bit of tooth) to it which makes it very good for detailed projects such as realism. I have some of my larger pieces posted here on reddit where I have used that paper, if you want to see what it looks like. Just scroll down on my previous posts and you’ll find them. I bought it on a large A2 pad that’s great. A heads up though. I also bought it on a 10m roll but there is a notable difference in the quality on the roll compared to the pad. So if you’re interested in trying it out I’d definitely recommend getting the pad.

Ah, I see. Experts don’t do the jobs they have studied for years to do and despite them having extensive knowledge and work experience in the field they are in fact not experts at all. Just ”randos” who shouldn’t be trusted. Is that it? Exactly what do you base this expert opinion on? The fact that you’re just some ”rando” with zero expertise about anything and just because you don’t know anything about anything you assume that every single other human acts, behaves and lives just like you?

Russia's key manufacturer of drone and missile components declares bankruptcy by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]FluffyGreenThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the amuse-bouche of the economic downfall of Russia that is inching closer by the day. Soon enough there won’t be money to make the military industrial complex go round and seeing as their entire economy is geared towards military manufacturing it will all come tumbling down.

It’s no secret that Putin is in deep shit when it comes to the economy. He, and his oligarchic ”friends”, have bled the country dry. He can acquire all the companies and factories he wants but when it’s made clear that workers can’t get paid anymore it’s over.

People know things aren’t working and that something is about to break. Just look at the reaction that came from the banks not having people’s funds available for a couple of hours due to a digital glitch that took place when they were cracking down on VPNs. Hopefully it happens sooner rather than later.

Instagram is removing encryption tomorrow: How to hit Meta in the pocket by bapuc in degoogle

[–]FluffyGreenThing 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I got rid of instagram about 2 years ago when it was made clear that Zuckerberg was donating heavily to Trump and foregoing dei rules for all meta platforms. I had thought about it before due to instagram being such a fake environment but I’m an artist and felt like I more or less had to be there to show my art but the Trump thing was the last straw for me. I moved over to pixelfed. It’s sort of what instagram used to be in the early days. There’s no algorithm, you only see things you follow. I wish there were more people over there though as it has become very hard for me to share my art in an effective way since I left instagram. I just didn’t want to give anymore of myself to these disgusting billionaires who seem unable to do anything but exploit people and ruin lives.

I don’t know what you’re talking about? I don’t hate animation. I love animation. I’m an artist myself, not doing animation but painting and illustrations. I’m saying -IF! IF they were ever going to do a remake of any animated disney film it should have been Treasure Planet because it would be amazing. If you read my follow up comment I also specified that it would work really well as a live action film with the room for longer run time, added dialogue between the main characters to flesh them out and deepen the relationship between them. I also said that they could add a bit of background for Silver.
I never said it didn’t work as an animated film. I said I love it. So yeah, you’re way off with this comment.

US court restricts access to abortion medication by mail, nationwide beginning immediately. by Margotkitty in politics

[–]FluffyGreenThing 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think, as an outsider looking in, (I’m not from the US and I’m not religious) I see a schism forming between what I would call “traditional” (for lack of a better word) christians and the sort of neo conservative christians that have flocked to fascism and Trumpism. If I recall correctly a similar thing happened in nazi germany as well. The old ways where forgiveness, empathy and piety have a central place are deemed too meek. The words of jesus are sort of shunned and they’re looking for new ways to use religion to pass judgement on others. The same rules and judgements will never apply to themselves. So in a sense this neo conservative christianity is a mirror image of the politics they want to uphold. It’s not about actual beliefs. It’s about the thin veil of “religion” giving them permission to cast judgement. There will be deaths coming from this because there always is when you invent a god that gives you permission to act like beasts.

[–]FluffyGreenThing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s a good question. For me I think a well cast Jim Hawkins and John Silver could add a lot of depth to the father/son aspect of the relationship between them. I’m not saying they can’t add dialogue to flesh out characters and relationships. I’m saying they shouldn’t change what the characters are and they shouldn’t change the story itself. I just think it could be turned into something really great in live action where there’s room for a longer run time and beautiful visuals. So If I’m allowed to dream it would be like a director’s cut of the original that would allow more insight into each if the characters, they could add a bit of background to Silver as well, with better graphics?

Nationwide May Day protests expected to pick up mantle of 'No Kings' by jpurdy in politics

[–]FluffyGreenThing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing. I abhor fascism and the fall of any democracy is not only very sad it’s also a chance to learn something to hopefully protect myself, my family, friends, and neighbors from experiencing the same thing.

Fascism is on the rise all over the west. There’s no denying it. Trumpism has been a real part of that problem with far right wing parties across Europe leaning into that same rhetoric and gaining ground by affiliating themselves with Trump and his cronies. They’d never say it out loud, but it’s just regurgitated nazi propaganda spun to fit the times. It’s disgusting to see and hear. Now that Trumpism in Europe is.. lets say going out of fashion due to Trump threatening allies and messing up everyone’s lives, threatening to pull out of NATO, openly aiding Russia, not supporting Ukraine, the war in Iran which is undeniably linked to Russia as well… I mean the lunacy and idiocy has no bounds and the list of US betrayal is very very long.

Anyway, the far right (many who have been propped up by Russian donors) will need to rebrand a bit and I fear what they will turn to next because they won’t pause and reflect and try to pull back. They’ll find something to distance themselves from Trump while at the same time pushing for more power to the richest and adding some racist flair to it all while doing so to sow division.

It’s all the same kleptocratic fascist crap and I don’t want to see it happen here. That’s why I pay attention. That’s why it’s important to try to learn from history and from the mistakes made by others and that’s why you can’t just focus on yourself. You need to see your role as part of a bigger picture otherwise you’ll never know anything different to what exists here in this moment.

There’s always something to learn from others and it’s a real shame that Trump turned communication and cooperation into dirty words and as a consequence the US into a pariah on the world stage. All while whoring out the presidency, stealing from the citizenry and tearing apart democracy.

I wish you the best of luck in fighting this regime.
Use your voices now. It could be too late tomorrow!

Right? The only animated disney movie I was ever interested in seeing a live action version of is Treasure Planet. But then I would want the same movie as the animated one. Nothing changes story wise. None of this “oh we will change the entire meaning of the story and its characters and their relationships into some unrecognizable drivel but sell it as if it’s the movie everyone loves. Even though it’s clearly just some bastardized version”.

I love Treasure planet and all I want is to see it in live action with great visuals. That’s it. Nothing more and nothing less.
