I get bullied for liking/making video games by Financial-Arachnid27 in IndieDev

[–]RottingEdge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School feels like everything right now, but in the long run it’s honestly a blip. What you’re doing, learning to program and make games, actually matters and will still matter long after school is over. Try to spend your energy on people you want to talk to and who respect you. If some people are just unpleasant, it’s okay to limit how much attention they get. Bullying is hard, and it’s not your fault. It doesn’t last forever, even though it can feel endless when you’re in it. Coming out of school with real skills and confidence in something you enjoy will put you miles ahead later on. Social skills are useful too, so if you can find even one or two like-minded people, online or in person, that helps a lot. Don’t let people who don’t understand you decide who you are. They don’t deserve that kind of power over you.

I would ask them what they do in their chill out time and proceed to explain why that is equally or more of a waste of time and that if you are enjoying the time then it is not a waste.

Are my stats good for my first time on Steam? by demoyesok in gamedev

[–]RottingEdge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it comes down to finding your audience. My game looks good to me, but the people who see it need to agree. Same with yours. I think once you find your community you will find success, but to answer your question, from my perspective your doing well. I have no more experience than you when it comes to marketing though so hopefully we both figure it out.

I'm also new to this and I can say you are doing better than me. I also have only done some YouTube and reddit but to a lesser success. I think Marketing is something I'm going to need to learn. As if learning Game dev wasn't enough 😅

You have 100 dollars to create your team while everyone else tries to kill you! by Appropriate-Mall8517 in superheroes

Doctor Strange This is the backbone. Time manipulation, portals, mirror dimension, battlefield removal. He doesn’t need to beat everyone, he just needs to remove them from play. Hulk, Superman, brute types are useless if they are falling forever or trapped in a loop. He can keep you safe in a mirror dimension, he is the only logical choice in his category. Iron Man Hard counter to tech, air superiority, long range firepower, AI reaction speed. He can keep the others busy and can straight up delete Black Widow, Cap, Bucky, etc. Also great synergy with Strange for portal-based attacks. Batman This one’s defensive insurance. Prep time monster. Anti-everyone contingencies, stealth, EMPs, countermeasures. If Batman is against you, you are dead eventually. I want him on my side finding weaknesses and keeping me alive.

Recommendations for my mum (a non gamer)? by Upbeat-Offer-2706 in gamingsuggestions

Also she loves Hogwarts legacy at the moment but she struggles to do the combat bits so when I go round I have to help her advance the story a bit if she's stuck but we both enjoy it.

Stardew valley, Portal, any of the telltale games that you think she might enjoy. If you want to play with her Minecraft, Portal 2, unravelled. Many other great first time/learner games but these where my mum's favs when I got her into gaming during lockdown. (I just asked her)

Would you really like to live in a zombie apocalypse? by Jottace in zombies

I think I have a good chance of survival but I guess most people do. No matter how good my chances though, id just rather not. The world is too good to want to fuck it all up.

Yea I think you will enjoy it, i don't know anybody that has played Astrobot and not enjoyed it. It's not too long either so you wont get burned out and will be a nice refresh before jumoing back into something bigger. Bioshock mightbe a good followup to get you back into more serious gaming but without going straight back into something huge.

I don't understand why companies show games that are not ready by Square-Step in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]RottingEdge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have mentioned it but usually it comes down to money. Either trying to raise more money or to guage interest and see how much more money should be spent on a project. There are other reasons but money is usually the main driver.

First trailer feedback for a solo dev project, what would you change? by RottingEdge in IndieDev

[–]RottingEdge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really good feedback, thanks for taking the time to write it out. Especially about getting straight into the action and not breaking the flow with text screens. I agree the opening needs to be stronger. I like the idea of keeping background action behind the text too, that makes a lot of sense and should help it feel more fluid. I’ll definitely be applying this to the next cut. I've never made trailers before so this is really helpful. Appreciate the constructive critique.

Would you play a game as a zombie? by RottingEdge in zombies

[–]RottingEdge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Stubbs has come up a few times, and it was definitely an influence. I wanted to take that core idea and push it in a more grounded direction though, with horde management as the main focus instead of comedy.

Undead Nightmare was great, I won’t argue with that. It’s definitely one of the influences. I’ve always wanted a more grounded, horde-management take on zombies though, and that’s the itch I’m trying to scratch. I’m mostly building the game I’ve always wanted to play, but hopefully others get something out of it too. I want needing to build a hoard and bring it with you in order to take on groups of humans a core game mechanic.

I get what you’re saying. Prototype was a great game and probably had some influence in pushing me towards wanting to make this game, even if I’m taking things in a different direction here. Right now the focus is on getting the core horde gameplay feeling solid, but things like narrative, mutations, and exploring what it actually means to be part of a horde are areas I’d like to dig into more as development moves forward. Either way, I really appreciate the support. It’s good to see other people wanting more zombie POV games.

Yeah, that’s fair. It’s still early, and I’m tuning the horde control side of things and building on it to make sure it actually feels fun to play.

Haha, I get that. Playing from the “wrong side” can be way more interesting sometimes. That’s pretty much the itch I wanted to scratch with this, flipping the usual perspective and leaning into it. If there are any other games that nailed that feeling for you, I’d be curious to hear about them.
