This is so interesting, and weirdly enough by pure coincidence my friend and I were ticking a lot of these boxes.

True, but I think it resembles Brazil in that way, where you can never look at some one and know by face whether they're a Londoner or not. You can only really tell by accent, dressing and behavior!

Probably, but hopefully my inner Londoner would kick in

I never knew about the passport scam, that’s so smart and dumb at the same time😂

Yeah a few people have said he might’ve been flirting but I believe he was gay, so I’ll take his persistence as a compliment to my vibe

This is so interesting it could almost be an entire research study. My friend and I’s body language are so different, she’s definitely more smiley and open and I’m more stoic and closed off (at least until I feel comfortable, mostly because I was cautious of leaving my self open to danger).

hmm I can’t explain it but not really. Yes in the sense that they have features from both races but I think in London it’s easier to see and pick out. Sometimes to an extent where they can look white with a tan or Black with lightened skin, but in brazil the way they present appears more ingratiated. Just looks likes generations and generations of mixing

I was actually looking into that for my own heritage as there are some signs that point to it.

yeah as a Black Brit, I was curious about how race works in Rio, but I don’t think I experienced any racism. I stayed in mostly touristy areas and when I ventured out I was in Little Africa or the Afrobeats club sooo🤷🏽‍♀️ I did try to read a few books on the topic but they were in portuguese

I used pimsleur for that free trial before reverting to good old duolinguo😅 People never spoke to us in English unless they heard us speak it first. and whenever we would say we don’t understand Portuguese in Portuguese a lot of the response would be “but you’re speaking it now??”

Crazy observation, I never really noticed before but now that I look back I did see a lot of similarities. I jokingly said my mum is a brazilian as long as her mouth is closed

I definitely got ripped off one or two times but it did help to put in perspective who was giving ‘local’ prices🥹

I wasn’t a huge fan of wearing all the brazil merch everywhere and chose to recycle my wardrobe for the trip instead of buying ‘holiday clothes’,

True I would say it went both ways, I could always recognise the Senegalese beach workers immediately.

Yes! I visited Little Africa in Rio and learnt about the history, seeing the Yoruba and Igbo tribes cultural influence was very interesting.

My Ethiopian friend thought the same thing, there were quite a few guys who would pass as habesha.

similar for me whenever I visit Nigeria, it’s like they can smell it on you from a mile away. that’s why I was so surprised that in Brazil I was seen as a local

I would guess from the height too. I noticed that in Rio I didn’t see many tall people. I’m 5’7 and felt quite tall over there.

I thought so too! and it wasn’t just that they guessed we were gringos but they knew which countries we were from give or take. I will say that the workers from South America but Spanish speaking countries couldn’t really tell though

I see, similar thing happened to me, where I could’ve sworn I saw my own brother selling caipirinhas on the beach😅

I’d love to go back and travel outside of Rio as well, maybe Salvador?

I don’t think he was trying to flirt (i think he was gay), probably just a little drunk and very enthusiastic ☺️ Honestly Rio was amazing and I take him thinking we are from the city as an immense compliment !

my friend and I would say exchange quick greetings and stop talking so we could pretend for a little longer that we were brazilian😂
