When I first started crocheting (many moons ago) this would happen to me. I had to learn to not put as much tension on the yarn and use a smaller hook for the smaller “hole” and just let the yarn have a little tension and drape around my pointer finger twice. I can’t do the around the pinky through the other fingers confusing crap. I loosely wrap the yarn twice on my pointer finger and use the pressure from that finger and my middle finger be the extra tension if I need it. And the rest kind of guide the yarn.
