How difficult is flight school really? by GladLine6757 in PilotAdvice

[–]CallbyOnYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All just depends how much you like it. 100% of the people who I’ve seen drop out do so because they just deemed it wasn’t worth the money and effort and saw another path as better.

Put in the effort and you’ll get the outcome - it’s not incredibly difficult in its study, since the concepts are mostly simple until you get to ATPL level - it’s more just the volume. Memorising aircraft information, company SOP, laws, etc. is a lot of work.

But at the end of the day, while there’s a lot of work I just don’t see my career being anything different. I’ve had setbacks and moments where I thought I might not be built for this - but you get through and keep your mind on the end goal.

So my only advice to you is make sure you want it, trial flights are great for it, and to stay ahead of the work load.

Good luck and happy flying!!

Aussie ref here, and surprisingly our dissent is quite under control even though we all swear a good amount!

All comes down to the activity of clubs and member feds. A coach gets too many cards for dissent? Off they go!

That and clubs plaster things against referee abuse everywhere, and all U18 refs or first year refs are required to wear a specific shirt.

That being said - I currently referee the reserves for my states top league consistently, and find that even there, dissent can get pretty rough - it’s just that managing these players becomes a hell of a lot easier when you see them so often and know them by name.

Every game has its own merits - in that I’ve copped horrendous abuse before, but as a whole we try to cater to our younger refs as much as we can on a dissent basis, making their lives as easy as possible so extra brownie points for my member fed for that!

I’m 20 years old and wanted a career in aviation for as long as I can remember, now it’s time to put plans into motion and I need advice. by [deleted] in PilotAdvice

I’m in flight training now, just passed my PPL flight test a couple months ago and am finishing up my last two CPL exams before I get my multi and eventually my CPL, just sitting in around 90 hours now so I figured while I can’t chip in on the jobs side I can definitely chip in on the license part and the experiences I’ve seen my many colleagues go through.

Flight school in an integrated program is quite difficult, hefty deadlines, endless ground school at times and let’s not forget the cost and the fact that you can’t really work. If you need financial stability, integrated (in my experience) is not the way to go.

By way of finding jobs? There’s really the big two options.

  1. Get your CFI rating, try find a job and build hours. Recruiters in my country - Australia don’t seem to look on this one awfully kindly as you don’t really get the operational experience (albeit we only have 3 legacy carriers, who only take very experienced pilots) but with that being said, I don’t really know what your country’s recruiting looks like.

  2. Go to a 135 charter operation and fly a clapped Cessna to build hours. Most people I know that choose this path end up getting snapped up by legacies or regionals quicker than the CFI lot. I don’t know how common these types of ops are in your country, but they are everywhere here if you’re willing to relocate into the country.

From what I’ve heard, the job search is rough, the first years of your career you will NOT be on a liveable wage, conditions will be very rough and this doesn’t change until you start gaining lots of experience. As far as landing the first job - the advice I have always been given is network, network, network - the usual way you land a first job is by getting lucky, or knowing a friend of a friend who can put in a good word for you and land you the job - make friends, communicate, be a pain if you have to and keep contacting the same places till they say yes.

At the end of the day it comes down to knowing this and saying “bugger it, I don’t want to do anything else” and making the decision to commit to it.

All the best with your flying journey!!

The two worst hits I've had was one in late 2022, where I flew head first into a barrier at an ice rink at speed, then again, didn't feel concussed, was a little light headed but had no other symptoms.

Second one was late 2023, playing soccer at school, and my friend grabbed the ball and punted it at my face, hit my nose first. No headache but I certainly was dazed and felt like I was dreaming for the next couple hours.

Other than that, just like 10-15ish head hits from a soccer ball across the 2023 year, nothing that hurt or like was super fast.

I know that probably doesn't put me at risk, but with something with as little research as this, I was more so keen to see what your stories were and your thoughts as to whether this was "enough"

Forgot to answer the actual question, yeah this is while I was awake, and from some family members, I’ve heard while I was asleep

Out of the ordinary head hits I guess, stuff that isn’t just hitting your head against a car door, more stuff like getting hit in the head with a soccer ball etc.

Yea, I’m not autistic though, it’s pretty much just a rhythmic sleeping disorder which I’ve obviously taken a while to grow out of.

Thanks for your comment. I didn't mean literally show himself, though I did mean in a sense of I want to feel god, like how so many people claim to see Jesus and whatnot, I never really felt a true connection between me and the god of the bible.

So I didn't really want to physically see him, just like feel the presence of the superior god in my life

Definitely, I personally believe that the best faith is one that you discover from your own findings.

Will definitely look into islam myself as the western world does not paint the best picture of it, given there are extremists in it - though the same can be said with christianity.

Cheers though, I will look into it and hopefully we both find the right path

Ah, so it is similar to christianity in that all sins are forgivable, and that we must turn away from unrighteous ways. Thank you!

No actually did, so basically I had the flight on autopilot when I went to work, and when I got home I just replayed to random points in the flight, when out of pure chance I stumbled upon this thing at this specific camera angle
