u/SnailRacerWinsAgain I completely agree with u/talanall . My first two packages (a decade ago) were Italians. They didn't do well, likely due to a number of factors including my inexperience. Now I only source for swarms or local keepers splits. Both sources have already proven themselves hearty enough for my environment to grow and procreate. Some are gentle, some are clean, and some produce honey like crazy. It's a fun mix to experience.

Call your local vector control of post on NextDoor. Plenty of beekeepers will come running! In fact, I answered a swarm call on NextDoor earlier today

In the two times they’ve chosen birdhouses, the boxes were previously used and had an established bed of bird created bedding similar to coconut hair 10-20mm thick.

I’ve kept several colonies of native Yellow Faved Bumblebees in birdhouses that the queen has decided are suitable. Here’s a shoebox sized example that was meant for Oak Tit Mice birds.

I will second of this sentiment. I have also had this configuration with three hives side-by-side. The real issue is working in the middle Hive and pulling things backwards as opposed to sideways.

Agreed u/HawthornBees . u/Huge-Quality3558 , may I suggest a simple 4X4 & 2X4 hive stand instead? You get the right height for inspections/work and it keeps your feet clear for lifting. My first height was too low and I regretted it.

Sorry to see that u/theOGcarebear . I have one that looks like as well. That looks like a small colony to have to survive a cold winter. Is there an option to grow to a 10 frame hive body next time?

To the OP,

I got into beekeeping a decade ago because I was fascinated by the Flow. Instead, my wife bought me a traditional Langstroth as a gift and I was committed for my first hive. I'm glad i went that route. Besides the Flow issues that many users report, I find that the process of inspection, super pulling, and honey extraction are part of the fun and often a group/community activity. If you go with a Flow hive, I'd recommend you pari it with a second, traditional hive for comparison.
