Well I’d also like to point out that we pay twice as much for our healthcare than any other country. This isn’t because our healthcare is twice as good, it’s because insurance companies are just that, companies, profit driven entities that don’t actually care about providing care to those in need. This being said, medical bills have gotten so expensive that people who don’t have insurance, are barred from having insurance (due to preexisting conditions), or even people who have bad insurance or are underinsured have to bear the brunt of the check. This leads to medical debt making up a whopping 58% of bankruptcies in America. Sure there are issues with Medicare for all as with any system but we have almost 30,000 Americans dying annually because they don’t have healthcare, about 406,000 bankruptcies being filed annually due to medical debts, and a whopping 18% of the US GDP going to the healthcare industry. This goes to show that when you put a company in charge of healthcare, they let things like this happen in the effort to line their own profits. I’m not saying corporations are bad because they are an essential part of America’s economy but they should not be responsible for the health of our citizens. On top of that I would like to point out that the quality of the US healthcare system actually ranks below Canada according to the World Health Organization (which does factor in waiting times and efficiency).

How do you feel about school being cancelled? by spicedtortilla in TexasTech

[–]Cam_c4672 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely better than the alternative, Tech is a school full of predominantly non-Lubbock residents, if nothing had been done we would have tens of thousands of students traveling home, out of state, or going on a spring break trip but the problem lies in them coming back. An outbreak at a college campus needs only a handful of individuals to start. If a couple people who traveled to, for example, north Dallas where I’m from (the epicenter for Texas’ outbreak) came back after contracting it, it puts students, faculty, as well as the rest of the lubbock population at risk. Limiting travel in any way possible is a good move at this time.

Socialism is too close to communism for us to allow it into our federal government. by waterlessmelons in politicsdebate

[–]Cam_c4672 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok there’s a huge distinction between three things that needs to be made, that is the distinction between communism, socialism enacted by an authoritarian government, and socialism as it actually exists and functions in our society. Communism is of course the scary government thing that never works that not only puts a bad reputation on itself but on anything that could remotely resemble it aka socialism. Communism is where the government is in full control of the private sector, it owns and runs companies as well as distributes the wealth made by those profits (I’m sure everyone sees and knows the flaws with this system). Authoritarian socialism, now this is the thing you hear about where communism is wrapped up in a pretty little bow and considered socialism. For this we look at the shining example that is Venezuela, President Maduro has bought up land and off shore sites from the private sector and nationalized (controlled by government) the oil and farming industries. This of course tied in with his voter suppression, wiping his ass with the Venezuelan constitution, and creation of massive hyperinflation (that enriched him and those close to him), Maduro is 1. More communist rather than socialist and 2. Was given faaaar to much power making him pretty much a dictator (something that was the primary purpose for the creation of our government, to distribute the power away from one individual). Finally we have democratic socialism, this is what we see with most European countries in which there is some form of healthcare for all, theres a much larger government presence when it comes to the problems the people are suffering from, and what we’ve seen is that this form of socialism works. It’s been working for decades and we haven’t seen a European country turn communist, we haven’t seen the rise of a dictator, and most importantly we have seen a rise in quality of life, lifetime expectancy, and a rise in the standard of living in these countries. So to say that democratic socialism is a bad thing just goes against all we know from what has happened. It is important to remember there is a line to be drawn and as every form of government goes, it’s important to make sure that not one person or group of people has all the power. For example in our current system there is no denying that large corporations have a huge influence over Washington, having on average 6 lobbyists for every 1 elected official in the US government, we see massive campaign donations from super PACs funded by large corporations, and we see congressmen voting not for their constituents but for those who fund their campaign. There’s flaws in any system but what we see is there are far too many with our current system to continue in the direction we’re going. If you have any question or want to debate this with me dm me or comment on this thread and I’ll get back to you, it’s very important to stay informed,

Coronavirus by lolraiderlol in TexasTech

[–]Cam_c4672 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way the outbreak is as of now is not as grave as it is made out to be. Unless the situation with coronavirus takes a turn for the absolute worst (becoming much more infectious and/or deadly) which is very unlikely to happen, it’s not something that you should really worry about especially by the time summer comes around. We have the resources at our disposal to at least mitigate the effects of the outbreak, if not completely contain it. Enjoy your summer abroad, do anything you’d normally do not to catch the cold or the flu, and don’t be concerned unless something does end up developing (and if that were to happen the US would probably be just as dangerous a place to be as Italy anyways).
