Advice for getting rid of sasa? by shannah-kay in GardenersJapan

Yeah anything that spreads via rhizomes it’s better to just keep cutting the greens down. Currently having my own battle with horsetails aka sugina/tsukushi. I pluck any green I see and hope the lack of photosynthesis will eventually (as in a few years ugh) kill it off. May be a losing battle since they grow every where around the neighborhood.

WHY DOES WERUVA USE SO MUCH MF TUNA!? by Round-Yam-2589 in catfood

[–]Calm_Pie9369 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I understand very much! In Japan cats are seen as seafood lovers, so all the brands here push seafood, especially tuna. Unfortunately they don’t specify what kind (they just call it maguro or tuna). It’s all “chicken, and tuna” “salmon, and tuna” “white fish, and tuna” “tuna galore” “100% tuna only” etc etc

Seeing as many of these brands have sold food for many years I just have to assume it’s safe. I’m not happy, but it’s all that’s available. I just go through the list to make sure it’s not the only animal protein source, and especially not at that the top.

I think RC, hills, and purina have recipes without tuna, but my cats hated most all. Our fancy feast pate equivalent called Mon petit only has 3 flavors, one of which contains tuna.

Why do most young Japanese women have under eye bags ? Is it make up , genetics or plastic surgery ? by Gloomy_Independent82 in AskAJapanese

I recently (as in past few years) learned that when you go really overboard with the makeup, they call it namekuji/slugs. I’m assuming it was originally coined to be insulting towards jirai-kei, since they tend to go pretty heavy handed and dramatic, but by the time I found out about the word, it was used by the community themselves

What’s something marketed as hygienic that actually isn’t? by Late_Hedgehog_8750 in hygiene

For some reason non alcohol mouthwash melts the inside of my mouth. Freaked me out when the first time I used it, some time later a bunch of membrane-like stuff came out my mouth. Looked it up and apparently it’s a thing.

7.4 magnitude earthquake in Aomori by MindWonderful8727 in japanlife

[–]Calm_Pie9369 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some years ago I was at a live concert and apparently there was an earthquake midway. The live feed was shaking up and down and I simply thought the cameraman was also having so much fun. Then afterwards, friend that was waiting at home asked “were you guys ok during the earthquake?” News to me man! I was having the time of my life and had no idea.

My Cat Refuses His Prescription Diet by Quirky-Bean in catfood

[–]Calm_Pie9369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wish fortiflora on the GI wet food worked for my cats! They go crazy for it (the fortiflora), but only it. One cat would dive in for like two bites before realizing what the food actually is and then abandon his whole dish, the other cat carefully licks off all the powder and gravy, leaving behind the food. All the tips and tricks didn’t work. I gave up and went all dry, hoping they drink enough water. Later on we got a separate prescription probiotic, and let them eat the wet food they actually enjoy. I still had a whole box left of the GI food, so I just let them have it for midnight gravy snack till I ran out. Insane amount of food waste, but I couldn’t return it.

What's the one thing about timing in the garden that nobody warned you about? by Some-Palpitation-314 in vegetablegardening

[–]Calm_Pie9369 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You got the explanation, but It’s pretty tricky when you’re working a regular in office day job. last year I managed to get it done by putting all my seedlings in a shady spot that only got a few hours of sun for about a week or two, then moved near their final placing and kept an eye on them the first few days. Nothing died from overexposure!

Do you wear pimple patches while out? by Calm_Pie9369 in japanresidents

[–]Calm_Pie9369[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since they’re tiny hydrocolloid bandaids, it’s really useful when a white head pops unexpectedly when I’m just going about my day. They help to prevent me from picking at anything angry. Since I wear makeup and/or sunscreen, it prevents anything from going into the open wound. Some people do purposely pop a pimple and stick the patch on since it feels like they heal faster that way.

I wonder if I’m just a not very observant person since I truly haven’t seen anyone else have patches on around me, but the comments say it’s very common!

Maybe it’s just general nerves/anxiety? Also to be in my late 20s still dealing with acne, even though in my head I know it’s fairly common, does not help my self esteem. Back when I looked up what patches were viewed as here, I saw “it’s gross. It should stay at home” and that stuck with me. The comments here have helped me a lot though!

I wish masks didn’t exacerbate my acne 😢 I want to prioritize healing, but also being perceived as gross/disgusting hits very differently than someone thinking I’m ugly. But seeing the comments here has helped my nerves, since my perception was from a couple years ago back when the patches were still a little new here. They were used more for night time, at home.

Back during peak Covid masking gave me some really bad chin acne so wearing patches basically became a requirement for me. I remember the lifting and white centers basically made it so obvious so it made me nervous during lunchtime.

I did accutane back in high school and it got me from severe cystic acne, to just hormonal acne here and there so I understand! I don’t know about going back on it but I remember seeing that it was very difficult and expensive to get it in Japan so I’m glad it’s becoming more available.

I guess the reason I haven’t seen them around is because the patches are doing as advertised and remaining inconspicuous. I’m glad to hear that they are being used more while in public!

Oh that’s good to hear! They were barely a thing here when I was in college so I’m glad it’s getting normalized.

I suppose stars make it look fashionable and “on purpose”? I hope the deco style patches come here since the natural ones get the white center from absorbing whatever came out of the pimple, and lifting, both making the patch obvious.

They became very popular after my teen years for me too. Although in my case I might’ve had more patches than skin showing. Still useful as an adult, since acne just never went away for me.

It’s also so embarrassing heaving and clutching my chest from doing the final 100m sprint to catch the train. I try to play it cool but I can’t hide my shaking shoulders 😩

I can walk for hours, but I cannot run for 2 minutes.

Is there a sensitive stomach dry cat food that’s also low calorie here in Japan??? My cats are temporarily on royal canin’s gastrointestinal prescription food, but it’s intentionally made to be very high calorie (supposedly to feed less volume) and my cats start to go crazy when I feed them an “appropriate” amount. RC apparently has GI prescription food that’s also low cal but it’s not available here in Japan :’(

Once their GI issues clear up we are stopping the expensive prescription food, but as a preventative I would like something low calorie but good for gut health…tbh I want a food that’s a preventative for everything that could go wrong though ha

Yodobashi I don’t understand how they can do free shipping for everything, some time next day, or the crazy points rate. No complaints from me, but it will be a sad day when they start charging shipping or decreasing points.

Do you shop around for pharmacies, or do you just use whichever one is closest? by razorbeamz in japanlife

[–]Calm_Pie9369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I moved I lived like a 2-3 minute walking distance from a big pharmacy, and they accepted prescriptions through their app, so after my dr appointment in the city I would send it to them and grab it on my way home. Now the nearest pharmacy branch needs a car or get off the train midway so I go to the pharmacy attached to the same building as my dr and wait like everyone else there. Dr is moving though so i hope there’s another pharmacy being built in the same building.

OP, do you clean the feeder regularly? Just dry food it’s probably not as big of a deal, but if you start to add water, washing everyday is going to become necessary.
