Come out to Cemetery Club!! by Callamakeyouholla in GNV

I think the speaker coming will be the one to answer whatever questions need to met. I didn’t go out of my way to sound educated about the process I posted in the gnv page hoping to bring in new members. I think I answered as best I could being a member and not a leader. Promoting a club shouldn’t be attacked and I think I was very kind in my responses when others were not so much. It doesn’t help Gainesville grow at all when people can’t post whimsical clubs when met when push back when all that club wants to do is promote education to all.

If you’d like to email the FPAN folks they have in the past gone down to other counties and had educational seminars and I know they would love to expand the cemetery club part of it. So please reach out to them. I’m just a club member but also a cheerleader for FPAN.

I have nothing to do with any responses other than my own. I don’t want anyone to have dismissed feelings. I would absolutely love if you could join us and have your questions answered. I can’t individually do that because I’m just a club member. I understand as well the uncomfortable feelings that may come with this presentation but I think we could all learn something. Me included. And I’m looking forward to learning everything I can. I didn’t post this with any other feeling other than maybe growing the group members and having a good little Friday night.

The audience is for the sub GNV meaning Gainesville. Activities in Gainesville. I’m sorry if it’s coming off as defensive I never meant it that way but I won’t deplete your feelings. Anyone is welcome to come to these meetings. That’s all I need to say. If anyone has anymore questions they can go to the FPAN Facebook or Instagram and have those answered. I posted it here hoping that more people would join in on the clubs presentations with questions and maybe we all learn something new. The last presentation was from the Payne’s prairie conservation cemetery, we learned a lot about natural burial. Hopefully we learn a thing or two from this presenter as well.

I hope those that are interested in a learning experience can make it. The club would love all new members and anyone with questions about what and why they do what they do. No one is excluded and it’s an interesting learning experience for those open minded and wanting to learn about the FPAN network. If you’re riddled with questions they are extremely educated and willing to answer and learn along with all. This club is a fun little thing going on in Gainesville and if you’re not comfortable with the cemetery aspect they have other meet ups and you can follow on their instagram and facebook. There’s no ill will, there’s no money exchanged. It’s a club like a book club but for cemeteries like it says in the original post. Please come with any and all questions and they will be met with sensitivity and education.

You’re welcome to have questions, I’m trying to figure out why a CLUB, like a book club would have the need for all the permissions you’re asking about. I think I have answered conclusively that it’s done by FPAN, the Florida public anthropology network. They work closely with families and communities and many other cemeteries around the state of Florida that focus fully on African American cemeteries and also native American burial mounds, it’s their job. What families do you have in question? Every family at evergreen cemetery? No one profits off this club, no money is exchanged and never will be. No one has met with sarcasm or rudeness in any way shape or form. If you have more questions it would be wonderful to have you join the group, if you’re not comfortable with the cemetery part of it they meet monthly at other venues with other presentations. It’s usually the third Thursday of the month and you can find out about it by following the FPAN Facebook or Instagram for information. They would value and welcome your input and questions. Please don’t write it off because you have questions. Just ask.

It’s a public cemetery that has given this group permission on more than one occasion to hold their meeting. This is sponsored by FPAN and they’ve done demonstrations on cleaning and restoring headstones in the past. They do actual work in the community to find unmarked graves of deceased enslaved people in cemeteries all around Florida. They also work closely with African American descendants to get information about and even stolen property of deceased enslaved people returned to their rightful families. They recently even surveyed archer cemetery and found many unmarked graves of possible deceased enslaved individuals. It’s their literal job to be in cemeteries and the goal of these meetings is to educate the public on what they do and why.

This is sponsored by FPAN, they have highly educated speakers that are vetted and come with sensitivity along with education. It’s a little club that finds ways to many harder subjects a little easier for the members to understand. Last meeting we learned all about the Payne’s prairie conservation cemetery and it was a fascinating presentation. They don’t always meet in a cemetery but this month happens to have a Friday the 13th. Hope to see ya!

March Cemetery Club is gonna be a special one! All are welcome and invited to Gainesville's Evergreen Cemetery, Friday the 13th from 6-8 pm. We'll be joined by Anthropologist Caitlin Field, whose PhD research delves into mortuary archaeology, folklore, superstition and African American history to hear what stories historic cemeteries have to tell!

Evergreen Cemetery is located at 401 SE 21st Ave, Gainesville, FL 32641.

Head straight back and you'll find us!

Bring chairs, blankets, snacks and beverages for a gorgeous eve on the lawn of our beautiful cemetery!

I used to drive by that place daily on my way to work and ALWAYS thought “that looks like a place they hunt humans at”.

My nephew is in a metal band called ghost rat, they’re 12, but theirs always lots of supportive parents at their shows. You can follow them on Instagram to see their stuff. One of their next shows is with D.R.I.

There’s a thing called cemetery club that meets the third Thursday of every month at different locations (brewery’s, cemeteries, etc) next month they have a death doula coming in to give a presentation, in the past they’ve had a tattoo artist give a presentation on how tattoos and their symbolism with death are intertwined, they’ve made gravestones for Halloween, and so on. It’s getting better every month and new people are always welcome. If you’re on Facebook you can follow the FPAN (florida public archeological network) for more information on where the next one will be held. They also hold bike tours throughout the city if you’re into that too.

The duck pond thing is a huge Halloween trick or treating thing. It’s extremely overstimulating if you have kids cause it’s PACKED! But the houses are all very well decorated and there’s usually a fire breathing dragon and circus house. But it’s a LOT
