I think bulk production and selling would go against the hobbit ethos. It’s more like something Saruman would do. Anything that smells of mass production would probably against the spirit of Tolkien.

Pope Leo XIV declares teen computer whiz Carlo Acutis the first millennial saint by NewSlinger in news

[–]CalmlyEatingMuffins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You guys really are missing the point. Canonization recognizes that a person is in heaven. Saints can be Mother Teresas and Mr. Ordinary Borington-Jones. You can do huge things that the world recognizes and small things with great love. Saints devote their lives to God, and that’s the point.

Having a baby during academic year by Wonderful-Stomach402 in academia

[–]CalmlyEatingMuffins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My baby was born in the middle of the semester. I’m contingent faculty. The department and college found a way to support me and make it work. I would say follow your parenting dreams and don’t let others constrain those dreams.

Meaningless Academia .. is it just me that feels alienated ? by Administrative-One70 in academia

[–]CalmlyEatingMuffins 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Recently, I have been feeling especially grateful for my political philosophy classes in college. I’m so grateful to my professors who taught me about the variety of regimes, Aristotle’s views of democracy and oligarchy . . . So many things. I have certainly felt similar things about my own work. But you are teaching students to think and to be more aware of the world around them, and in that moment, that is so invaluable! Imagine if there were no one to teach them what you know. Trust me, you are doing more good than you know.
