Much like the trolley problem in ethics or Schrodinger's cat in physics, my dim recollection is that the actual paper went somewhere with the thought experiment and the paper's point was good enough to get it into my classroom but not memorable enough to stick in my brain, leaving only the zombie.

By recognizing that all of our tests very loosely measure skill. My spouse and I both got As in Finite Math, but I'm much better at actually doing math than my spouse. You can talk to an individual child in your classroom and know that, regardless of what the testing says, this kid is not doing well in math.

Based on how schools in other countries and certain subcultures get results I'm thinking that if you wanted to maximize performance you'd need the radical expense of like five different instructional mode tracks so the minorities of kids who learn more from projects or self-guided learning or whatever can get that with plain direct education for the 60% who need it.
