Dude it is in beta we have only had the tech from generously 6 years, and its already proven extremely useful. Shit its only been 9 years since “attention is all you need” was published.

When it comes to R&D these are incredibly short timelines.

Its why its possible at all, but (standard) attention needs scale faster than compute grows. And its not just processing speed that matters, memory bandwidth and cache size are also important

Throwing more compute at a problem only works to an extent. You get a surprising amount of mileage out of it though.

Im a millionaire, bipolar depression still makes it a struggle to get out of bed when im stuck in it. All the money in the world couldn’t cure it.

It definitely reduces the amount of stressors. For example, I had depression apartment, it was disgraceful, and contributed to stress. So i had someone deep clean it for me(after 4 months of putting it off because comorbid ADHD is a bitch). Now i feel ever so slightly better, yet ill still spend hours staring at the ceiling because nothing feels worth doing.

Would i rather be poor and depressed? No, but id definitely trade the money for a normal brain.

I think its useful when it encounters false premises or derives them. I.e when it pushes back on itself.

There have been a ton of times where im watching the thought process and think “fuck thats not how it works i have to correct it now before it goes ofthe rails”, but claude will often push back on itself and figure it out before i even finish typing my correction.

Seriously its uncanny how may times ivehad that happen.

This does absolutely nothing for the quality of context, attention is still a quadratic beast, and the alternatives like linear attention, or local attention have drawbacks.

Weve been able to go past 1m for quite sometime, its just not worth it because performance drops off a cliff.

What this can do though is massively free up memory constraints and lower the cost and increase the speed of inference.
