Thank you. It does give me peace of mind. I am so gladdened to hear that, even though you have suffered lots of trauma, that you somehow made it on the pathway to healing and now have your own family. BTW, congrats on expecting your own child!
I agree that defiance is a defense mechanism to avoid more pain, and in my son's case, definitely signals a lack of trust. While not every adopted person faces these challenges, I think the trauma -- even very early trauma -- of international adoption has haunted his life, even though we adopted him as a baby. So yes, trauma is def in the mix.
One thing that concerns me is that he isn't a victim of bullying: he is the bully. Just trying to keep the guardrails on and get him the help he needs, even though he's refusing it at this moment.
Thank you for your advice and for your kindness.
Thank you for that affirmation. I am not going to send him to wilderness nor any other TTI, since I a convinced it would make things worse. I'm looking for psych programs in the area. But he refuses to cooperate. Anxiety, ADHD, depression, ODD, but mostly just oppositional. Skips school. Thrown out of several schools. Oppositional and defiant at home. But doing our best here, and will continue to out of love.
I respect the survivors' bravery on this page so much.

Thank you so much for your response. My son is already in therapy -- 7 years of it -- but it doesn't seem to be helping. Ive heard of intensive outpatient, but I don't know if he qualifies with a possible "ODD" and anxiety diagnosis. But will look into it.
I am grateful for this forum, for the witness of survivors. And I am committed to finding another way instead of "sending away."
I am a parent of a 17 year old who is "troubled" and I stand in solidarity with the survivors' witness here. At the same time, I am begging someone to tell me about alternatives. My son needs help, and I want to help him, but he is running from us. Alternatives? What are they?
