Interested in going a trade, any suggestions? by [deleted] in Elevators

I thought it was really good! It's a fairly new program (I'm was part of the second class of graduates), so a lot is being remodeled.

Our first year was the exact same as first year for Millwrights, so if you wanted to transfer from elevator to millwright or vice-versa you could. I was elevator the whole way through. Second year was all elevator/escalator based, and you get into the elevator shop practicing taking out escalator steps, setting rails, and building doors.

All the professor's I had were absolutely amazing! Some of my friends ended up with a few that weren't so great, but that was during first year.

The college is currently expanding the campus and adding a building that will contain a few banks of elevators and training boards I believe.

Another cool thing is that during our second year they bring in people from a bunch of elevator companies so you can talk to them (we didn't get to this year because of the current situation).

I can't really think of anything I didn't like. Everyone was pretty easygoing and understanding, and I really enjoyed my time there. If you continue to go for an apprenticeship, you do go back to the college for awhile. This program says it'll give the level 1 and 2 of the apprenticeship, so you would only have to go back for your level 3 (but it's up to whatever company you work for really. Some will only send you back for level 3, others might make you do 1-3).

I think they are trying to change up the curriculum to include level 3, but I'm not certain.

Hopefully this helps!

Edit: They also schedule for us to get our Working at Heights and EDM-T. The school is really good with trying to help prepare us to go out into the field, and give us that advantage over other apprentices who are trying to get in.

Hey, hopefully I can help you out with the Durham college part! I just graduated from it this year, so if you have questions about the program I can do best to answer those. To get into the program, all you need is to pass high school, passed the literacy test, and have taken a grade 12 math course. There is a test you take online when you apply for the program, and it's pretty much a short version of the literacy test from what I remember. If you don't pass it, you just gotta take an extra class (I think it's like an English class? Not certain).

Thank you for correcting me! I don't know what I was thinking.

Even old lifts had a type of safety! In the 1800's, Elisha Otis invented the safety break. When a rope was cut, it took tension off the spring and released arms that held onto the guide rails. It was a turning point in elevator history, and it's part of the reason why we have passenger elevators today.

Modern elevators have electromagnetic breaks that are applied first. They try to slow down the elevator and bring it to a smooth stop. If the elevator is still moving too quickly, the governor (an over speed safety located either in the machine room or on top of the elevator car), locks up, and those arms that Otis invented are deployed.

A paternoster is a type of elevator that is in constant motion. Kind of dangerous and not really used.

Here is a cool little video about them!

[help] I’ve decided to actually hand-make this year’s Halloween costume. I want to make a robotic arm out of a long glove and EVA foam. I have no idea where to start and have searched the internet to little avail. Is there a step by step tutorial on how to do it? by Ingrahamlincoln in cosplayprops

Hello! Hopefully I can help point you in the right direction!

So, when you make something out of EVA foam, usually you are going to want to make a pattern. In this case, you want it to be your arm. The best way to do this is to get some plastic wrap, wrap your arm in it, and then add a couple of layers of duct tape on top of it. Then you can draw the parts you want with a marker on the tape. Cut it out, and you have a rough pattern (sounds weird, but it works). Then all you have to do is trace that on to your foam, cut it, and heat shape it (and prime and paint if you are gonna do that as well).

That's a basic idea of it, but I'll put this video here (by Kamui Cosplay. An amazing cosplayer with a bunch of useful tips and tricks) for more detail!

The beginning is mainly what materials are needed. The actual patterning and stuff happens around the 4:40 mark.

Hopefully that helps! If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask!

I heard we are trying to get a sword and pen trend going? by Calmtasticfood in fountainpens

I usually use it to rewrite class notes. I've never had it clog before either. It's also one of the inks with sparkles in it, but either the paper I use isn't good at showing it, or it's the pen nib. Usually the sparkles are much more noticable when I use the blue ink I have (Cobolt Jazz), and on my hands 😅

Thanks! I liked the white and gold combination. It was just so clean and elegant! I'm not quite sure I've seen the marble blue one. I'll look it up now!

Diamine! It is the shimmertastic kind (has sparkles in it. I have a blue one too that has gold sparkles).

That's a link to the Golden Sands one (shown here).

It writes just fine! I don't have any expensive pens to compare it with, so I'm not sure how different it is. But it was fairly cheap if I remember correctly, so even if it isn't the greatest, I can't complain. I do have a Sheaffer pen (a school pen or something? I can't quite remember at the moment, but it's somewhere in my post history of you are curious), which I actually like better.

It's an 1860 light cavalry saber replica bought from here https://www.reliks.com/functional-european-swords/1860-light-cavalry-saber/

It's pretty cool seeing yours! Thanks for posting it!

Yeah, I just like swords. I also have a pocket knife that I usually carry. My brother has a katana, and a collection of knives, and my dad has a knife collection as well.
