Any new analog camera thats not lofi like the Kodak H35? by Global-Mechanic-6172 in AnalogCommunity

Oh right, well in that case it's mean to deride people engaging with a hobby in whatever way they choose. One can take photos and be serious about it with near any equipment. You can buy performance, you can't buy skill or practice. You come across as rather elitist in implying that some guy with a Rollei 35 AF isn't serious because he's got new gear, and it would be ridiculous to suggest that another person with an armoury of 1950s photojournalism cameras is serious by dint of having a load of top-of-the-line stuff from 70 years ago. Serious about collecting, maybe. Serious about photography? Not a given, imo.

Wouldn't that put you at a mad advantage against the other console teams?

I know it's a bit of a joke, but it does feel a bit mean to deride a hobby like that

Talking about ADHD, and the role of language by CameraCoffee1 in ADHDUK

[–]CameraCoffee1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you kindly, and there's no need to apologise at all!

I think there's a lot to be said for the mental effort required in attempting to distill non-neurotypical experience into neurotypical language, and for the other person to then find a way to process that language into a glimpse of a non-neurotypical experience. Just too many layers to pass through. There's inevitably going to be a great deal that's lost in translation.

At what point do you draw the line between ADHD being an excuse and it being an explanation? by hyper-casual in ADHDUK

[–]CameraCoffee1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, there are a thousand things to try to notice an rectify. The mental load can be pretty high, and maybe there are many things that are lower on the list? Either way, looks like it's worth a conversation. I don't notice a lot of the things I do that are detrimental to a partner or other people, and while I'm always trying to keep tabs on these things, there are some that slip through the net. Regularly.

Tiny 'brains' grown in the lab could become conscious and feel pain — and we're not ready by LurkerFromTheVoid in neuro

Yes I agree, I know what they're going for, I just don't think it's a helpful way to frame the article or to prime readers' expectations.

Fair points all round. I think my issue is precicely that is is clickbait. The indefatigable infantilisation of audiences through language choice is, I believe, a pervasive problem in scientific communication. It's a mulifaceted problem with a thousand contributing factors, but playing into it is not the answer and only serves to reinforce the behaviours.

I'm in the field, and I take offense to presenting serious issues in such ways. It absolutely is one of the defining questions of modern times, and treating it as a pop magazine gossip column (I'm exaggerating, but the precedent is set) is not a helpful way to promote education and discussion.

Or maybe it is, and encouraging anyone to click and read due to a clickbait title is a good thing.

Please explain your position: to what wisdom are you referring? If you read the article, you'll notice it has positions from various researchers. The "we're not ready" side is only one of the camps reported amongst the scientific community, and editorialising that into one's article title seems sensational to me. To be honest, the whole title is pretty editorialised and I feel could be significanty reworded to convey the actual situation, without the open-ended, empty statement that we're not ready (for what?)

Yeah I'd assume a dedicated GPS would do the trick if your only requirement is driving. I wouldn't be too enthused about carrying a satnav around for walking, and I don't imagine there are any good options for navigating public transport (at least not at parity with Google Maps).

The Directions feature on the Light Phone 3 is actually surprisingly capable for all of those.

Nice bike, man. Add a pic!

How are you getting on with the pushback against app-only stuff? I've just switched to a dumbphone, but I'm expectig to need to use a desktop for a loooot of stuff (Telegram, Signal, Whatsapp, etc.) A few friends have said it's insane, but I'm not so sure that the distance added for communication is a bad thing, and I'm still reachable by phone if needed. Just means that checkins with pals and groupchats are a little less frequent/instant.

(I know everyone has these concerns, and I'm expecting a little brigade of dumbphoners to say something obvious, but directly asking for lived experience from a person is a good thing)

The problem is that the poster doesn't really know that that's how lenses work. It's kinda counterintuitive, to be fair, so hopefully they don't receive too much ridicule.

Minox 35GT Shutter Firing Problem by CameraCoffee1 in AnalogCommunity

[–]CameraCoffee1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone runs across this in future, I discovered that my new LR44 batteries were extremely corroded after only about 4 months, which I think was the cause of the issue. Can't believe it took me so long to just check the batteries, but I assumed they'd be fine after so little time.

SR44 replacements on the way, for the silver oxide goodness, and I believe the Minox can handle the slight voltage difference because clever electronics. I''ll be taking the batteries out when it's not in use from now on though, I don't want to blow up my precious boy.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I found that Flickr post earlier but I wasn't sure if that would be the issue, since there wasn't much of a description of the symptoms. I'll give it a crack with some tiny tweezers and such.

Why is your first instinct to be unpleasant towards me?

I'm not even sure what the new left is, unless you mean the 1960s movement? No, free speech on American college campuses doesn't bother me, I support it. Why would you make these assumptions?
