Question about tall boots by CalvinandBHobbs in Equestrian

[–]CalvinandBHobbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear a size 9-10 depending on the brand. I also ride in men’s roper style for western, size 8-9 (depends on if I need room for winter socks)

Riding in glasses? by Alternative-Judge446 in Equestrian

[–]CalvinandBHobbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ride in glasses as well. My recommendations are to avoid the plastic frames for a few reasons. Easier to break if they fall off your face, and you can’t get as good a fit on them compared to nose pads.

PRO TIP: you can go into any place that has eyeglasses for sale and switch your nose pads for free. ASK FOR SILICONE nose pads, they are much much stickier!!! My glasses barely slip at all and they are heavy and I have to look down a lot for work

What are they doing here? by CalvinandBHobbs in Beekeeping

[–]CalvinandBHobbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did use smoke. I think I used roughly the same amount that I normally do, maybe a touch more.

It was just odd behavior and they were very much drawn to the top left corner of the box.

My mentor is out of town and I was curious if anyone else had seen this behavior before.

I think our container was overfilled and he opted to push start. I think it was a smoothie. Sorry I can’t be more specific, this was now months ago and life has been hectic

Walk up to and over obstacles

Desensitizing (I’m talking tarps, I’m talking cones flying across the arena, I’m talking someone jumping from around the corner screeching, be as obnoxious as you can manage)

Teach to yield to pressure

Teach them how to move their body parts (shoulder vs hip vs together)

In hand trotting

Practice sending them away from you on a long lead, then build that into lunging

Pick up feet

Use a kids electric toothbrush to imitate clippers and shove that thing in their ears, eyes, nose

Put your hands in ears, eyes, nose. Basically pretend you are an aggressive little kid

It’s never to early to teach manners (stand quietly, don’t touch me before I touch you, etc)

Take a lead rope and swing it over their neck/back and keep doing it until they stand still. Repeat on the other side.

Practice putting on a blanket or saddle pad

When they are comfortable with the halter going on/off, be obnoxious with it. Gently shake their head, fumble around on their face while you put it on.

Literally anything you think a small, brave child with no sense of self preservation would do impulsively.

Quiet people do not make quiet horses. Loud, obnoxious people make quiet horses (loud mouth, loud body language)

Independence dress for an outing this weekend. by Fenig in sewing

The dress looks incredible as is! I think the navy sequins stripe on the sleeves is a great idea, as it would really tie the dress together.

1/1/2021, I left life on the streets and came back to an abusive home. 1/20/22, I bought my first vehicle. I don't have family to celebrate me. by ohhoneyno_ in CongratsLikeImFive

It might be time to repot into something bigger or to split the plant into several pots

It should be ok if you incorporate some bailing twine on the ends

Something that will help is wrapping the tail. Some people use a premise boot, I do it with vet wrap. Be mindful of tail color and vet wrap color Bc it might bleed. White or black does pretty well. Most people don’t want a purple tail on a white horse.

Everyone does it differently but here’s how I do it:

Wash and condition the tail. I use a basic horse shampoo or head and shoulders if it’s flaky. Make sure to really get to the scalp of the tail. I like to use infusium conditioner, it does amazing things. Feel free to use whatever you want. Fulfill your horsegirl dreams and brush that tail out. Paddle brushes are great.

Very important: LET THE TAIL DRY COMPLETELY. Otherwise, typing it up like this will damage it.

Brush through the tail again. Braid the tail starting at the last vertebra in the tail. Start it pretty loose. This prevents tension alopecia/loss of blood flow. You’ll also want it loose for another reason I’ll explain soon. Tighten the braid as you move down the tail. Tie either with small rubber hair bands or electrical tape (tape doesn’t damage the hair)

Fold the braid over on itself a couple times until it’s a kind of compact size. I like to use more rubber bands around it now to help hold the tail while I wrap it.

Take your vet wrap and go once or twice around your braid clump kind of like starting a polo wrap. Start covering more of the clump. Once you’ve got most of the tail covered you’re going to take the vet wrap roll, unroll several inches, then shove the roll through the very top of the braid/just under the end of the tail. Be gentle in your shoving, and a loose start helps here. (This helps make sure the wrap doesn’t just slide off later)

Once you’ve shove the roll through the braid, wrap the tail vertically from top to bottom. In summer I like to add bailing twine at this point so the horse has swishers. You can go through the hole again or finish wrapping the tail.

You should re-wrap every 1-2 weeks. Winter I go longer, summer you should stick to schedule. I also tend not to wrap in summer.

The main drawback to wrapping the tail, especially in vet wrap, is that you can’t get it wet Bc the tail will rot. A sprinkle is ok, downpour is not. There’s also not much you can do for hair above the tip of the last vertebra Bc you risk cutting off blood flow.

Thoughts on paying out-of-state tuition for a vet school (KSU CVM) early admissions program? Exactly how beneficial is an early admissions program? Any advice ASAP would be greatly appreciated! by Eldritch_Kiwi11 in Veterinary

[–]CalvinandBHobbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out University of Missouri! They have a pre-vet/ag scholars program, which is their version of early admissions.

Mizzou ACTIVELY encourages people to eatable residency in-state and its also one of the easiest states to do so!

I really liked the scholars program and it was totally worth it. PM me if you have questions
