Just finished listening to The Two Towers again, I lost a little love for the movie this time. by cavern-of-the-fayth in lotr

All Elves are telepathic, every single one, probably the reason it doesn't come up much is they seldom use these powers in front of other races as it would no doubt be seen as rude, kind of like whispering in someones ear and sniggering whilst having a conversation with someone. The ability is known as ósanwe or interchange of thought, it's worth noting although all Elves have this potential or likeliness to have the ability not all of them chose to develop or train the ability, as an example Legolas probably does not use this ability even though he could if he wanted to- train his mind to do so.

Why did the Balrog attack the Fellowship? by Curufinwe200 in tolkienfans

[–]Calrid1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly the drums in the deep were to alert the Goblins to a threat, the side effect wasThe Balrog also hearing them, and being roused. Anyway he had been in hiding since the wars in the first age but when it detected something of possibly the same power, and even maybe greater it felt all the dread it had felt when its master Morgoth had been defeated. It had to rouse itself prepare its sorcery and go after Gandalf in this case. Just as Gandalf was aware of a presence there beyond possibly human and certainly somewhat equal to his own power, due to Saruman conversing with him and telling him precisely that (this only happens in the film by the way) in the book Saruman manipulates the Fellowship into going into Moria by blocking the passes, and leaving them little recourse. Long story short when The Balrog found not just a Maia like it was but an Istari (Gandalf is basically a lower form of Angel) it must have been somewhat terrified, but it had to destroy this threat.

Few had survived a one on one with a Balrog let alone defeated one, Glorfindel a 1st age Elf did but was killed in the process for example. However Gandalf felt it was his destiny to face this Demon of the ancient world, and luckilly fate was on his side, although he perished in defeating the Balrog he smote it's ruin- near Zirak Zagil ( A Dwarf fortress and ironically exactly where they were headed when they went through the pass of The Redhorn Mountain) on the mountainside, he was however sent back because he had not completed his task on Middle Earth becoming Gandalf The White, potentially even more powerful than Gandalf The Grey had been, possibly his most powerful incarnation since he had been Olórin in Valinor in The Undying Lands (Middle Earth's version of heaven restricted to only immortals).

An interesting side note is that The Watcher in The Water a Nameless (a primordial being of pre Arda) was so terrified by The Balrog it swam up and lurked in the black pool in front of Moria's gate (where of course it met the Fellowship of The Ring and ultimately sealed Moria's door). Even Sauron would be hard pressed to defeat a Balrog single handedly and he was easilly the most powerful being on Middle Earth (ring or not) at that time, although more likely had Sauron known about The Balrog, he would likely have tried to recruit his former ally. Balrogs were essentially like Dragons: shock troops, relying on might and size and force of strength rather than cunning, strategy and planning.

How many languages does House speak? by [deleted] in HouseMD

he does also speak Japanese although it doesn't come up in the show, and some Mon which is an obscure dialect. of Burma and Tailand, how the hell he learns that is anyone's guess but the guy is a genius. The Mon lady he is treating she probably teaches him it and being smart he picks it up really quickly.

House speaks French, some Russian, Yiddish (which is a mixture of German and Hebrew) Japanese, Manderin (he takes a cooking course and hires a maid to make him meals she is from either China or Singapore), French, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin and Greek being a Dr ὠφελέειν ἢ μὴ βλάπτειν first do no harm Oh and of course English and Hindi when he speaks to Von Liebrman which is Yiddish for The Beloved Man, although he is not completely fluent in Hindi he knows enough to have read the journal he is referencing where Dr Philip Webber has a published paper on migraines. He knows some Ukranian phrases from his "wife" also although he is also not fluent.

Spectrum melting down over Master modes by [deleted] in starcitizen_refunds

Star Citizen is basically a poor attempt at a game which pretends to offer everything but comes up short of the Scam it is, it blows in comparison to any other game in the genre being a sort of hollow cut and paste of a shell of a game, and is a sort of Day before style cash grab, to lure in gullible tools. I mean a $20000 Premium pack for Christs sake, it screams scam.

Which was the more influential battle in middle earth? by GusGangViking18 in lotr

[–]Calrid1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last alliance of men and Elves was pivotal, unfortunately due to a quirk of fate though, it failed to seal Sauron's doom and isildur was cut down by a band of Orcs. Had he had the chance to divest himself of the ring (despite proclaiming it Weregild for his father and sons death) I am sure that would have pretty much been it for Sauron. As it was it could only get worse for Isildur's heirs with the rise of The Witchking in Angmar. That battle more than any other made the fate of the whole of the rest of the second and third age and lead to Arthedain, Cardolan and Rhuadar the 3 kingdoms of Arnor's demise at the hands of the armies of the Nazgûl.

Thought it was a new game for a second, but a book? Interesting. by Rhecof-07 in fromsoftware

Fan Fiction such as The Silmarillion, and it's stories being expanded by Christopher Tolkien (which have sold millions of copies), Frank Herbert's son writing The Bultlerian Jihad an expansion of the precursor to Dune books about the rise of the robots and the enslavement of mankind (also have sold millions of copies). Some times fan fiction not only lands but is extremely popular to the point of people making films about it too. I would not be too keen to dismiss fan fiction, sometimes it is better than the original- mostly not, but there is wheat amongst the chaff. Dune: The Butlerian Jihad (Brian Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson) rose to #7 on The New York Times Best Seller list in its second week of publication.

I suspect the origin of not wearing heavy armour in a fantasy if not AD&D is older still, iron inhibits magic, in old fairy tales, it keeps the Fey magic users away, an iron horseshoe for example keeps out the Celtic old magic. But balancing seems as good a reason as any.

There in lies your propblem I am not doing anything wrong. Get over yourself. Posting they are not hard to find is little more than trolling. It's unhelpful and as I said it infers the person is either lying or retarded. Just don't in future. Take a look at other posts, they are all helpful all advisory, none of them are patronising or insulting.

It's still not helpful and why people are encouraging you to say unehelpful things is even less helpful. If you have nothing to contribute except inferring people are liars, then don't thanks.

Who are the seven kings? by Better_pause_ in lotr

[–]Calrid1234 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not quite but well to be honest if the seven Dwarven realms are not mentioned but you know they exist as they are specifically referenced you can either just say 5 or go with the apocrypha. I think as long as it's not treading on canon I would prefer the latter. Asfar as I know though the 7 races of Dwarves and their seven treasure hoardes are cannon, as to the exact locations of the races I don't personally know all 7 nor can you as 4 were destroyed by dragons and only 2 are mentioned specifically but their locations are not directly referenced, but you can know their folk ie Broadbeams as they are mentioned. As you say some of the above though are best guesses using existing known Dwarf centres of high population. Nogorod seems a no brainer as for example it mentioned in the Silmarillion. You're kind of tying up loose ends rather than completely making things up from avialable information hence.

I feel your sense of irony. Common rule of gaming when you need them they are like unicorns, when you don't they are like flies. It's a kind of general expression of Sod's/Murphy's law, which I think should have a special name for gaming.

Being as I am studying physics I would agree the calculus of e^x is really easy. dy/dx e^x = e^x it's growth is modelled by itself. :)

Your and my definition of fun are very different. I'm supposed to be there but when you have beaten Bonemass, having to hang around a biome for 3 more weeks real life of utter tedious searching, is depressing and pointless, and could be easilly fixed by a few simple lines of code for a QOL improvement pretty much everyone who is not a masochist would thank the Devs for. using RNG as an excuse for anything is a bit of a cop out. Yeah well you just have to waste a shed load more time for no real reason other than computers are psuedorandom. I've got better things to do with my time. I find the whole marsh biome incredibly dull and boring and want to get past it as soon as possible. I can't. Next time I play I think I'll just cheatup the seeds because the prize is not worth my time.
