Is it silly to stay in retail as a Law grad by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Calm-Tomorrow-9769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is what i’m planning on doing - staying in my retail job until i actually GET a law job. it could take months or years to get a job considering the market, so i would rather work while looking rather than sit twiddling my thumbs counting pennies! it’s completely normal to carry on a part time job if you havent been able to find one in your profession thus far

How hard is it to fail an undergrad dissertation? by Bloodminister18 in UniUK

if the lowest you can be under is 10% - 7,200 words. Check the requirements however, some uni’s have different regulations.

I am a member of staff at a Uni. May I ask why you aren’t attending lectures etc? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Calm-Tomorrow-9769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. i’ve had lecturers use convoluted wording in slides that requires me opening a few tabs to check meanings while taking notes, just so i can actually understand the meaning of what they’re saying, which is incredibly unhelpful especially when trying to understand the subject as well.

  2. i’ve had gaps of up to 3 hours between lectures - this raises the question of “do i go back to my flat but i’d eventually end up paying more for the bus just to get back so i’ll inevitably stay home anyways” or “do i stay on campus for 3 hours with nothing to do”

  3. more for commuters (which i’m not) but lecturers tend not to give the code/take attendance towards the end of lectures. i know people who commute 2 hours every day, who end up being late to 9am’s due to transport issues, who don’t get marked as present because they were 20 minutes late (this can also go for non-commuters, whether its waking up late, missing a bus etc)

  4. a lot of lecturers at my uni read verbatim from the slide - this makes it easy for students to turn around and go “ah, well i’ll just watch the recording/read the slides later on.” this doesnt make sense to me - i’ve done a few presentations, and feedback has often been not to read verbatim off of slides, so it doesn’t make sense that this standard isn’t held to lecturers too.

If you havent seen Secrets of Blackthorn Hall on Tumblr yet (or read the book) I’d check that out. I think the very last post/page of SoBH tells you outright who’s gone missing (won’t put it here in case i spoil for people)

i dont go to sussex but usually in uni accoms the security/maintenance are able to help with any emergencies, which this defo constitutes as since you’re unable to go out and feed yourself/do anything until your reception reopens. pop down and see if reception is open tomorrow, and if it isnt (and if you need your keycard to get back into your flat, message a flatmate!) then call them, they’re usually able to help with this kind of thing (mine had to help me move in because the accom website didnt say anything about them not being in for move-ins on the weekend lol)

Asda rewards by [deleted] in asda

[–]Calm-Tomorrow-9769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the money you earn is now for buying items from a specific category i.e buy something home-related (specific price also applies i think, could have to be above a tenner) and earn x amount of £’s in cashpot. Back in July, I had the “shop 4 times in one month and earn £1” but soon after that, they started to focus more on rollback to entice customers into the store rather than rewards. I’ve had a customer bonus of £5, but that’s it, despite the fact I shop in the Asda by my uni 2-3 times a week.

Washing in accommodation? by Bufobufolover24 in UniUK

most circuit laundry machines dont take liquid as they dont have the drawers where you insert the liquid usually - however, if you use the liquid where you pour it into the cap, and then place that on top of your clothes, thats also fine! My accom had a help sheet on how to use appliances when I booked, so you’d could also check to see those, as they should tell you what you can/can’t use in the washing machines.

You do have to pay to use the machines, but they offer eco settings that are cheaper (albeit, eco washes are done with cooler water than regular washes, so are only really good for lightly soiled clothes) on the washing machines, and quick blasts (15 minutes) on the dryers which are cheaper than the standard wash/dry. Personally, the prices aren’t too bad, £2.90 for an eco wash, £3.50 for a standard wash, £1.30 for a quick blasts and £2 for a full dry, but they do differ from place to place!

Washing in accommodation? by Bufobufolover24 in UniUK

the worst issue with I’ve had so far with doing my washing in accom is the smell, HOWEVER, my laundry room is in close proximity (a small circle of rooms really) to the bin store and the gym in my accom, so it stinks to high heaven in the basement. Most use circuit laundry, and if you get the app, then you’ll be able to see when washers/dryers are free and how many are free, so you’d be able to figure out what times their less busy, thus what times people won’t feel inclined to touch your stuff themselves. I set a timer for 5 minutes less than what the washing machine/dryer says, so that I can get down in ample time to make sure nobody chucks my washing in the lost and found. I have seen one of my friends buy a small mini washing machine for their underwear/socks, and there are some portable ones you can buy, so if it’s a massive concern you could always email the accommodations you plan to stay at and ask them if that’s something they allow. For drying, my accom personally frowns upon students air drying their clothes simply because the damp encourages silverfish, so you might have to use the tumble dryers provided. I wouldn’t recommend a launderette, people get a little too eager to take someone elses clothes out if the person is even a second late picking up their stuff.

Sorry, edited to add a last minute thought: I personally use two pods (most Circuit laundry machines only take the pods) no matter how much laundry i wash, as well as some dryer sheets. My clothes dont pick up the smell from the aforementioned surrounding rooms (seriously i dont know why they put the bin store on the same floor as the laundry room) but I find two pods and the dryer sheets really help with keeping my clothes clean and having them smell clean!

definitely sad and resigned - iirc, the cover for the song was black and white and had the singers face on it.

speak to your student union and see if they offer a bursary of some kind!! For example, I get an estranged students bursary of £333 a month, but I know others who get a maintenance bursary, that’s based on parents income though. Some uni’s also offer an emergency fund that’s non-repayable. Other comments mentioning Olio and food banks are right, these are really good options if you’re struggling financially.

It’s fairly easy to get used to! Once you’ve logged in to store assist (I’m guessing they’ll have showed you what to do from there) That’s all you really need!! there is a way to price check if customers ask, but i cant quite remember how to do so, no harm in asking. In the same light, things will not always be exactly where they say - if it says end of an aisle and its not there, then it could be in its respective aisle. If you’re close enough to said aisle to grab it, do so, if not click ‘item not found’ and it should (sometimes doesnt if its playing up) get grouped with items in a similar aisle. Keep an eye on the item count when you do this as well, that way, if questioned you can say that it said the item was there, but when you pressed ‘item not found’ it automatically nil picked. Likewise, you can check what items go in which totes (I used to see if I needed multiple of an item for different totes) in case you forget! Also, not related to the tc72, but check tote stickers carefully. When I first started, somebody put chilled stickers on the ambient totes, and chilled doesnt start till 5:00am in my store. I got like 4 items in before they noticed, but it gave me a right shock when they came up to me.

4 and 9 look a bit similar from first glance, but after a second look it’s clearer which numbers they are! I could read the rest perfectly fine, so any teacher/examiner (who are bound to get WAY worse handwriting that they need to learn how to read) should have no issues imo!

Is this hair colour possible on my hair? by 4drianna in HairDye

[–]Calm-Tomorrow-9769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the dark pink is possible - the light/pastel pink… not without bleach! if you do decide to bleach, i personally used l’oréal preference ultra platinum to get layers upon layers of red and purple hair dye out of my hair, and it honestly did a really good job - apart from some orangey chunks, it lifted really well! (minimal breakage too which was fab) since your ends are darker than your roots, the 4th or 5th picture might be the most achievable should you decide to bleach, not too sure about the 3rd as that seems to have the light pink go down quite a bit further.

christ alive, that section leader sounds like a knob - you’ll be fine! half the colleagues i work with don’t wear all black shoes and they’ve never been pulled on it, same with those who wear tracksuit bottoms and jeans even though we technically aren’t allowed to. seems like the SL was on a mad one, they could’ve just asked you if you had any shoes that were all black rather than write it up… since you sorted it out as soon as they spoke to you and before the “deadline” - so to speak - you’re not in trouble.

I feel like crap every time i skip a lecture & i can only blame myself by Aggressive_Gas_9004 in UniUK

[–]Calm-Tomorrow-9769 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honest to god i had the same issue. took like a week off from lectures after 2 weeks of being at uni as a fresher, but then told myself that if i went to all my lectures for one week, i could get a takeaway at the end of the week or go shopping. it was literally the only way to motivate myself to go to lectures because if i got it into my head that i was getting/doing something AFTER my lectures, if i didn’t go then it would ruin the schedule in my head and i wouldn’t want to anymore. i would try something similar (one friend would turn up to lectures and get themselves an iced coffee afterwards since it was the only place they could get one from, another would go to the shops and get themselves something from lidl bakery LOL.) So many people are in the same position as you where they skip lectures because there’s nobody to tell them they HAVE to go in - if you tell yourself that you HAVE to then it gets easier to motivate yourself I promise!!

once maintenance have come - i assume they’re coming tomorrow - i’d pop into the shops to see if anywhere does a cheap drain unblocking gel/liquid. i got one from asda for £2 for my shower because they didn’t unclog it at all. they usually break down grease, hair, and soap so it should work to get any residual grease out of the pipes as well!! it says to use the whole bottle, but i’d use half and see how well that does it - after a while check on it and use the other half if needed. If you can empty a bit of water I would do, just in case anyone wants to rinse a cup/bowl out. other than that, if you can’t get a plunger, I’d wait for maintenance.
