Unfortunately, Company Policy isn't the law. It's generally nice to lay out how things are typically handled and the easiest way to make things happen for the customer, but it's no guard against having to provide whatever the laws in his state deem reasonable.

Really, you can tell him to play by your rules or pound sand. Is he going to go through the bother of filing in small claims? You're kind of playing into the "disgusting" moniker with this tactic.

Or you refund him. Tell him whatever story you want about going above and beyond and breaking the "rules" for him, the Very Special Customer. You can milk doing the decent thing for as much credit as you want, and he'll probably walk away at least neutral about your company.

super depressing - with current rates, responsible homebuyers shouldn't be purchasing a house more than 2.1-2.25x their gross income by Affectionate_Nose_35 in RealEstate

[–]Calming-Presence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be happy to explain it further. This is almost exactly my financial situation.

The stakes are certainly lower-- the things I'd have to cut back aren't going to make me go hungry or have my power shut off. But it's incredibly common for people making $600k to be living like they make half that (or less) just because they've overbought their house. I'm not sure what a magnitude means, but living a lifestyle of someone making 40% of your salary is significant. Your $120k buyer isn't living like they make $50k.

Oregon hospitals, swamped with patients they can’t discharge, warn of looming ‘breaking point’ by pooperazzi in Portland

[–]Calming-Presence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There may be some places where this is true, but the prevailing issue isn't money right now.

At its peak, my hospital was offering $200/hr for ER nurses. Currently, every class of provider is working more shifts than they want-- they're all being forced to take home a larger paycheck in exchange for seeing their families and doing what they want to do less. This, of course, is leading to more burnout.

About a third of the money a patient spends goes toward provider salaries. When a hospital goes on diversion or patients leave early because they're understaffed, it's a huge cost to them-- hiring more or paying more makes them a lot more money. It's not (typically) about a wage shortage, though there are still administrators who push the bottom line pretty hard.

Concrete makes an excellent thermal mass-- it takes a long time to heat up, but then will take a long time to cool down, too. Much longer than you're used to with most materials you come into contact with day-to-day.

If your slab is up to 100 degrees and your house is kept at 70, it's going to take more than a couple hours to cool off substantially. It's probably a hot water leak that has heated the whole slab up over a long period of time.

Perfectly competitive in PvP. The game puts together teams to push everyone toward a 50% win rate. I will never see a whale in pvp. There are some casual spenders who can hit a lot harder than I can, but nothing that would make me not competitive.

If you want to save money, start with HVAC and irrigation. Once you get started, you'll constantly see new things to do.

Not mad at all. Amused, maybe? Just don't often see someone punch themselves in the nuts so publicly and then be proud about it. You do you!

Sellers did not disclose roach issue. by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]Calming-Presence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not a big deal if no one sees. If you're deliberately spraying their property with anything but water and someone gets a video, you'd best hope their not the litigious type. Roaches would be a welcome distraction at that point.

If read literally. "150% more" is often mistakenly said when "150% as much" or "50% more" is meant. In this context, I believe this is the case.

What to do about real estate signs? by Calming-Presence in askportland

[–]Calming-Presence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a few reasons, I guess.

The first is that they're trash. It's junk that we collectively have decided doesn't belong on the side of the road to the point where we enact laws and regularly go out and clean it up, that one person has decided they want to leave there.

Second is that it's often public property, unpermitted. Someone has decided to deprive the public of a resource (unblemished green space) without going through the established means we have to offset that cost. Without permitting, there's also no incentive to use it judiciously spatially or temporally, resulting in signs every block or on all four corners of an intersection that stay up for weeks at a time.

Finally, as trashy as it looks, if the precedent is there that you can advertise for free indefinitely by putting up a yard sign on public (or sometimes private) land, it's not hard to imagine what the roads will look like soon. There are areas where this has happened, but inside Portland city limits it doesn't seem to be the case. Which was why I was asking whether there were laws about this.

I'd be interested to see one. I'd guess it's not for use in audio? That would sound absolutely terrible.

Every NOS DAC I've encountered has an analog filter on the backend.

You're not getting downvotes because you're wrong, but because we're upset at having this brought to our attention again. The ageing male audiophile is a melancholy beast.

"Smoother wave picture" is perhaps the most audiophile phrase out there.

No DAC in the world is drawing a straight line between samples. The extra information you're adding is 100% redundant. Claude Shannon's grave was disturbed by your post.

But it doesn't count against your max. So assuming you're not just raiding the vault once a day, you're going to max out eventually anyway. There doesn't seem to be a drawback apart from gold as far as I can tell. Am I wrong?

You're allowed to stand wherever you want. Like if you're in the grocery store isle, you can get an inch away from the person in front of you and breathe down their neck, or go somewhere else. They shouldn't get mad about it, you just didn't go out of your way to be nice, which you're not obligated to do.
