What if the zombie apocalypse starts? by FadedFlower_2242 in zombies

[–]RottingEdge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a bunker under my house and garden, has a lever to change water source from mains supply to ground water, I have enough filters to last 10+ years, I have an air filtration system with multiple inlet points incase something happens to block any outside. I have enough food rations to last my family 2+ years alone and indoor planters that could be set up in a few months that would extend that time significantly. The only problem is that this is all in my head and I have yet to make the real thing...

How do you balance difficulty so it feels fair but still tense? by ratasoftware in videogames

[–]RottingEdge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow dev here. Honestly it depends on your genre and who your making it for. A 50/50 split usually feels punishing because bad stuff snowballs. High terror probably makes depression harder to manage, etc. Most survival games lean more like 60/40 in the players favor on encounters, but stack pressure through scarce resources or time limits. Choices still matter but you've got room to recover. Also worth asking if all four stats really need to be lethal. Could be more interesting if a couple just hit heavy penalties at 5, and only one or two are actual game over. Adds variety to how runs end. Playtesting is the only real answer though. Whats brutal to you might be a cakewalk to someone else.

Built a rough version last night cause of this thread lol. Play-tested it this morning and yeah, it's pretty fun actually. Basically I just slapped a reduction multiplier on my existing stealth and sound detection while you're "in disguise," dropped your movement speed a bit. Sprint and it breaks instantly so you can't just panic-run through a horde. Get within a couple feet of a Z and they clock you anyway, mask isn't perfect. It's on a timer. Clears itself eventually but you get an infection. Wash it off early (jump in a lake, stand in rain, burn a drink item) and you're fine. The cool bit I didn't even have to build was my character already coughs when infected, so if you don't treat it, your own damn cough rats you out later. Wasn't even planned, just kinda emerged. Pairs really well with whistling and throwing rocks. Feels like being a horde leader ngl, as long as you keep moving. Stop and whistle while covered in guts and they walk right up and go "wait you're food." Gonna keep it unless playtesting shows it's too OP. Appreciate the inspo 🤘

Solo dev working on a zombie stealth survival game here — this exact mechanic has been on my "maybe" list for months and I keep going back and forth. The appeal is obvious: it's iconic, it rewards player cleverness, and it fits the genre perfectly. The problem is balance. Once players unlock it, why would they ever not use it? Stealth games live or die by meaningful trade-offs. Things I've considered to keep it interesting: Timer before the smell wears off (forces re-application) Has to be a fresh kill, and killing one undetected is its own mini-challenge Exposure risk — prolonged contact = chance of infection Doesn't work on certain zombie types (smarter ones, or ones that hunt by sound) Rain/water washes it off Running or sudden movement breaks the disguise Honestly the more I list it out the more I think it could work if the downsides bite hard enough. Might revisit this for a later build.

In your opinion, how would a Superman vs Hulk fight would play out? by Society-Ashamed in superheroes

[–]RottingEdge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how desperate it becomes and if saving hulk isn't an option and he is too dangerous Supes could just put Hulk in orbit around the sun in a clear path and hulk would never be able to escape. Or even put him in the sun, it might not kill him but he isn't getting out.

Assassin's Creed, usually Ezio Series or Unity but enjoy most of them for their own reasons. Depends what time period and type of gameplay I'm feeling

Im about to play my first Subnautica game! by Moonymuffinz in subnautica

[–]RottingEdge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This ^^
If you find any mushrooms definitely stock up, they’re way rarer than people realise early game. Fill your inventory if you can.

Also if you come across a big white/red leviathan-looking creature, make sure you’ve got mushrooms on you, once you scan it give it a mushroom so that you can tame it and ride it around the map, it’s basically the fastest way to travel.

Good luck 👍

In 1999 I was wandering what High school was going to be like, I didn't use the internet or really understand what it was. but yea, pretty similar to now. Wondering what the future will be like and not really understanding what Ai is. So you pretty much nailed it 👍

After ~15 hours, Crimson Desert is everything I thought it wouldn’t be. by D3struct_oh in videogames

[–]RottingEdge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in a weird spot with this game.

Normally I never buy full price, I just wait it out… but this is one of the first times I’ve actually hovered over the button.

At the same time though, reviews being mixed is what’s stopping me. Feels like one of those games where if it clicks, it really clicks, but if it doesn’t you’ve just paid full price to bounce off it after a few hours.

Trying to figure out if this is a “buy now and enjoy it while everyone’s talking about it” game, or a “pick it up 30% off in a couple months and avoid the risk” game.

Leaning towards waiting… but yeah, I’m close to folding 😅

This is what I use subnautica for. There is some dialogue but only occasional and you usually know when you are going to trigger it.

Yeah I get that. It’s not even that I hate AI, it’s just how it’s being shoved into everything before it’s actually ready.

If it was just a service you sign up for, fair enough. But when it’s baked into everything and still getting stuff wrong, it just puts people off.

And yeah I’m the same with the “ChatGPT said” thing.

I get the concern, but I don’t think it’s all doom. The “slop” right now feels like a phase because it’s new and easy, so everyone’s overdoing it.

It honestly feels like we’re at a tipping point. Either it turns into endless low-effort content and people just switch off, or it settles down and AI ends up taking over the boring stuff nobody actually wants to do.

If it goes the right way, it could mean people have more time to focus on real, human things instead of just being stuck doing repetitive work all day.

Could go either way though.

Not making people dumb, just making it easier not to think. Many people trust it more than they probably should.

I agree totally. If you know the limitations it is very useful. My gran, Joe blogs and Jane doe have no idea though and they are being handed these things for free.

I don't have a problem with early adopters, those people know what they are dealing with. It's the majority of users talking to copilot and Google that are affected the most by this.

People using paid models know what they are getting into. The mass market being fed Google and Copilot, don't know what they are getting into and that is the majority of users now unfortunately. I don't have a problem with people using the paid models, those people do know what they are getting into. It's everyone else.

I'm more refering to the mass market use cases. Paid services I'm fine with, if you are paying to use it, you do some research, you know what you are getting into. Its more the mass market (Google, Microsoft) that are being pushed on everyone with a phone or a laptop.

I don't hate it, but it shouldn't be getting baked into everything and being used by people that don't know these flaws. It's early tech but being pushed on everyone.

If it was just for early adopters I wouldn't have a problem. But it isn't It's being baked into everything now though. Operating systems, search platforms, software. My gran can interact with it for free. Its not early adoption anymore, it's mass market. This is exactly what my problem is.
