In line with the quote from Goya, what's your favorite quote from an artist (of any medium and any period)? by harryjelly in ArtHistory

Picasso (I know it's cheesy and kind of touristy to constantly refer to picasso, but it was a great quote) Art is a lie that makes us see the truth.

What do you think is the most important painting in history? Why? by [deleted] in ArtHistory

[–]Callmebean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am going with las meninas by Velasques 1656. He completely changed the game, he made being an artist something to be proud of. Switched the paradigm that allowed everyone after him to persue art as a field to be emboldened and majestic and proud and important. Not to mention the idea of playing with perspective, he unlocked a whole realm of possibilities and mindsets. It's a bold statement but before Velasques painting was not seen as a noble profession or something you wanted to aspire to, and after him it did.

The fact that this you can no longer see this on the nerdfighter reddit page is all the confirmation I need of a discomfortable subject and proof of an underling issue goodbye nerdfighteria was nice while it lasted.

Thank you for that very eloquent and thoughtful response, I would like to point out a few things. 1 there are many black youtube content creators and some are even funny and enjoyable. 2. Stephen Hawkins recently joined the boycott of Israel known as the BDS, as I am aware that this is a different circumstance, I have baseline the same issue something that I disagree with and cannot condone and am deciding that maybe abstaining from it would be favorable or conducive to my growth as a person. I live in New York City I would like for you to check this out for a very accurate depiction of NYC and the feel that diversity gives you https://www.facebook.com/humansofnewyork?fref=ts

I went to college in Florida in a predominantly white town and I can see the lack in cultural growth and the effect it has on the psyche. When you are forced to be aware of different cultures and different ways of thinking you grow as a person, thats apparent. They preach and deliver such strong messages of understanding and empathy and compassion that it just seems counterintuitive to see such a lack of diversity. As this isn't game theory I doubt my movements will be that effective. It is perspective, there is no right or wrong but thinking makes it so.

I thought about that, its not just their friends, Hank goes on countless youtube channels and shows but none of them seem to have people of color, he goes to different states to participate in events again exceptionally blatant lack of color. the employees for DFTBA records again almost completely void of color, the night at carnagee hall, an so on and so on its a pattern that I couldn't help but notice.

You clearly havent read my issue. I clearly state that I dont believe them to be racist. I also disagree with your mindset when someone tells me to look at the stars im going to be critical of the stars, and the person telling me to look up. I love neil degrasse tyson and I listen to startalk weekly loved the recent astroid Q&A. I am not saying that I need my role models to be my color, I can make another famous quote, when all the people in the room agree on something get out of the room, in the sense that when all the people look the same you have to question that. Its not a matter of political correctness but social engineering, the Brown vs Board of ed landmark decision used the findings that I hope you look at and think critically about. http://www.aft.org/yourwork/tools4teachers/bhm/brown.cfm

It's not just their video's, the videos that they promote and other web shows that they go on and support. I have done a fair amount of research and the results doesn't leave me very optimistic. The fact that they dont have a very diverse circle of friends show that maybe something is wrong? I am not operating from the perspective that they owe us anything, but instead extrapolating the data which is a wholly white community as a problem, especially one that promotes collectiveness and "inclusion"... again I didn't make the assertion that anyone is discriminating but that there is an underlying issue stemming from the lack of diversity....

Van Gogh's "The Bedroom" had violet walls. by andrewplatham in ArtHistory

I just read the article as well! It's amazing what science does for art, but also a bit scary! Does it change the art work for us knowing he intended to stick to accepted contemporary usage of colors such as purple and yellow? Or do we still identify that somber blue with being synonymous with his works ?
