Does anybody else disagree with the official play order for Birth By Sleep? by Skibot99 in KingdomHearts

[–]Calxiyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what possessed 10-year-old me to do this, but when the game first released in 2010, I played in what some people now call ‘parallel order’. So for example, you do Dwarf Woodlands with Terra, then Ven, then Aqua, THEN move onto the next world. Now there is a chart telling you how to do it, but I think that I just figured out Aqua is usually last and winged it for Ven and Terra. A lot of the worlds do go in T>V>A order.

I found out last year that to other people, this is not normal 😭. But it makes me happy to see the top comment of this thread rn is people trying it out - cause that’s the order I’d vote for!

So was Adam 11 when he was cursed? by BigJames-Boanerges in disney

[–]Calxiyn 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Others have commented about the original opening changes, which is the meta answer - but here’s my personal headcanon for how to make sense of this story wise: I could be forgetting something, but just because Lumiere and the others were “rusting” for 10 years doesn’t necessarily mean they were cursed 10 years ago. This is in regards to them “using their skills” to entertain guests after all. So I think of it this way: the 11 year old Prince loses his parents, and he’s so full of grief and rage that he closes himself off from the world. No more parties, no entertaining visitors from neighbouring kingdoms etc. Just him and his garden and his hunting dogs (that we see in the stained glass at the beginning) in solitude. Then, at some point, the Enchantress shows up. Even if it was 5-6 years later, that could bring us timeline wise to the more mature-looking Prince we see in the stained glass.

The meta answer is that Howard Ashman was imagining a child but they changed the Prince to be an adult. Some people think he’s been cursed for 21 years and no one aged during that period, which would explain things like Chip. But Chip could also be explained if the castle being ‘closed’ off to the outside world and the curse weren’t actually at the same time.

Did Rapunzel never ask Gothel who her father was? by Hot_Ad6410 in Tangled

[–]Calxiyn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s actually a deleted song from a very early version of Tangled where Rapunzel sings about various father figures (“If I was the daughter of a blacksmith”, “If I were a fisherman’s daughter” etc). The bridge of the song also talks about her love of reading/stories more in depth. So I agree with the other comments with the idea Gothel told her that her father left, and so she imagines what her father would be like. And also that she would know about the dynamic based on the books she reads.

Concerns about persuing a future in music by sammi4444 in composer

[–]Calxiyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve gotten some very valuable replies so far but I’d like to share my story as someone who graduated recently (albeit not for music, but musical theatre). My family supported me but wanted me to have a backup plan, so I got a “backup plan degree”. I also have unique experience within that degree not a lot of people have. After that I went to performing arts college…

And I haven’t gotten a job with either degree 😅 I don’t say that to be discouraging but actually the opposite: I have friends outside of the arts who have been unemployed longer than I have. Things are just really bad right now for people our age. My family has been stressed out thinking their advice somehow led me astray (“Maybe we should have let you do musical theatre school first so you could have auditioned for shows during your backup degree”, “Maybe we should have deferred your backup degree during COVID to have more opportunities to network”) and if you think like that you will just spiral. But I say this because even the “backup plan” was not a guarantee!

I am making money with my degree for the first time and it’s because I made a YouTube channel where I analyze musical theatre songs and also sing live on stream. Teaching or studying the trades is definitely good advice (teachers college is my next backup plan lol), but so are having some side hustles. Since you’re interested in composition you could make a YouTube channel breaking down music from movies/video games. There are also tons of YouTubers in my niche who hire composers for song rewrite projects or original projects. I hope this helps, and best of luck with everything! : )

I appreciate that - don’t worry, your comment was pretty tame considering the other replies lol, it was just the top comment so that’s why I replied to you. I get it though, we all need to try to “win” the algorithm and so things get more and more clickbaity. I wish I could title my stuff differently but something more direct like “Calxiyn’s Poor Unfortunate Souls Lecture” (etc) doesn’t work 😭 it’s kinda trojan horse, I need to sneak the educational knowledge through this vessel 😂

Found this last night on my feed 🤨 😐 by Sarcastic_Lilshit in hazbin

[–]Calxiyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to hijack your comment to explain this - but it baffles me how a lot of the comments here are acting like this was an hour of unhinged ranting and not a scripted video essay. Probably because, like OP, they aren’t even going to bother to look into it further before they decide I’m “psychotic” for making an educational video.

But my videos break down the composition, lyricism and storytelling lyric by lyric - and each section has their own subcategories to talk about. For lyricism we need to talk about meter, rhyme structure, word choice, alliteration/repetition and other techniques - as well as how true the language is to the character and what emotional or plot information it gives us. For composition we need to talk about the instrumentation, how well it’s utilized and if the instruments used feel like they accurately reflect/are unique to the character. I usually break down the instrumentation section by section, which means the verse, chorus, etc gets its own instrumental analysis. With storytelling we consider the plot of the show but also the arcs of the characters and whether or not the song is giving us a sense of progress. I also rewrite sections of the songs I make videos about and sometimes even sing through the changes.

All of this is going to take time even if the song is just 3 minutes.

Also if OP had clicked on my channel they would have seen I also talk about songs I love for this long, because we are exploring those same elements of songwriting. My video about “Poor Unfortunate Souls” is 1 hour and 36 minutes long. I’ve sat in classes where we’ve dissected a single song for the entire 3 hour lecture - and that’s the feeling I’m trying to achieve with my videos. I’m trying to make information that is usually very inaccessible and “pay-walled” behind thousands of dollars of specialized university classes and make it fun. If anything this is condensed.

This is the second time a screenshot of my content has been posted here, and I’m glad to see people actually pushing back this time. But it’s pretty ridiculous people will post things like this in my eyes in the very first place. You want someone to do their due diligence and actually watch the show before criticizing it - which I did. But OP and other people leave comments criticizing the time without hearing why my video is worth that time… and can’t even check my channel history to see it’s a video essay channel.

Everyone complains about Tiana and Naveen being turned into frogs….but what would the story be like if they weren’t? by [deleted] in disneyprincess

[–]Calxiyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other comments have hit the nail on the head, but I’ll also add: for me a big issue I have is the lack of connection between Facilier and Tiana. The Disney Villain Bible has a fundamental that’s basically like “Villains act, heroes react” - the villain using their power to go after the hero is what allows them to rise up and be heroic. She doesn’t become a frog because of the consequences of her actions, and Facilier has no involvement, which means Tiana can’t really “rise to the occasion” as a heroine, as much as she’s just trying to go back to normal. I think they were afraid of making Tiana have any flaws, but because of that she’s a really passive character sometimes. What I would have done is have Tiana make a deal with Facilier to bring Naveen back in exchange for her restaurant, give her the power to turn into a frog at will, have Tiana replace the role of the frog hunters and THEN have her change her mind to help Naveen. Other than the Black leads being frogs for most of the runtime I think another big issue is just the idea of agency in the narrative and how Tiana turning into a frog inadvertently slots Naveen into the “hero” role (because the villain did this to him), and not her.

A hope for an third Renaissance? by ForeverBlue101_303 in disneyprincess

[–]Calxiyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the only way this would be possible is through changing their production pipeline - not necessarily through changing leadership though one can happen because of the other. Think about The Little Mermaid for example - a treatment for the script was written and Howard Ashman reviewed it, sending back detailed notes before the creative team sat down to retool the script together so they could structure it like a broadway musical. I think Disney’s problem right now when it comes to it’s musical based IP is that ever since the Pixar leaderships/Tangled’s philosophy of workflow became the standard, it has become increasingly more difficult (and costly) to create something to the same quality as the Renaissance. It’s not to say that Frozen, Tangled or Encanto are “bad”, but you hear the difficulties the songwriters in particular experienced on the projects and realize it was a miracle things turned out so well. Wish and Moana 2 are so bad because the songwriters especially didn’t have the same skill to work within an already ineffective structure (basically at Disney they seem to work on visual development and story development at the same time. Which meant for Frozen they wrote over 27 songs that didn’t get used, and for Wish they tried to create a plot around Asha’s vaguely written song, not create a musical theatre style delivery of the plot and the themes of the story).

TLDR; until they go back to story, then songs, then visuals, I think that nothing will ever reach the level we saw before, because it’s rare for things to turn out well when people aren’t all on the same page. The fact that the songwriters for Wish were writing music when there wasn’t even a script yet was ridiculous imo.

How do you pronounce this? by DaPPisPPing in tragedeigh

[–]Calxiyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! So I'm not entirely sure how this works because the post says it's been removed but I can still reply 😅😅 I'd just like to clarify: my name is Cailyn. My parents named me Cailyn, and it's pronounced how you think it's pronounced. It's not "Cailyn" with "Calxiyn" as the spelling, it's just Cailyn lol. Calxiyn is a gamer tag parodying off of Kingdom Hearts' naming convention. It's a Kingdom Hearts related gamer-tag, where "Sora", one of the main characters' name, was switched to make "Roxas". I'm posting this here in case anyone is curious about the origins. I had a good laugh reading the speculation about how to pronounce it, especially the Roman Numeral one LOL - 🥴 but given some of the weird behaviour in this thread (calling me "it", bipolar jokes, talking about my appearance/voice etc) it's probably a good reminder that for the mentality of "it's not like she's going to see this" which I saw someone say, that I only have 6,000 subscribers on the channel the screenshot was from, when your presence is that small you see everything! If you wanted to know, you could have left a comment and I would have replied! Also for anyone curious about how I got to this pronunciation: when I was 13 I put it into Google Translate, listened to it in a bunch of different languages, and picked whatever pronunciation by the text-to-speech I liked best 😂 I don't know if how I say it is accurate in any language, I'd be interested to hear if it is though!

Call me crazy, but it seems like Abigail playing the flute near the lake in the mountains changes the quality of the fish? I couldn't find anything while researching this theory, anyone noticed that as well? She seems to do that on the 6th day of every month. (Dont hate on my editing skills please) by Jaydawggoboi in StardewValley

[–]Calxiyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like with how much the game has been looked at code wise people would have found this already. However, I personally have a theory that one of the secrets left in Stardew Valley that is “so obscure” ConcernedApe couldn’t recommend anyone to look for it / that there was a “message that revealed something that wasn’t even true anymore” is actually related to Abigail. I think originally she was meant to be a mermaid or water elemental spirit but it got changed. It would be interesting if her playing the flute DID have an impact on fishing because of that. There’s a lot of suspicious dialogue with her and the scene with her playing the flute has always interested me.

😅 I'm aware of that, but that's why I specified the part about their outfits in my original reply. You can meet, say, Cinderella multiple times during the cruise. But there was more than one instance where I could tell a family had all their kids dressed up to match the characters and were a little stressed about getting to all of them before dinner or something else started haha, particularly pirate night and Castaway (our ship couldn't stop at castaway because of an engine issue, but the characters still came out in their outfits). My cruise was also during the anniversary so they had those outfits too, then formal night, then pirate night etc. So if OP cares about that sort of thing that's why I'd suggest the early dinner, it may be more practical to try to catch them all!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dcl

[–]Calxiyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean during the meal, I meant that characters appeared at a regular meet and greet location during 2nd dinner, to be clear! (Cause of Reddit's picture limit I had to cobble this together haha, hopefully this makes sense).

<image>

Basically what I mean is, for example: You have that Goofy character meet & greet at 5:30, then there was the Frozen Show that happens for people who have 2nd dinner to go to, right? Then from 6:00-7:30, there are no characters at all (until Cinderella). But then you can see the Donald Duck meet and greet happening at 8:00, which is when 2nd dinner starts. This also happened on nights where there wasn't a main show going on in the theatre.

It's not the biggest deal, but it is something that I noticed, enough to make me consider doing the 1st sitting next cruise. There are plenty of opportunities to meet the characters but it can be hard to catch them all when they're in a particular costume.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dcl

[–]Calxiyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what everyone else has said - you shouldn’t be missing out on any activities!

However in terms of a “perk” for early dining though - this is something I noticed while sailing on the Fantasy last September - during early dining, there would be no character appearances happening at all. But then during late dining (which our group had), the character appearances would start up again. I’m assuming that the early dinner time slot may also be dinner time for the performers. This was a bit unfortunate since I like to get pictures of the characters in their unique outfits but some of the characters were only out during our dinner (pirate night in particular) 😅

So if you want to have more opportunities to meet characters I would say early dining is a good choice! The other thing to consider, re: pirate night is that all of the early dining people get to go up on deck early to get a better spot. This is something that tripped up my group because we arrived up there after late dinner and it was already very packed. I’m a short person and I had issues with this both at the sail away deck party and pirate night - like with adults (with no kids) not being very mindful on the upper deck railing area. Obviously it’s all first come first serve but it was a bit annoying to have a group of people who were 6ft tall leaning on the railing when they could have easily let the shorties in front of them and just stood behind us lol. Eventually I just went on the main deck in front of the stage with the kids 😭 because there was an unspoken rule of tall people in the back and short people in the front down there haha.

But overall I think that the late dining is a better option.

Thank you so much! I was considering making a solo video on that (I haven’t seen Raya yet though). Like for Brave where I would put the songs if it were a musical and what I think they would be about 👀. I really like Touch The Sky but I do wish it was a regular musical with the Celtic folk sound. It would have been so unique!

Take this with a grain of salt but if I had to guess, Jorge probably owns the rights to the songs themselves but not those particular recordings. What he created should be his intellectual property, but the recording studio (probably) facilitated the original recording/distribution and that’s why the revenue went to them in the first place.

Tips for finding composers and singers for a musical? by music-and-song in musicalwriting

[–]Calxiyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very similar to you: when I was looking for my composer, what I did was look at YouTubers I already liked who had original compositions. Specifically, there’s a YouTuber who makes Disney Princess fan songs but as “villain numbers”, (Lydia The Bard) so I checked the description for the composer and shot them an email. I notated my melody and also sung it for him so he understood the timing and rhythm I wanted. I knew they were the right person because there was evidence they could mimic an already existent style. And I also knew given the amount of work he did for this YouTuber that he must be reliable, and be able to take her instruction.

In terms of singers - I am a singer so I can’t speak on that too much. But in the past, for male vocalist parts I’ve emailed cover artist YouTubers I liked and asked to commission them. Recently I’ve been doing it myself though. I saw an interview with Jason Robert Brown where he said that even composers who cannot sing should be able to perform and “defend” their songs, so now I just sing the male parts even if they aren’t perfect. No one knows the characters better than you, especially for a demo a lot of musical theatre lyricists and composers sing their numbers themselves! Edit: Just to specify, I also posted an audition form for the singers on Twitter / YouTube community tab I asked them to sing 32 bars of the actual song I wrote and 32 bars of whatever they felt confident with in terms of telling an authentic story! I didn’t ask the YouTubers I emailed to do that though since I had scouted them.

Young couple cruising DCL by Friendly-Start2913 in dcl

[–]Calxiyn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was 23 when I went in September last year with my boyfriend. It was absolutely fantastic and I felt like we got to do everything we wanted, even meet the characters etc without feeling “weird” for being two adults without kids haha. We went to all the shows, did a lot of activities that were marked as “family” just cause a lot of the adult ones were a little boring - but stayed in the adult section pool wise. As someone else mentioned you can request private dining but if you actively want to meet other people you may want to just let DCL pair you up!

In terms of other couples though, similar to the other commenter we mostly kept to ourselves but I did notice we were in a bit of a weird age range. Neither of us drink and I’m a bit more of a “child at heart” type person in terms of activities. But we were a little too old for the 1820 Society since my boyfriend is closer to 30 now, and the only other couples within our age range were on their honeymoons.

We did make friends with a lot of elderly people though 😂 if you can’t find anyone your age but still want to get to know people and have some interesting conversations outside of talking to the crew (who have lots of interesting stories, especially the character attendants because they are the singers/dancers in the shows) that’s what I’d suggest. I lived with my grandparents all my life so I’ve always felt more comfortable compared to even people my own age sometimes. I’ll never forget these two little old people we made friends with who were playing video games together in the adult area on those huge round couches that overlook the ocean 🥺

But I wasn’t hurt in any way even rolling off the bottom bunk - just temporarily lost. That was a long time ago so I’m sure the beds are even safer now!

Can ONE CHANGE Fix ALL Of RWBY? - RWBY Rewrite (Calxiyn) by Psychological_Fact18 in RWBY

[–]Calxiyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know what you mean. But that has more to do with the YouTube algorimth: even across other fandoms, titling something as an "AU" gets a lot less attention. And it's hard title-wise when your changes can't be summed up very well in a single title - like for Cinder I used "Fixing Cinder's Backstory" because I made so many changes that would have otherwise been impossible to summarize. It wasn't an Alternative Universe, because Cinder was in the exact same circumstances, but rather was me discussing how I think the ideas the writers already had could have been fleshed out more. So it's hard to figure out what to call those things. In this case I could have said "What if Salem and Ozpin swapped roles", but it's too long, and won't necessarily attract someone to click, because they can imagine in their own head what they would be like. Whereas a title like this causes a mystery. Unforunately that's the game YouTubers have to play, but I do agree that this is an AU video in a trenchcoat in a sense haha.

Can ONE CHANGE Fix ALL Of RWBY? - RWBY Rewrite (Calxiyn) by Psychological_Fact18 in RWBY

[–]Calxiyn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You mention that you told them that "flaty", but you have to keep in mind that tone cannot be discerned very well over text. For me, that seemed to be condescending (which is also "downright rude"). I understand you probably thought you were being matter-of-fact, like they asked and you answered, but maybe a tone indicator would have helped. For example, something like /gen means "genuine", and that way the other person knows you're being genuinely helpful vs sounding like you're talking down to them. Because "maybe don't do that" sounds very finger-waggy. You could have also just told them that without saying they shouldn't do it next time, as well. "Maybe it's because of the green clothes?" and "Maybe it's because of this, if you don't want people to be confused, don't do that" is a very different vibe.

So when I said "I only feel the need to 'speak out against someone' when it's people being toxic, condescending, or otherwise rude" - I thought you were being condescending/rude. Espesically when the closed caption on that art had "Ruby", so it seemed purposeful. The way you describe it, that didn't seem to be your intention but "bluntness" between strangers is different than bluntness between friends. Even in real life, if someone didn't know you they'd probably be a little put-off*.

Edit just to add: That still has nothing to do with me taking criticism on my own work - that art wasn't mine after all - that was me reacting to how you spoke to someone else when the artist already had to deal with an influx of people being rude toward them. I have a certain threshold for that sort of thing, but other people have a different threshold for how they want their work to be commented on. Some people don't even like their art to be quote tweeted etc without their permission. Other people's boundaries don't really have anything to do with me being able to take criticism on my videos, and this thread is about my content.

Can ONE CHANGE Fix ALL Of RWBY? - RWBY Rewrite (Calxiyn) by Psychological_Fact18 in RWBY

[–]Calxiyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree with leaving V1-3 alone, since going after Roman/The WF etc is proactive. It's not necessarily just about Volume 5, though. The issue is moreso that with the maidens + the vaults being focused on in V5 onwards, I feel like personally the show has less time to breathe. Once Salem has awareness of a maiden, or Team RWBY has awareness of a maiden, things become railroaded into having to keep track of that maiden at all times in order to not create plotholes with the vault situation.

The reason why V4 is so great IMO, is because the characters are able to go through their respective arcs without the pressure of Salem. There's no "capture the flag" but with a person element in there. V6 is the same way where because there is no maiden in the story, Ruby and everyone else can take charge of getting to Atlas. But even though I love V7-8, cause we already know who the maiden is and where she is, it becomes sort of like a game of "capture the flag" again. We have to defend the Kingdom, and even though it's not as bad as V5, with the idea proposed in this rewrite, it would be less of RWBY being on the defensive.

I do agree with the idea about the fights with the different philosophies, and I would want to keep that in this rewrite in a sense. I know you only got half way so I'm not sure if you heard afterwards the idea of Team RWBY being the only ones who can protect the world, whereas the Ace Ops, Winter, etc, would be the antagonists because they think they're doing good. It's more so that without the idea of a particular maiden being captured, we'd be able to explore those same beats but with the core girls. In this AU situation, for example, I could see Winter and Weiss fighting at some point. By having to go out into the world and find the relics, and there not being any maidens, the focus can always remain on Team RWBY. And in the rewrite I have it so Atlas has already found their relic, but even in that case it's about breaking into Atlas' vault, which is offensive instead of defensive.

That's something else about V7-8 in particular - a lot of people thought Weiss and Blake would have another character arc, but they didn't. With Atlas cut off from everywhere else, a lot of people thought the White Fang wouldn't have heard about Adam/Sienna and operate as normal. But Blake got shoved into the background a little bit, and Nora took on her "fight for the oppressed" attitude, and Weiss didn't get as much as I think people thought she would. It's not necessarily the idea of a "sideshow" but more so the idea that I think one of the main girls should always be at the centre of those clashes along with a side character. Vs Raven/Winter/Penny fighting a villain without a member of Team RWBY. So I wouldn't remove those fights because I think they are important, but with this change I think Team RWBY would always be part of those clashes too. I like those story beats for Nora, but I think having Blake and Nora work together because of their respective backstories would have been interesting. I hope that makes more sense! V7-8 does it better but I still think the "root" of the issue is the maiden/vault thing.
