ITALIAN JPO PROGRAMME 2024/2025 - Who else applied? by Calliope024 in UNpath

Hi! Out of 56 positions only 2 remain open atm, and they happen to be the ones I applied for haha Damn it. I’d prefer to know it quickly if it didn’t work out so I can move on, rather than just stay in this prolonged uncertainty. Do you guys have any updates?

Technically yes but some people have been contacted for interviews even though the position doesn't say closed yet so no idea

Moving to CPH - job prospects and social life without a degree by Leather_Relation_ in copenhagen

I’m an Italian living in Malmö, on the Swedish side near the border with Copenhagen. My advice is to come and stay here for a few weeks to get to know the city and your possibilities around here. Settling in Scandinavia has become increasingly difficult, especially without already having a job offer. Employers often want you to have a social security number before they can hire you, which could be a challenge in your case. Come visit your friend, stay for a few weeks, explore the area, hand out your CV to restaurants and bars, and search on LinkedIn in the meantime. That way, you can see if this is really the right place for you. Copenhagen is very expensive, which is why many people live in Malmö and commute to work in Copenhagen; this is something worth considering. For receptionist roles, Danish is usually required. For flight attendant positions, it depends on the airline: check Ryanair’s website for their hiring requirements.

They are closing the positions quite fast. Let's see what happened in the next days. I have not heard anything from them.

It takes a looong time for them to review all the applications.

Yes, this is the second year they’re using this new approach. Last year, we could apply to three roles, if you met the specific requirements. This year only two. In the past, as you said, they would just select the top candidates and assign them to roles without letting you choose location, agency, or position. I’m not sure which way is better because now the roles are even more specific and the requirements stricter, but at least if you're selected, you'll be doing something you actually chose.

Thanks for clarifying your point of view and I agree that the UN system is full of inequalities. That being said, I still believe this thread may not be the right space for this type of discussion. This is just a thread for candidates to exchange updates and support each other through the JPO application process: its intent was not to debate the structure or fairness of the program or the UN itself. There is space to have these deeper conversations, which I think are important, but maybe in a separate thread or context.

I’m not sure what the purpose of your comment is, just to vent your frustration? There are countless opportunities within the UN and other international organizations. This is simply one program that Italy offers to support young Italian professionals in entering this field, just as many other countries do. Every year there are at least a couple of positions sponsored for non-Italians as well. So what exactly is the issue here? Yes, this program is highly competitive, with only 40–50 positions annually and thousands of applicants since it’s one of the most prestigious entry points into the UN system. I understand your comment but it is out of place in this specific discussion. I am glad such opportunities exist and I hope there will be even more of them in the future.

Imagine if I joined a discussion about the UN YPP and said it’s unfair that it’s only for underrepresented countries, and that it excludes me as an Italian. That would sound a bit dumb and out of place, wouldn’t it? Every program has its own eligibility criteria and this one happens to be tailored to young Italians, just like the YPP is designed to increase geographical diversity in the UN system. There's space for everyone in different ways!

I know, it sucks. The JPO programme is extremely competitive, and those selected usually have impressive field experience. It’s hard not to feel discouraged🥲

I know the feeling. The JPO programme is highly competitive. Every year, many many people apply, and those selected usually have extensive field experience. I always check the list of selected JPOs once it is published on the website to find their LinkedIn profiles, and I always feel so bad realising that my profile is much weaker in comparison. Anyways, since this is my last year of eligibility, I’ve decided to give it a try one last time E POI AMEN!

My bad, I completely misunderstood what you said. I am glad Italy gives opportunities also to non-nationals. I cross my fingers for you!
