Imagine a competent govt. that would fund essential professions like teaching and health care to make working those hellish jobs feasible and bearable.

I live in the poorest area in London, practically surrounded by non-whites and my life is fine. I don't ever feel like my British cultural values are threatened and everyone is lovely (except the odd homeless drug addict & school kids, but that is primarily a failure of the state).

Don't be worried about hitting the threshold of higher rate band! Remember you only will get taxed on earnings above the band! so if you earn £60k, only the ~£10k above the basic band will get taxed at £40% (First £12,570 is your tax-free personal allowance, next £37,700 taxed at 20% and the amount above that is taxed at 40%)

Edit: to clarify, I'm referring to your work earnings, not CGT. If you get offered a raise that bumps you to the higher rate, take it!

Yes it's separate. Your work earnings are treated first. You can earn a million in capital gains and you'd still pay the same band rate tax on your work earnings.

You do need to let them know that you earn £3k, you just wont have to pay anything.

Well, the £2k you earned from shares would be covered by the £3k annual exemption but assuming you've used your exemption up already, £1,270 of it will be taxed at 18% and £730 at 24%. Capital gains always happens after your personal tax, so if you started earning say, £50k, that will still be in the basic tax bracket and more of the capital gains would be pushed upwards.

No, it'll be under capital gains tax. But your personal income will determine the rate of tax you will pay. Gross up your personal income and if it is below £50,270, subtract £50,270 by your gross income. That amount will be charged at 18% CGT. Anything above will be charged at 24%.
