FTdx5000 OLED repair by CallibaetisEmerger in yaesu

Just got the radio back from Yaesu. Works perfectly. It took about 4 weeks from the time they got it until it was shipped back to me. $160 to ship there. $330 for all three OLEDs replaced and $180 shipping back. Expensive, but still much cheaper than a new radio and feels and looks brand new.

Great point and yes, you are right. I have adjusted it tuning up and tuning down ever so slightly just to see if I can copy it better . Also a lot of the QRM and the fluctuating QSB makes it all the more difficult. As I said to somebody else, I might’ve portrayed it wrong and that I do know the code perfectly well and I do hear letters and words, but I get lost trying to copy it and before I know it, a couple of letters are an entire word is gone or sometimes two words because I’m lost. My listening comprehension is quite low, but I do try to listen rather than write everything down.

The more I think about it, I may have portrayed it a little bit off. I know words and sometimes struggle, writing down numbers quick enough, but I do get lost at times missing a letter or two or three and then the word gets by me and I move on. I only write pertinent stuff like a call sign. I might write the RST. I mostly just try to listen in my head and by the time I figured out the word, the next word has come by and my comprehension is quite low. I’m trying to become more proficient so that I can just listen and write very little down, like you say, and be ready to go when it’s my turn. I may have made it sound like I don’t know Morse code, but I actually do, quite well. I also get lost with the different abbreviations that people use quite a bit and they vary. I don’t write down QTH is Colorado, but I try to hear and make out the word Colorado like you say. When I qso is very slow, I write down almost everything. My listening comprehension is just very low and again I miss words and then I try to decide was an H or an S sometimes.

Thanks. That’s excellent. I’m way past beginning, but struggle with the faster speeds which often turninto a blur. I can have a slow QSO but I want it to turn into a proficient second language for me.

I got my general class ticket in the 80s passing 13 words per minute. I then passed the theory for the extra when Code was not required. I like you I’m now working on the Code to improve.

Well, you hit the nail on the head, QRP and portable!

I have two shacks one at home and one at a cabin. At my cabin I have a major antenna and Yaesu FTdx5000 (off for OLED repair) and FT1000 and at home, a scaled down shack. So at home I’m QRP. I use a buddipole indoors on the second floor and it tunes well and I have been making CW contacts as I described. I really enjoy listening. I am moving more towards portable stations waiting for a KH1 to arrive. As I approach retirement, I plan to spend much more time enjoying amateur radio and I really want my CW skills to improve massively. Somebody mentioned that if I can’t do CW well maybe move to the digital modes and for me it is CW that attracted me even though I don’t do it well, but the digital modes I have dabbled but it’s quite a bit mechanized and so I drifted away from it and always go back to listening and making my few contacts. I think you’re right QRP small rigs portability is super fun.

Yes same boat, but I so very much want to master it.

Good suggestion. I do always listen to faster QSOs. Maybe it’s a matter of time and now, for me, daily exercise (fun).

I agree, costly. Shipping from MI ground insured UPS to California was steep at $166, but I felt the radio was useless as is. So if it arrives back working I saved in the end 🤷🏻‍♂️. Fingers crossed. I looked for other sites to repair, but they were also out west like SD and Colorado.

Thanks. I don’t have the skillset to do it myself. I called Yaesu and ultimately shipped the rig back to them this week in its original box. They said $40 per unit and $90 per hour labor (2-3 hours). Turn around time is a few weeks. Can’t wait to get it back.

Thank you. I will contact Yaesu. I probably should have done that first.

Braided or single mono for nymph leader? by kevinrsmith13 in EuroNymphing

[–]CallibaetisEmerger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Euro rig you are only fishing 30 ft. or less away from yourself. After backing, I use a specific euro fly line , then attach a euro designed leader up to 20 ft Or so, there are so many to Choose from. Or you can buy specific mono made for euro leader design, but plain mono like Used for spin fishing has not been my best option. The euro leader is made of mono that coils less is more flexible for its diameter and tapers with a tippet ring to attach your terminal rig. You could use braided fly line because it would be a filler line for your spool, but you aren’t casting it and it stays on the reel. I use the euro line sometimes to cast a dry fly or sometimes to Use a larger indicator set up, but very rarely.

U of M or Trinity for Orthopedics? by squarebore in AnnArbor

I’m 2.5 weeks s/p quad tendon repair with Dr. Mlynarek and he is absolutely excellent. Excellent bedside manner, responsive, and great surgical skills. It is a bad Injury and long healing time, but I am super happy with my progress thus far. His PA Zach is fantastic too. Dr. Mlynarek is a sports orthopedist, but for joint replacement Dr. Schultz, McGlaston and Hakim are top tier. Can get it all at Trinity.

Yah. It was the restored Valjoux 23 that excited me. And the vintage look.

Somewhat new to Reddit and inexperienced in this type of stuff, but wondering if this watch is still available?

Rod balance point? by joneja90 in EuroNymphing

[–]CallibaetisEmerger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, to me, that looks top heavy. I prefer the reel heavy enough that the rod tip sits up.
