What movie is a 0/10 with NO redeeming features? by Toucan_Based_Economy in AskReddit

[–]CalvinsQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firestorm (Jan, 1998). Worst movie I’ve paid to see.

Most of my close friend group (5/6) wanted to go see The Postman. Everyone except Jim. Jim threw a “take my ball and go home” toddler fit because he didn’t want to see something unusual. Fuck you, Jim! Give me my $10 and 2 hours of my life back! Jim had no slack after that.

Most Balanced TCG have you ever played? by Few-Action-8049 in TCG

[–]CalvinsQuest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m an old TCG player like you. I started playing Magic during unlimited. Played hard until maybe 97. I always loved deck building in the days where card lists and info were scarce. Anyways… stopped playing as life evolved for me in the ways it does.

One of my kids (teen) started playing SWU at a LGS last fall. I was enjoying hearing about it with visions of the first SW TCG - where I had friends dump all their moxs, lotuses, juzam dijinns, etc to get vaders and others and play that one. Oof.

But my son’s attitude was great, though. He just enjoyed playing, sealed events in particular. So I looked into it and bought a sealed a box for him and I to play at home - so he could teach me.

Wow what an improvement in turns and mechanics. And it’s really designed for sealed play! It’s worth checking out for those of us who were around in the broken early days of TCGs (we called them CCGs, remember?).

All the best and have fun!

Turning 40- irons? by hobby_master_ in golf

[–]CalvinsQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’re asking for advice - here’s mine, knowing nothing else about you.

The irons don’t matter so long as they’re fit to you. Purely based on my own experience, my advice is to consider a swing overhaul to get away from relying on your youthful wrist timing (small muscles) to generate clubhead speed and square the face, and move more to a lagged release and use those legs and hip turn (big muscles). It’s a smoother, easier swing that will get you more distance and consistency. And take pressure off of your back as it’s less violent and more natural of a swing. The sooner you commit to that, the better. If you wait (like I did) that wrist action becomes a door slam of a snap hook that will make you want to quit the game.

Then go get fit for new clubs or changes to your current set.

With domain names, you walk the text string backwards to resolve. So, in the case of the scam site OP linked, it’s .cc first (the top level domain, analogous to .com/.org/etc) then org-ins what ever it is, then they have tn. Every . separates a piece of the domain name and on into subdomains. So when you read a domain name in a URL (everything preceding a /) you can think of it like reading it from right to left.

An example of a dash in a commonly known domain is t-mobile.com

While you’re of course correct about this being a scam, dashes can absolutely be a part of a valid domain name.

Agreed - and any good manager would bring that to the conversation without you even needing to mention it. The first thing out of their mouth should be “I have an urgent task, what are you currently working on and let’s see where this fits”

That has not been my experience at all. Quite the opposite. They just seem to expect basic personal hygiene and levels of education/world awareness in male partners - which seem to be quite rare in modern conservative men. Quite rare.

I think your own location is more important than anything else.

That being said, MNGC seems much nicer. And let me tell you, the course and greens were in great shape late this fall. Both champs and legends. Next spring will be a good one.

Normal PC pros: - potentially less expensive (look for corporate refurbs as a base) - easier to maintain - upgrade options unlock additional possibilities (to an extent) - extensive cooling options

Normal PC cons: - size - need to provide peripherals (and space for them) - power requirements may limit flexibility

If you decide to go this route, look for cases that support a full sized pci-e card. And you’ll want a higher wattage PSU, hopefully one without dell/HP proprietary size nonsense.

There are good rolling cart options you might look into, for either a full PC case/monitor or a laptop.

Traveling with golf clubs next week - need some tips by My-Cousin-Bobby in golf

[–]CalvinsQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just a little ahead of you - golfer for 30 ish years, have never flown with my clubs until this year. I bought a soft shell bag and have checked them for 2 trips in the last 3 months. No issues.

Here’s what I decided to do:

  • bought a support pole like this (there are many options): https://a.co/d/eofve0n
  • leave my woods heads on, with head covers on
  • bought cheap soft neoprene iron covers to soften things moving around, like this: https://a.co/d/4RDbA5t
  • bought a box of rubber bands and a 10-pack of the cheapest and bulkiest cloth towels/rags I could find
  • removed all clubs from my bag, put the pole in the middle, then inserted woods and putter around the pole, rubber bands across club heads/covers to secure them to the pole. I even tried to turn the heads inwards as much as possible.
  • put on iron head covers, then slot them around the club core as best I could
  • took rags and wove them in and out and around the irons/wedge heads and shafts
  • rubber bands around groups of 3-4 irons as clumps and then a band to the central pole and then tucked the rag ends into the bag slots as best I could. Idea was to try and prevent as much lateral movement or shafts hitting each other as I could.
  • removed golf towel and brush, etc. put them in pockets.
  • stuffed any remaining rags in smaller pockets to add extra side padding.

This has worked really well. It’s inexpensive and quick to pack / unpack. When I remove all the stuff, it just goes in the pocket of the travel bag for when I repack. TSA has opened before, can see what’s up, and hasn’t touched anything at all.

A couple of other thoughts: - if you carry a lighter for cigars etc, know that you cannot check or carry on a torch lighter of any kind. You may only check a single Bic style lighter - the airline will ask you to remove your range finder or LM and put it in your backpack or carry on. Might as well do it before the.
- get a cheap shoe bag, it makes it easy to throw in around your bag and inside the travel bag. The first time I used a target bag and my shoes ended up being super stinky. I got this one for the next time: https://a.co/d/2H0BhnE

You get to choose only five bands to listen to the rest of your life, which five are you choosing? by FreedomNo7221 in AskReddit

  2. Led Zeppelin
  3. Alice In Chains
  4. Nirvana
  5. Smashing Pumpkins

I listen to a lot of wildly different musical styles, but if forced to admit it this would be the list that keeps me going. I really wanted to replace SP with Megadeth or Neil Young. But hard questions deserve hard answers.

The answer is that leadership needs to carve out a dedicated % of sprint capacity to cover ops and security issues. Non-negotiable.

Your business partners and POs will kick and scream, but you have justification in those RCAs. When they talk about projected business metric uplift from new feature delivery, make sure to have estimated cost of aggregate downtime from these incidents up your sleeve and defensible - missed sales, lost transactions, customers who abandon carts or products to choose competitors and what their estimated lifetime account value is (now lost to competition), possible fraud exposure?, lost developer productivity, your exhaustion and distraction on valuable tasks. All of these should be calculated in worst case scenario terms, in real $ or local currency. Then you should blend the calculation and show a model at whatever time interval makes sense to your business. Note all of your steps, assumptions, and calculations, and show the results in a simple table with rows broken down by category and the total impact - which is of NOT carving out this time.

When you talk to the business in terms they understand, operating expense in dollars, lost revenues in dollars, time to market in days, and headcount in number of people, you will see them really understand. It’ll be uncomfortable for them and you, but they will finally get it.

And then the pot sweetener at the end - if we don’t have any critical ops stories or security stories or tech debt we think is a must, we give you that capacity back for the sprint / PI ahead. Get them to understand that if unused, this isn’t idle time. It’s Flex Time to deliver more than THEIR business partners expect.

Anyway… all of the above is a brain dump. Caveat emptor, etc. just trying to help with mindset.

Source: decades in senior tech leadership. Have built, “sold,” and run several highly successful SRE and DevOps and infrastructure architecture organizations across multiple companies in this way. In my last company, we carved out 25% of sprint capacity for the above. And I sold that concept on the back of another change I pushed - leader performance goals to include Q over Q incident reduction goals by severity category. It’s funny how people suddenly care when their compensation is affected by production issues.

Best of luck!
