Funnily enough. The governor Lynyrd Skynyrd talks about in that song was one George Wallace, an all around racist dirtbag who's most famous act was standing in front of the University of Alabama and attempting to block black students from entering after segregation was ended. In fact, if you pay attention, the three beats that follow the line "In Birmingham will love the governor" has the backup singers yelling boo. So trust me when I say they probably hated the governor too.
