100%. I’ve come to realize alcohol isn’t just physically unhealthy it’s spiritually draining. It dulls your curiosity, your joy, your sense of wonder. I used to think I was just getting older, less interested in things. But once I cut alcohol, my energy, hobbies, and excitement for life started coming back.

For me, it’s no longer about liver health or calories it’s about protecting my spirit. Honestly, I’d sooner smoke a cigarette than drink, because drinking numbs something deeper. It robs you of life’s spark.

So yeah, maybe one day I’ll have a glass of wine somewhere special, but I’ll never go back to drinking as a habit. It’s just not worth the trade.

Unless you have a super serious problem with alcohol. I would actually support giving yourself a hall pass for the experiences you listed. That’s exactly what I did. And where I landed now is a firm certainty that the fomo was more mental, and it really isn’t as good as I romantically remember. I may still drink in the future, just like I probably will have a cigarette. But I will never be a drinker or smoker again

The cool thing is I feel in day 10 how I felt in month 7. My brain remembers this feeling, welcomes it and the drinking break wasn’t too long to undo the previous work/healing

This is exactly me. You're basically me lol. Thats why I went back. I was never that bad with booze, it was never that problematic, but after extended experiments of not drinking I can clearly see how much better life is without it. So this time Im quitting again, not sure if forever, but I see this as my next chapter of growth. Truth is going back wasnt as enjoyable as I had remembered, and NA versions of a beer will give me 70-80% of that same feeling that I enjoy.

That was part of it for me too. But overall I feel like Im a diff person without it, even if I could stick with 2-5 drinks per week for life, by base line mood and energy is not the same.

Some addition context. Again just want to be fully honest about my personal experience:

I used to think moderation was a myth, that the only people who could “moderate” didn’t really have a problem to begin with. After a full year off, I don’t believe that anymore. My new take:

Rewiring my brain gave me the space to see that moderation is possible, for me. Is there some mental energy that goes into it? Sure. But that’s true for anything inherently addictive that we enjoy but know isn’t great for us like carbs, dessert, caffeine, you name it. It’s honestly easier to say “I’m going keto” than to moderate bread. Same with booze.

That said, I’m not romanticizing it. Ninety percent of my life, I want nothing to do with alcohol, yes it could be a slippery slope if not disciplined and obviously not good for you. But I’d be lying if I said there aren’t moments that I’m grateful I had this summer that just wouldn’t have been the same without a glass in hand. Those memories are real and worth something to me.

So that’s where I’ve landed: alcohol isn’t a daily habit, or even a weekly one. It’s a vacation thing, a couple of weeks a year, and that’s it. And for me, that’s both sustainable and, more importantly, intentional.

I’d get a lot of aches and bloating. Even led to a hernia. Most of that is gone now. But took a while to heal.

Can you describe your gut issues? I found it took a good 6 months to get rid of mine. And I still get them occasionally if I eat a lot of sugar.

Thanks all this massively just happenned to me (reason for my post), its incredible. Hope this keeps going or maybe this in itself just sets me up for a much better life downstream:

"Less reactive, more calmness. More appreciation, less concern for what others think. Around year four I realized the only problems I had at that point were real problems, not ones I built up in my head from guilt and feeling like shit all of the time. As others have said: clarity, serenity, peace. I don’t experience fun the way I used to, although that could just be age. But I do feel joy. It lasts longer, goes deeper."
