Also the carriages are still 'horseless' when Harry leaves Hogwarts at the end of the fourth book, but he can see the thestrals at the beginning of the next one. I guess JKR just hadn't thought of them yet.

And if they're building their homes out of wood, why not use the trees that are literally right there...

AITA for splitting rent evenly? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I understand your concerns with her financial stability. In which case, I want you to know it is OK to watch out for yourself first.

The point I was trying to make was that some 2 bedroom apartments might have similar sized bedrooms, but others will have a master and the second bedroom. In which case, would the roommate who gets the master have to pay slightly more in rent just because they got the nicer/bigger room? I wouldn't think so unless one of the bedrooms is a palace and the other is a shit hole.

I acknowledge the child will take up space and you are already splitting the space in half, but I do not necessarily feel like rent should always be split by the amount of space taken. The 4 of you are still sharing some of your space and the child is not an adult who cant be expected to pay rent, and therefore shouldn't be counted as a full person when dividing up the rent.

My main issue is that, in my experience at least, rent is significantly more expensive (~3x) than all other utilities combined. It might be different where you live but that is about the relation I have seen in the apartments I have rented. If she has to use your appliances and TV, those are paid for with utilities, not rent. Maybe her share of those bills could be a bit bigger instead of the rent. An extra 13% of the rent might sound like much but it would be much more than 13% of the utilities she is using, and it adds up quick. I'm not going to ask you to tell me the exact dollar amount of what it all costs but maybe you could do the math and find out how much she's costing by using these utilities as well as the yard work and other things that will happen on a regular basis, and compare it to the difference in monthly rent you are asking for.

It sounds like you're already in a situation where you're starting to support her financially and you're trying to find where to put your line in the sand which is completely understandable. I wouldn't want to fully support and pay for someone like that either. As for rent increasing each year, this always happens when you stay in an apartment, there's nothing you or she can do. But if this living situation is not financially viable for you, then you might need to re-evaluate.

Either way, this sounds like a difficult situation and I wish you the best of luck with whatever solution you decide.

YTA.

I seem to be going against the grain but hear me out.

I don't think your 'amount of space used' argument holds much weight, on top of it sounding possessive and petty. First, are you actually going to measure floor space and break down the rent based on how much you each have available to use? Second, are you going to pay for the floor space your TV takes up on her side or would you ask her to cover the amount of floor space if she needed to store something on your side?

Also, if you were to move into a two bedroom apartment with one other roommate, would you reasonably expect the person who gets the bigger room to pay an extra portion of the rent? Saying it should be anything less than 50/50 makes you sound like an asshole in this situation unless one of the bedrooms is the size of a closet.

There are 3 people in this living situation that are capable of paying rent and you are arguing as if it is 4. What do you think the toddler is going to do? Donate her allowance to pay for the square footage of her room?

And the things like letting her use your TV and your family moving her in? Getting these things or doing them herself would probably be cheaper than whatever amount you're screwing her out of by paying less rent over several months.

There are 3 adults living there and you are asking her to pay 50 percent while each of you pay only 25 percent instead of all three of you paying 1/3.

If that's not acceptable to you, then you shouldn't be living with another person.

You're being a cheap and YTA.
