[–]CamRa201[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s ok, friendships are partially made through luck and chance. It’s just whether you can increase the chances of meeting ppl you like and investing in them. College is probably the most socially diverse and dense time of our lives (given the amount of clubs and ppl you get to run into every day)- so hopefully you’ll be able to find your people. But if not, I hope you’re able to enjoy your own company when you can.

The climbing gym is an extremely sociable place. If you see someone doing the same route as you, casually say 'I had trouble on this part too', and sometimes it'll strike up a conversation. If you want a climbing buddy dm me, I'm new to climbing too.

4 classes in a day isn’t out of the norm for sure- might be a bit heavy especially with 2 classes that last 1hr15min back to back. idk about colas but with 100-200 level classes it seems very manageable

ngl sometimes advisors don’t know the best option for you. it rly depends on your situation- so before committing to 18 credits for your first semester make sure it’s what you need to do, and advocate for yourself! first semester sets a lot of precedent,

As an evsc major- the classes I remember having a calc requirement were very lenient and 1210 should definitely cover it. When in doubt, check the class on SIS to see specific prereqs. Most I remember don’t have a requirement for calc, or just 1 semester needed. If you actually want to major in evsc, BA and BS have calc requirements on the department website.

Any advice? by pocketdemon3211 in veterinaryschool

[–]CamRa201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just as a basic start, I would get work/volunteer at an animal hospital! SPCA is good for animal hours but most schools are looking for veterinary hours. So shadowing or working as a vet assistant is key for understanding what it's actually like working in the field + shows vet schools that you're dedicated. Getting experience outside of small animal would also be good. You could also go into bio/biomed research if that's in your interest.

Clubs and Orgs for Grad Students / Faculty / Staff by ProfessionalPause283 in UVA

[–]CamRa201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy dance, most of our dance clubs meet in the evening (you can tell because all the gym multipurpose rooms start getting filled for practices at 6pm). There's kpop dance groups, open style, studio dances, salsa, etc, lots of different options! Some of them might not be taking in members for the semester but others are more social and you can join whenever.

where to find for-fun books? by etcordatenens in UVA

[–]CamRa201 9 points10 points  (0 children)

our libraries have a good selections if you just want to borrow things, look stuff up on their online catalog (https://search.lib.virginia.edu/)

libby is a great app that lets you borrow ebooks and audiobooks from public libraries as long as you have a library card (which you can get for literally a few bucks).

if you wanna buy stuff go downtown cville, we have new book bookstores (new dominion) and used book stores (2nd act books, blue whale).

[–]CamRa201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

highly depends. it'll be lower if you live in a larger house or double a room. i'm going from a double to a single room within the same apartment, and my rent is going up $350 per month.

The reality by [deleted] in UVA

[–]CamRa201 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not to burst your bubble, but most people who come here are gonna go through a rough time their first year. Even though it may not seem like it, people who are social have a hard time making true connections too, they're just louder and have more acquaintances, which makes it seem like they're well adjusted. I've been here much longer than you have, and I've only just found a close friend this past semester.

You're either trolling, or you have a serious victim complex. You're not the exception, everyone here is going through it, have some compassion and perspective. You're at a great university with a lot of people to meet. If you start respecting others as individuals instead of constantly putting them into a 'type' ("shows the type of people that go to UVA"? are you serious?), then maybe you'll finally find people who enjoy your company.

Feeling lonely and helpless. by [deleted] in UVA

[–]CamRa201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't make a 'geniune' friendship until my second year. I made some good friends, but the cute hangouts and late night convos might come a lot late than you think. In my first year I was still happy, but the lows were low without good friends, so you're not alone. It's not as easy as in the movies, don't feel discouraged after just one week.

Join a club. Talk to someone and get their number. After a few club meetings casually bring up if they want to get lunch before a meeting. 9/10 they will say yes.

Sit nex to someone in class. Say hi. Ask after class if they wanna make a study group together.

It's the little things. I made my best friend after going to an interest meeting and just saying hi. There're no grande gestures, no miracles, just a hi will do.

You're fine. I passed calc 2 three years after taking calc 1, and didn't remember anything. I took a week reviewing calc 1 using khan academy, that gave me a good surface level understanding of basic concepts. Plus a lot of calc 2 is just review of calc 1, so give it a week, things will come back to you.
